Abstract

PURPOSE: To liquefy a solid carbonaceous substance in a higher yield than that in high-pressure hydrogenolysis and to utilize hydrogen sulfide effectively, by bringing the substance into contact with a gas mixture of hydrogen and hydrogen sulfide.
CONSTITUTION: A solid carbonaceous substance is hydrogenated and liquefied by the use of a gas mixture of hydrogen and hydrogen sulfide at a volume ratio of 1: 1/100W1. The substance is preferably pulverized. The hydrogenation is carried out at lower temperature and pressure than the conventional method, e.g. at 250W 500°C, preferably 400W500°C and atmospheric pressureW300 atm, preferably 50W300 atm. The method provides improved hydrogenolysis ability even in he absence of a catalyst.
