Abstract

PURPOSE: To enhance the visibility of the liquid crystal color display device by interposing a liquid crystal material layer which exhibits multichromaticity in visible light region and is negative in dielectric anisotropy between vertical and diagonal orientation treatment substrates.

CONSTITUTION: An electrode substate 1 having undergone vertical orientation treatment and an electrode substrate 2 having undergone diagonal orientation treatment at 45 to 85° to the substrate face and in a fixed direction are sealed at their outside circumference by an eposy resin sealing part 5 to constitute the cell. Next, a liquid crystal material layer 3 which is added and compounded with dichromatic dyes and is negative in dielectric anisotropy is filled in the cell. Thereafter, a polarizing plate 4 is disposed on the outside of the substrate 2 so as to align to the diagonal orientation bearing of the liquid crystal compound and further a diffusion plate 6 is disposed on the outside thereof. This liquid crystal display device is colorless when no voltage is applied and shows the color of the dichromatic dyes selectively in the voltage applied regions when applied with voltage, thus enabling the required color display to be obtained with good color contrast without uneven colors.
