Abstract

PURPOSE: The reaction between pyroglutamic acid and an amine is effected using pivaloyl chloride as a condensation agent to produce title compound useful as a starting material for 2-anilinomethylpyrrolidine as an assymmetric reduction agent in low costs and high yield.
CONSTITUTION: The reaction between D-, L- or DL-pyroglutamic acid and an amine of RNH2 (R is alkyl, substituted alkyl or aryl) is effected to produce a pyroglutamic acid derivative of the formula wherein pivaloyl chloride is used as a condensation reagent and a solvent as acetone or N,N-dimethylformamide is used and the reaction temperature is 5- -20°C. The use of a base as tertiary amine, e.g., triethylamine or N-methylmorpholine accelerates the reaction.
