Abstract

PURPOSE:To realize a light-modulation function and laser oscillations by changing the polarization state of a substance by controlling the voltage of an electrode, by arranging the substance, available for Kerr effect, with a sulfo group between facing electrodes. CONSTITUTION:Photo element U, having electrodes 2, is filled with substance 3 available for Kerr effect. Light L2 inputted by way of polarizer 5 is modulated because the polarization state of photo element U varies with a voltage applied between electrodes 2. When coloring matter is mixed into substance 3, proper reflectors are arranged at the opposite sides to photo element U of polarizer 5 and to photo element U of analyzer 6 and substance 3 is irradiated with external excitation light to obtain laser oscillations, which can be controlled by a voltage applied between electrodes.
