Abstract

PURPOSE: To improve the resolution of an initial image without any tedious operation by storing the charges in an insulated layer of a recording element surface until an equibrium is attained and by accomplish the latent image formation and development under that condition.
CONSTITUTION: A recording element 1, which is consecutively laminated with a photoconductive layer 12 and an insulated layer 13 on a conductive substrate 11, is charged repeatedly several times under a bright condition by means of a corona charger 2 prior to the latent image formation, until the storage of the charges in the layer 13 reaches its equibrium, to establish a constant charge density. Then, the charging operation for the latent image formation is accomplished in the dark by means of the charger 2. If the image exposure is subsequently accomplished, the charge distribution between the layers 13 and 12 is uniform irrespective of the exposed and non-exposed portions, but the charges reaching the equibrium due to the charges under a bright condition exist in the surface of the exposed portion. As a result, the development is accomplished by applying a bias potential in a quantity corresponding to the potential of the charges in the surface of the exposed portion.
