Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain the catalyst composition with high activity for use in exhaust gas purification or the like having a porous layer containing a noble metal by a method wherein carbon containing the noble metal and a slurry containing a metal oxide are adhered to a carrier and said carbon is removed by firing.
CONSTITUTION: Carbon impregnated with a noble metal or a water insol. noble metal compound and a slurry containing a refractory metal oxide are adhered onto an inorg. refractory carrier by immersion or the like. The impregnated carrier is fired at about 400W800°C to remove carbon by combustion. By this method, a catalytically active noble metal component is remained in a surface layer part of the carrier. As the result, the catalyst composition having a rough surface and a layer of porous refractory metal oxide containing the noble metal in the surface layer part thereof is obtained. This catalyst composition can attain good purifying reaction ratio in a small noble metal content.
