Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain the title compound, an intermediate for hypotensives and diuretics, without pollution, by reacting an aqueous alkali extract of p-thiocresol, obtained from a p-toluene-sulfonyl halide, phosphorus, K1, and water without isolation, with β-propiolactone.
CONSTITUTION: A p-toluene sulfonyl halide is reacted with potassium iodide and water to give p-thiocresol, which is, without isolation, extracted with an aqueous alkali directly. The resulting extract is reacted with β-propiolactone in an enclosed system to form p-tolylmercaptopropionic acid. A non-aqueous organic solvent, e.g. benzene or toluene, is advantageously used as a reaction solvent.
EFFECT: Bad smell pollution can be prevented without isolating p-thiocresol, and high yields reduce the production costs. The number of steps can be reduced.
