Abstract

CONSTITUTION: Dimethylformamide is obtained by reacting a mixture of monomethylamine, dimethylamine, and trimethylamine with CO, using metalic Fe or a Fe compound as a catalyst. The above-mentioned mixture of methylamines can be formed by removing the unreacted substances and by-products from the reaction mixture of methyl alcohol and ammonia. It is assumed that the methyl group of the trimethylamine is transfered to the monomethylamine.
