Abstract
NEW MATERIAL:Penicillin derivatives or their no-toxicity salts of formula I (R is H, OH).
EXAMPLE: D(-)-α-(Chalcone-4'-carbonylamino)benzylpenicillin sodium salt.
USE: Antibacterial agents, effective against gram-positive and -negative bacteria, especially Proteus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa bacteria.
PREPARATION: The reaction between a compound of formula II and a compound of formula III in an adequate solvent, or between a compound of formula IV and a compound of formula V affords a compound of formula I. The carboxyl group in the 3 position of compounds of formula II and IV may be either free or in the form of water-soluble salt or protected. Compounds of formula III and V may be converted to their reactive derivatives such as their acid halide or azide. When a free acid is employed, the use of a proper condensation agent is preferred.
