Abstract
NEW MATERIAL:A compound of formula I: (R is H or OH) and its non-toxic salt.
EXAMPLE: D(-)-α-(chalcone-4-carbonylamino) benzylpenicillin potassium salt.
USE: Antibacterials effective against Gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria (particularly proteus and bacillus pyocyaneus).
PROCESS: A compound of formula II or its salt is reacted with a compound of formula III or its reactive derivative in a suitable solvent at about -50W50°C, preferably -20°C to room temperature to give a compound of formula I or its salt. A suitable condensing agent is preferably added when a compound of formula III is directly used. Alternatively, a compound of formula IV or its salt is reacted with a compound of formula V or its reactive derivative to form the compound of formula I or its salt.
