Abstract

PURPOSE: To improve effect of removing BOD from waste water, by means of an apparatus in which reaction tank units, each having fermentative powder placed on a porous plate, are arranged in a plurality of stages with a space communicated to the open air being interposed therebetween, and water is sprinkled from the above while stirring up the surface of said fermentative powder.
CONSTITUTION: Reaction tank units 4, each having a porous plate 2 sucg as wire net at its lower end and fermentative powder 3 such as sawdust placed on said porous plate 2, are arranged in a plurality of stages in a treatment tank 1, with a space communicated with the open air through window 14 being interposed therebetween. Waste water is drawn from waste water tank 8 by means of pump 9 and sprinkled into treatment tank 1 from supply pipe 10, while turning agitator rod 5 disposed centrally of the tank 1 and stirring up the surfaces 6 of fermentative powder 3 in each reaction tank unit 4 with its agitating blades 7. As a result, fermentative powder 3 thus humidified causes fermentation, and in doing so, self-digestion of aerobic bacteria on the surfaces of fermentative powder 3 is effected due to temperature rise caused by the heat of fermentation. With such an arrangement, it is possible to efficiently remove BOD without producing superfluous sludge, if the system is operated continuously for a long time.
