Abstract

PURPOSE: An olefin polymer is emulsified using a specific organic solvent and jetted from orifices combined in series to produce microfibers having good entangling, fiber bonding, water-retention, and dispersing-in-water properties.
CONSTITUTION: A polymer solution A prepared by dissolving an olefin polymer in an organic solvent containing more than 2% of a component boiling at from-10 to + 45°C and more than 1% of saturated or unsaturated cyclic hydrocarbons is mixed with a polar-solvent solution B containing solutes being incompatible with solution A and soluble in the polar solvent to form an emulsion. The emulsion is extruded through paths consisting of a plurality of orifices combined in series into the low-pressure zone. The resulting microfibers are increased in specific surface area, and hydrophilic properties and improved in dispersity in water, thus giving sheets with increased strength and opacity and light scattering coefficient.
