Abstract

PURPOSE: To prevent a lowering of car exhaust gas cleaning efficiency and deterioration in adherence of a film of activated alumina powder by forming an intermediate layer consisting of refractory particles on the surface of a monolithic substrate such as cordierite and further forming the alumina film.
CONSTITUTION: A monolithic carrier such as cordierite or mullite is dipped in a mixed sol soln. and dried at 100°C to form intermediate layer 2 consisting of refractory particles on the surface of substrate 1. The sol soln. may be a mixt. of alumina sol, silica sol, Al(NO3)3 and water. The carrier is then dipped in a slurry of activated alumina, cured in satd. steam of 100°C, dired at 100°C, and calcined at 350°C for 1 hr to form activated alumina film 3.
