Abstract

Combined use is made of the purifying effect caused by mixing, agitating and aerating fresh and recycled, partly purified sludge and the purifying effect of microorganisms supported on hollow materials, suitably aerated and regularly watered with the effluents to betreated. The raw sewage is introduced into a rotating drum through a hollow shaft and is stirred by internal blades. Air is blown by a fan through another hollow shaft. A filtering mass, consisting of a sieve with spirally-wound tubes, forms the lateral surface of the drum; this mas has numerous interstitial cavities which encourage the formation of a viscous purifying film which contains the bacteria. These receive the oxygen from aht eir blown in during the rotation of the structure partly immersed in a tank. The residue left in the drum assures the necessary recycling for activating the fresh sludge entering the drum. The water that is not recycled is directed to a settlement tank. Slude accumulates in the lower portion of the settlement tank while the clear, purified water pours ver the upper part into a gutter whence it is evacuated. Excess sludge can be removed periodically to drying beds.
