Abstract

PURPOSE:To form a desired hardness distribution on the surface of a steel material by selectively varying the scanning speed and power density of laser beams when the material is hardened with the beams. CONSTITUTION:The course of laser beams 2 radiated from laser oscillator 1 is changed by 90 deg. in a different direction with first reflex mirror 3 and second reflex mirror 4. Laser beams 2'' are then condensed by condenser lens 5 and radiated to the surface of steel material W to be treated. At this time, mirror 4 and condenser 5 are held in one united body so that the surface of material W is scanned by moving material W back and forth, and forward at a predetermined speed. A desired hardness distribution is formed on the surface of material W by regulating the radiation of laser beams according to the necessary hardness. In order to regulate the radiation, the power density and/or the scanning speed of laser beams are varied, and the power density variation is regulated by varying the output of beams from oscillator 1 and the focusing positionof beams due to condenser lens 5.
