Abstract
PURPOSE:Glass preform is made smooth and clean on the surface, then spun under specific conditions to produce optical fibers with reduced fluctuation in fiber diameter and high mechanical strength. CONSTITUTION:A glass preform that has prescribed distribution of refractive index in the radial direction is dipped in a solution of hydrofluoric acid or a mixture thereof with phosphoric and sulfuric acids and others to make the surface smooth and clean. Then, the one end of preform is molten by heating and spun by applying an tension, into fibers, which are immediately coated with a primary coat to give optical fibers with reduced fluctuation in fiber diameter. At this time, the temperature and heating zone and spinning tension are controlled so that the length of molten part on the one end of the preform is kept shorter than the diameter of the preform, thus increasing the mechanical strength of optical fiber.
