Abstract

PURPOSE: Fibers formed from a mixture consisting of a polyamide, polystyrene and polyethylene glycol are treated with a solvent to remove polyestyrene and polyethylene glycol, thereby producing extremely fine polyamide fibers with a thickness of less than 0.1 denier.
CONSTITUTION: A mixture consisting of (A) polyamide, (B) polystyrene and (C) polyethylene glycol where the weight ratio of A/B is 40W60/60W40, C/A+B is 0.01W0.06 is melt spun and drawn to form mixed fibers of 1W10 denier. Then components B and C are removed from the mixed fibers by dissolving them. The resulting fibers are less than 0.1 denier in thickness and most of them range from 0.005 to 0.1 denier in thickness and from 20 to 100 mm in length. The extremely fine fibers are used alone or in the combination of other fibers to form base cloths for artificial leather.
