Abstract

PURPOSE: To provide a light-weight superhard golden sintered alloy for decoration by sintering TaC and NbC in a specified ratio with a Fe group metal as a binder.
CONSTITUTION: Part of fine golden TaC is replaced with NbC. At this time, the ratio of Nb/Ta is regulated to 0.15:0.85W0.50:0.50. Below 10 wt% of the total amt. of Ta and Nb may be replaced with carbides of Ti, Zr, Hf, V, Cr, Mo and W. Below 15 atomic % of C of the carbides may be replaced with N to form hard nitrides. The replacement in the above ranges does not lighten the gold color of TaC. A hard phase consisting of the above carbides and nitrides is based on a B1- type solid soln. and sintered with 3W20 wt% of a Fe group metal such as Fe, Co or Ni as a binder to give a light-weight hard fine golden sintered alloy suitable for use as a watchcase and a decoration.
