Abstract

: The present invention relates to a chair with a seat which is supported on an upright tube located essentially below its centre point, and with a backrest which is connected to the seat by means of a support arm pivotable relative to the seat about a horizontal axis located below the seat in front of the upright tube, the support arm having a fork which joins its lower end and extends on both sides of the upright tube towards said axis, and a compression spring counteracting the tilting motion of the backrest so as to bias it back into a substantially vertical position, in which chair said fork of the support arm has parallel prongs that are angle-shaped, each prong forming two arms one of which extends in a generally downwards direction from the horizontal pivot axis so as to support, at its point of intersection with the other arm, the end of an axis parallel to the horizontal pivot axis of the fork and serving as a first hinge point of the compression spring whose other hinge point is located near the front edge of the seat, said axis being at such a distance below the pivot axis that the compression spring is substantially at right angles to the downwardly extending arm of each prong of the fork.
