Abstract

PURPOSE:To make it possible to accomplish the accurate measurement by forming dual annular curtains to make a laser beam pass therethrough and by removing water and vapor from the optical path between a sensor and a test piece (e.g., steel plate) and from the surface of the test piece. CONSTITUTION:A laser is used to measure the moving speed of a steel plate in a non-contact manner. For this purpose, dual annular air curtains 7 and 25 are formed so that the laser beam 4 from a sensor 3 and the resultant reflected light 5 may pass through the inner air curtain 7. Purge air 7 is blown onto a test piece 6 from the nozzle 1 thus constructed thereby to removed water 8 and vapor 9. An optical path 17 is supplied through an air reservoir 22 with a proper quantity of auxiliary air 18 so that the purging efficiency may be prevented from being deteriorated due to the turbulence established. The spurting speed of the inner air curtain 7 is made larger than that of the outer air curtain 25 so that the vapor may be prevented from being mixed with the purge air 7.
