Abstract

PURPOSE: To make it possible to produce an image having excellent gradation by forming a latent image of an optical attenuation proportional to exposure.
CONSTITUTION: A photosensitive element 5 for zerography has its conductive substrate 51 overlaid by photosensitive layers 52 and 53. The layer 52 has a continuing internal polarization, whereas the layer 53 has a different optical attenuating curve from the layer 52 and has transparency. And, a primary charging operation is accomplished while uniformly irradiating with the light to which the layer 53 exhibits no optical sensitivity. Then, a secondary cahrging operation is accomplished in the dark such that the current of the secondary operation is lower than that of the primary operation. If, under this condition, the image exposure is performed, an electrostatic latent image is produced by the optical attenuation substantially proportional to the exposure.
