Abstract

PURPOSE: To provide the subject process comprising combining a cored wire of low carbon, low silicon and low manganese with a wire having a specific basicity, and defining a carbon equivalent of a weld metal, thereby to obtain a high-tensile weld metal in submerged arc welding.
CONSTITUTION: In submerged arc welding of a 3.5% nickel steel, a cored wire consisting of c≤0.03%, Si≤0.1%, Mn; 0.1 to 0.5%, Ni; 2.5 to 5.5%, Mo≤1%, Ti≤0.5%, B; 0.02W0.1%, CaF2; 5W25%, and the residual part of iron an a flux containing 10 to 30% of SiO2 and having a basicity of 1.5 to 3, and welded so that the carbon equivalent of the weld metal becomes 0.15 to 0.25%. By this procedure the nickel content of the weld metal becomes substantially equal to that of the mother material, and hence the oxygen content of the weld metal becomes low. Since by the addition of suitable quantities of Ni, Mo, Ti and B, the strength of the steel is controlled, sufficient tenacity and strength at low temperatures of the weld metal can be obrained.
