Abstract

PURPOSE: To scarf the surface flaw in a short time, independently of the kind of steel material, by causing the induced current for selectively heating and melting the portion of surface flaw of the steel material, and by blowing thus formed molten slag with the injected oxygen.
CONSTITUTION: First of all, the portion of surface flaw 8 of the steel material 4 is placed just under the induction heating coil 5 of a square type. Next, the apparent power is supplied to the coil 5, hereby, the induced current flows in different directions through the portion of surface flaw 8 of the steel material 4; the density of the induced current flowing through this portion becomes higher as compared with other portions of skin layer; as a result, the surface flaw 8 is heated and is perfectly molten. By blowing this molten slag by the oxygen supplied from the oxygen blowing nozzle 6, the surface flaw 8 of the steel material 4 can be removed in a short time, besides, this scarfing method can be applied to the steel material independently of its kind, even for the round billet, similarly to above.
