Abstract

PURPOSE: To elongate the fatigue life of a member by winding an electrode element for local electropolishing, round the notched bottom part of the member, obtd. by enclosing a wire electrode with a water absorbing and insulating substance and covering glass fibers, and then carrying out electropolishing to selectively remove the surface layer of the notched bottom part.
CONSTITUTION: A flixeble wire electrode with corrosion resistance, e.g. a copper wire is enclosed with water absorbing and insulating asbestos, etc. and covered with water permeable and insulating glass fibers, etc. to form an electrode element for local electropolishing. Element 4 is closely wound round the notched bottom part such as the screwed bottom part of bolt 5 and connected to the cathode of DC power source 6 through lead 7. bolt 5 is connected to the anode of source 6. Electrolytic soln. 9 is injected into element 4, and a current is supplied to electropolish the screwed bottom part alone of bolt 5 in contact with element 4, thereby removing the fatigued and damage surface layer of the bottom part. Thus the fatigue life of the member can be elongated sufficiently.
