Abstract

(57)【要約】 【目的】 利用者にも応用プログラムにも意識させない
で自動的に、ファイルをディスクの間に再分布させるこ
との可能なファイル・システム。 【構成】 多数の異種のディスク記憶装置を有する一つ
のコンピュータ・システムで、各種のディスクに格納さ
れている多数のファイル登録簿が、ファイル名を対応す
るタグ値に翻訳し、また各ディスクごとの一個のファイ
ル記述子テーブルには、該ディスクに記憶された各ファ
イルに対するファイル記述子見出しが記載されている。
更にシステム唯一のタグ登録簿があり、システム内に記
憶された各ファイルごとに各一個のタグ見出しが記載さ
れている。ファイルを見付けるには、タグ値をディスク
へのポインタ及びファイル記述子見出しへのポインタに
翻訳する。またファイル間の移動はあらゆるファイル登
録簿見出しを探索更新すること無しに可能である。

Description

【発明の詳細な説明】
【０００１】
【産業上の利用分野】本発明は、一般的には多数の記憶
装置を有するコンピュータ・システムにおけるデータ記
憶管理に関連し、特に、コンピュータ・システムの利用
者に意識されることなく<transparent> 、ファイルをそ
のコンピュータ・システムの記憶諸装置の間に再分布さ
せることのできるファイル登録簿<file directory>シス
テムと登録方法とに関連する。
【０００２】
【従来の技術】大規模な商用コンピュータ・システム
（時にデータ・センターと呼ばれる）は、通常多種類の
データ記憶装置を有している。その種のデータ記憶装置
には、固体ディスク(RAMディスク) 、安価で低速の磁気
ディスク、高価で高速の磁気ディスク、ストライプ型デ
ィスク<striped disk>、シャドウ型ディスク<shadowed
disk> 、光ディスク、テープ駆動装置、その他が含まれ
る。多数ディスクを有するコンピュータ・システムでフ
ァイルが作成される際には、そのコンピュータのファイ
ル・システムは、そのファイルを記憶すべき一つのディ
スクを選択する。
【０００３】
【発明が解決しようとする課題】在来技術のシステムに
おいては、ファイルが作成されファイル・システムの一
つのディスク上に記憶されてしまうと、そのファイルは
削除されるまで決してそのディスクから離れることは無
い。換言すれば、ファイルは装置依存型<device-depend
ent>である。このためファイル・システムのディスクの
使用効率は低い。例えば、あるディスクは満杯なのに他
のディスクはがら空きの状態が生じる。そこでシステム
の運営者<administrator> は、明確かつ破壊的な<expli
cit and disruptive> 処置をとってファイルをシステム
のディスクの間に再分布せねばならない。こうするには
多分、ファイルの複写（および再命名）、またはファイ
ル・システムの再初期化を要することとなろう。
【０００４】在来のファイル・システムに付随する別の
問題の例としては、ディスク相互間で使用頻度が極端に
異なることがある。これが起こるのは、最も頻繁に使わ
れるファイルが一個または少数個のファイルに収容さ
れ、反面残りのディスクには古い使用頻度の低いファイ
ルが入っている場合である。ここでもシステム運営者
は、明確かつ破壊的な処理によりファイルをディスク間
に再分布させねばならない。
【０００５】現行のＵＮＩＸTMファイル・システムは、
単一ボリュームか、時には単一ボリュームの単なる一部
しか管理<span>または支援することしかできない。一個
のボリュームは物理的に一個またはそれ以上のディスク
であってよいが、このファイル・システムは、一つの多
ディスク・ボリュームを単一の大容量ディスクとして扱
う。このため、ＵＮＩＸファイル・システムは技術的に
はただ一個のボリュームを管理しているに過ぎず、従っ
て、ＵＮＩＸファイル・システムにおけるディスク記憶
の使い方は、多数ディスクを管理しファイルを装置依存
方式で収容している一般のファイル・システムと比べ
て、それ以下ではないにせよせいぜい同程度の不十分な
性能しか持たないことを意味する。
【０００６】
【課題を解決するための手段】本発明は、これらの問題
を解決するため、ファイル・システムが、容易にかつ見
えない形で<easily,transparently>（すなわち、利用者
も応用プログラムもファイル移動を意識しない形で）そ
して自動的に<and automatically> ファイルをディスク
の間に再分布させることを可能にするものである。数個
のファイル間でファイルを見えない形で移動するため
に、本発明によるファイル・システムは、ファイルを装
置とは独立な方式<device-independent manner> で収容
する。
【０００７】本発明は、これを概略の形で述べれば、一
個の中央処理ユニットとファイル記憶のための多数の異
種データ記憶装置を有するコンピュータ・システムにお
いて、ファイルを選択的に再分布するための方法とファ
イル・システムに属するものであって：多数のファイル
登録簿を含み、それらは上記多数のデータ記憶装置の各
所に記憶されてそれぞれ一組のファイル登録簿見出し<f
ile derectory entries>を収容し、ファイル登録簿見出
しはファイル名および対応するタグ値<tag value> を明
示し；そこでは単一のファイルに対応する多様な<multi
ple>ファイル名が上記ファイル登録簿の多数の上に記憶
でき；上記多数のデータ記憶装置のそれぞれは独立のフ
ァイル記述子テーブル<filedescriptor table> を有
し、これら各テーブルには、そのデータ記憶装置に記憶
された各ファイルごとに一個のファイル記述子見出し<f
ile descriptor entry>が記載され；システム全体に唯
一のタグ登録簿<tag directory> が存在して、それが上
記多数のデータ記憶装置のうち選ばれた一個の上に記憶
され、その中には定義した一組のタグ値に対するタグ見
出しが記載され、そこでは、上記多数のデータ記憶装置
に記憶されたあらゆるファイルが、上記タグ見出しのう
ち特定の一個により表示され、上記各タグ見出しは、上
記多数のデータ記憶装置のうち上記タグ見出しに対応す
るファイルを収容する特定の装置を明示し；更に、ファ
イル移動手段<file moving means> が存在し、それは上
記中央処理ユニットにより動作可能であって、指定され
たファイルを上記多数のデータ記憶装置のうち第一から
第二へ移動することを目的とし、この移動手段には、上
記指定されたファイルを上記多数のデータ記憶装置のう
ち上記第二の装置へ複写する手段、上記多数のデータ記
憶装置のうち上記第二の装置上のファイル記述子テーブ
ル上に、上記複写したファイルのためのファイル記述子
見出しを生成する手段、および、上記指定されたファイ
ルに対応する上記タグ登録簿におけるタグ見出しを変更
して上記タグ見出しが上記多数のデータ記憶装置のうち
上記第二の装置を明示するようにする手段を含み；この
ようにして、対応するすべてのファイル登録簿見出しを
探索・更新しないでも、ファイルを、上記多数のデータ
記憶装置のうち第一の装置から第二の装置へ移動するこ
とが可能である。
【０００８】望ましい一実施例により、多数の異種ディ
スク記憶装置を有するコンピュータのためのファイル・
システムが実現できる。このファイル・システムは、各
種のディスクに記憶された多数のファイル登録簿を含
む。各ファイル登録簿は、ファイル名を対応するタグ値
に翻訳するために用いられる。各ディスクごとに、その
ディスク上に記憶されたあらゆるファイルのためのファ
イル記述子見出しを記載した一個のファイル記述子テー
ブルが存在する。システム唯一のタグ登録簿があって、
システム内に記憶されたあらゆるファイルに対し各一個
のタグ見出しを記載している。
【０００９】本ファイル・システムでは、ある一つのフ
ァイルを見出すにあたり、一個のタグ登録簿を用いて、
一個のタグ値を、そのファイルの記憶されたディスクへ
のポインタ、およびそのファイルのファイル記述子見出
しへのポインタに翻訳する。あるファイルを第一から第
二のディスクへ移動するには、そのファイルを第二のデ
ィスクに複写し、この複写ファイルに対する新ファイル
記述子見出しを第二のディスク上のファイル記述子テー
ブル内に生成し、第一ディスク上のファイルの複写およ
びそのファイル記述子見出しを削除し<de-allocate> 、
そして、このファイル対応のタグ見出しを更新して、第
二のディスクおよびこのファイルの新ファイル記述子見
出しを指示する<point> ようにする。こうして、第一か
ら第二ディスクへのファイルの移動は、対応するすべて
の登録簿を探索し更新すること無く実現できる。
【００１０】望ましい一実施例では、ファイル・システ
ムに一つのルーチンを含み、これによりディスクの使用
状況<loading> と不使用ディスクの容量を監視する。こ
のルーチンは、ディスク使用の不均衡発生を検出し、自
動的にファイルをディスク間で移動してディスク使用の
均衡を改善する。
【００１１】本発明に関する上記以外の目的と特徴と
は、望ましい実施例を用いた以下の詳細説明および請求
項と、添付の６つの図面を組み合わせることにより、一
層容易に表現される。

【実施例】図１を参照すると、そこに示すコンピュータ
・システム100 には、中央処理ユニット102 があってシ
ステム・バス104 により二次記憶106(磁気ディスク記憶
装置108-112 を含む）、一次記憶120 （高速ランダム・
アクセス記憶）、仮想記憶管理部<virtual memory mana
ger>124 、および一個またはそれ以上の利用者インタフ
ェイス126 と相互接続されている。一次記憶120 には、
現時点で実行中の応用プログラム130 、およびオペレー
ティング・システム・ソフトウェアとして、本コンピュ
ータのファイル・システム140(時にファイル管理者<fil
e manager>プログラムと呼ぶ) などが記憶されている。
【００１３】データ構造<data structure>150 は、ディ
スク記憶に関連して、ファイル・システム140 により維
持されるが、その中には、多数のファイル登録簿テーブ
ル152 、ファイル記述子テーブル154(論理的ディスクボ
リュームごとに一個) 、および一個のタグ登録簿156 を
含み、このタグ登録簿が本発明の導入した新データ構造
である。データ構造150 は二次記憶106 に記憶される。
特に、このシステムには、ほぼ無制限の数のファイル登
録簿152 が収容でき、それらは二次記憶の各ディスクに
わたり概ねランダムに記憶される。ファイル登録簿152
は、ディスク・ファイルを群分けする<grouping sets>
目的でこのシステムの利用者により適宜生成される。利
用者たちが既存ファイルにアクセスするには、指定した
ファイル登録簿152 の中のファイル名を参照する。この
利用者の要求は、ファイル・システム140 に送られ、こ
の140 は指定されたファイルが二次記憶106 の何処に存
在するかを決定し、次いでそのファイルを開放するか、
または他の指定されたタスク、例えばそのファイルの複
写、印刷、削除などを実行する。
【００１４】後述のように、各ディスク108-112 は、自
己の記憶する各ファイルの見出しを記載した一個のファ
イル記述子テーブル154 を有している。最後に、このシ
ステムには唯一のタグ登録簿156 があり、通常ある一個
のディスクに記憶されているが、ある望ましい実施例で
は、このタグ登録簿に「第二の」部分があって、これを
切り離し他の場所に記憶できるようにしている。
【００１５】本ファイル・システム140 は、通常のファ
イル・システムのタスク、例えば、ファイルへのディス
ク空間の割り当て、既存ファイルの開放と閉鎖、その他
を行なうための一組の変形ルーチン<modified routine>
を含んでいる。更に、本発明に基づくファイル・システ
ム140 は、ファイル移動プログラム162 、および「ディ
スク使用監視均衡化プログラム<"disk usage monitor a
nd balancing program">164 を含む。ファイル移動プロ
グラム162 は、指定したファイルをディスク間で移動す
る。使用監視均衡化プログラムは、その詳細は後述する
が、本システムのディスク記憶装置106-110 の込み具合
と入出力動作の相対頻度とを監視する。観測したディス
ク使用状況に基づき、システムの性能に悪影響を与える
ような使用不均衡があれば、このシステム100 の利用者
には気付かないうちに、ディスク記憶装置間でファイル
を移動することにより、この不均衡を是正する。
【００１６】〔一段階ファイル探索<single level file
lookup>〕図２に示すように、大部分の現行ファイル・
システムでは、システム内のファイル探索に、一段階フ
ァイル探索の仕組みを使用している。これらのファイル
・システムは、ファイル登録簿152 を用いてファイル名
を独特のファイル識別子またはディスク番地に翻訳し、
それらを用いて、ファイル記述子テーブル154 の中に記
載されたそのファイルの記述子170 （ファイル・ヘッダ
またはファイル記述子見出しとも呼ぶ）の所在を追跡す
る。このシステム内の各ディスクまたは論理ディスク・
ボリュームは固有のファイル記述子テーブル154 を有
し、それがディスク上に記憶されている。このファイル
記述子テーブル154 に含まれるファイル記述子見出し17
0 が、その特定ディスクまたは論理ディスク・ボリュー
ムに記憶された各ファイルを記述している。各ファイル
記述子見出し170 は、一個のファイルの属性を定義し、
記憶マップまたはそれ相当のものを含んでいる。
【００１７】一個の「論理ディスク・ボリューム」には
複数の物理的ディスクを含むことがあるが、コンピュー
タ・システムは、記憶格納という目的から、これを単一
のディスク駆動装置として見なすことに注意されたい。
この明細書においてはその目的から、「ディスク」およ
び「ディスク記憶装置」とは、何らかの論理ディスク・
ボリュームを意味し、その論理ボリュームが物理ディス
クとして一個か多数個かには無関係であるものとする。
【００１８】図２に示すように、二個またはそれ以上の
応用プログラム172-176 は、通常別処理を実行中であ
り、これらは単一のファイル178 に対して同時または別
時刻にアクセスが可能である。更に、各プログラムまた
は各処理はこの同一ファイルに対して別名を使用でき
る。このようなファイル名のそれぞれに対して、コンピ
ュータ・システムのファイル登録簿<file directories>
152 の一つごとに別々の一個の登録項目<directory ite
m>180 が存在している。しかし、各ファイルに対しては
唯一のファイル記述子170 が対応し、従って二個または
それ以上のファイル登録簿見出し<file derectory entr
ies>が同一のファイル記述子170 を指示する場合があ
る。こうしたファイル共用は極めて普通に行なわれる。
【００１９】図２に示す一段階探索方式での問題は、フ
ァイルの他のディスクへの移動が難しいことである。こ
のようなファイル・システムでファイルを移動させると
すれば二種類の方法がある。第一の方法では、新ディス
ク上に新ファイル記述子を割り当てた後、ファイルと旧
ファイル記述子170 の内容を新ディスクへ複写する。そ
の後ファイル・システムは旧ファイル記述子を削除し、
旧ディスク上のファイル登録簿152 を更新して、それが
新記述子を指示するようにする。この方法の問題点は、
図２に示すように、多くのファイル・システムで、各フ
ァイルごとに多数の登録簿見出しを認めていることであ
る。その結果として、このファイル・システムは、全コ
ンピュータ・システムにわたりあらゆるファイル登録簿
152 を残らず探索し、移動したファイルに属する見出し
が無いかどうか調べる必要があり、これは数百、数千の
ファイル登録簿を有する大規模システムでは容易に実行
できない。さもなければ各ファイルに対するあらゆる登
録簿見出しを何らかの手段で常時追跡する必要がある
が、これは簡単なことでなない。
【００２０】ファイルを他のディスクへ移動する第二の
方法は、最初の段階は上記と同じである、新ファイル記
述子を新ディスク上に割り当て、ファイルと旧ファイル
記述子170 の内容とを新ディスクへ複写する。これに次
いで、ファイル・システムは旧ファイル記述子170 を書
き替え、それが新ディスクを指示するようにする。この
方法の問題点は、システムの各ディスクが「転送番地<"
forwarding address">」ファイル記述子によって散らか
されることである。換言すれば、一個のディスクに対す
るファイル記述子テーブル154 が最後には、他のディス
クへの転送番地を含む多数の見出し170 で充満する結果
となる。その結果、ディスク記憶空間が浪費され、ある
デイスクをファイル・システムから除去することはほと
んど不可能になる、というのは、ファイル記述子見出し
170 は転送番地を含むことから、以前そのディスクに記
憶された全ファイルの所在を追跡する必要があるからで
ある。
【００２１】このように、現行ファイル・システムの主
要な欠陥の一つは、あるファイルをそれが削除されるま
で特定のディスクに固定せざるを得ないことである。
【００２２】〔二段階ファイル探索<Two Level File Lo
okup> 〕図３に示すように、本発明に基づくファイル・
システム140 では、ファイル探索の仕組みにもう一段階
が加わり、それによりこのファイル・システムが装置と
は独立なファイルの実現を可能にしている。この望まし
い実施例では、「ファイル登録簿」と「ファイル記述子
テーブル」との間に「タグ登録簿<Tag Directory> 」を
追加することにより、これを達成している。
【００２３】本ファイル・システム140 は、変形<modif
ied>ファイル登録簿見出し204 を記載した、変形ファイ
ル登録簿202-1,202-2 を用いて、ファイル名をここでは
タグと呼ぶ識別子<identifier>に翻訳し、このタグはタ
グ登録簿156 におけるタグ見出し208 を指示する。換言
すれば、本発明におけるファイル登録簿見出し204 は、
ファイル記述子見出しへのポインタの代わりにタグ値<t
ag value> を格納している。
【００２４】タグ登録簿156 は、本ファイル・システム
140 全体に対して、その含むディスクの数には無関係に
唯一個しか存在しない。このタグ登録簿156 の二次記憶
における格納位置は、本ファイル・システム140 に関し
て常に一定不変である。あるファイルが多数の登録簿見
出し204 を有する場合には、これら見出しにはすべて同
一のタグ値が記載されている。本ファイル・システム
は、タグ登録簿156 を用いて、タグ値（ファイル登録簿
に見出される）をディスク番地に翻訳し、これにより指
定されたディスク上の記述子テーブル154 への見出しを
求める。ここでの翻訳とは、単にこの指定されたタグ値
に対応するタグ見出し208 を見付け、次いでそのタグ見
出し208 に記憶されたディスク識別子とファイル記述子
索引値<index value> を検索するだけである。こうし
て、各タグ見出し208 によってファイルを記憶するディ
スクが識別でき、ファイル記述子170 を参照することに
よりそのディスク上でのファイルの位置の確定が可能に
なる。
【００２５】図４を参照すると、上記の探索方式を用い
て、本ファイル・システムのファイル移動ルーチン162
が、指定したファイルを以下のステップを踏んで（順序
は必ずしもこうとは限らない）移動する様子が示されて
いる： Ａ．一個の新ファイル記述子見出しを、新ディスク、す
なわちそのファイルの移動先のディスクに割り当てる
（ステップ210)。 Ｂ．ファイルおよびそのファイル記述子見出しを、旧デ
ィスクから新ディスクへ複写する (ステップ212)。 Ｃ．旧ファイル記述子見出しとそのファイルへのディス
ク空間の割り当てとを削除する (ステップ214)。 Ｄ．そのファイルのタグ見出しを、それが新ファイル記
述子見出しを指示するよう、更新する (ステップ216)。
【００２６】通常、如何なる大規模コンピュータ・シス
テムでもそうであるように、この処理経過中は、ファイ
ル・システムによって経過記録データ<transactional l
og entries> が生成され、これにより、上記ファイル移
動処理の如何なる点でシステム障害があっても、それに
よるデータ紛失無しにシステムが復旧できるようにして
いる。このような経過復旧諸技術は本発明の範囲ではな
く当業者には周知である。
【００２７】本発明のタグ登録簿156 の方式によって、
ファイル移動に際し単一項目の更新で済むという点は、
在来のファイル・システムで多数ファイル登録簿見出し
の更新を要するのとは対照的である。同様、タグ登録簿
156 を記載したディスクをファイル・システムから削除
する必要のある場合か、またはタグ登録簿156 を何か他
の理由から配置変更する必要が生じた場合にも、このタ
グ登録簿156 の他のディスクへの移動が可能である。こ
のタグ登録簿を単に新ディスクに複写し、それに従って
タグ登録簿位置（ファイル・システムが維持）を更新す
れば足りる。
【００２８】図５を参照すると、タグ登録簿156 は頁23
2 の配列<array>230として形成され、各頁232 にはヘッ
ダー<header>（図示せず）およびタグ・ポインタ列が記
載されている。論理的に、タグ登録簿156 は単にタグ見
出しの配列であり、各タグ見出しは一個のタグを示し、
各見出しはタグ１から出発して番号順に整列<are sorte
d>している。タグは番号順に割り当てられ、再利用され
ることはない（一旦ファイルが削除されるとそのタグは
再度利用されない）。
【００２９】タグ登録簿のこの簡単な構成により、タグ
の探索は迅速で能率が良い。一個のタグを探索するに
は、そのタグの頁番号とその頁におけるタグの位置を算
定するだけでよい。次の公式が使用される：

【００３０】幾つかのファイルが削除されると、これら
に関連するタグが無効になる。タグは決して再利用され
ないので、タグ登録簿の頁には、時間とともに再利用の
可能性のない無効見出しの割合が増える。最終的に、タ
グ登録簿156 の何頁かは、ほとんど現用タグ見出しを含
まないこととなる。有効タグ見出しが皆無の頁は簡単に
削除できるが、現用見出しが数件しかない頁は、仮にそ
の残存するタグ見出しが削除されないファイルに対応す
るとしても、長期にわたりディスク空間を浪費すること
となる。
【００３１】一個の望ましい実施例において、一個のタ
グ登録簿頁230 が一定数の有効見出し以下しか含まなく
なると（例えばタグ見出し 1,000個のうち有効見出しが
５個を割ると）直ちに、残存有効タグ見出しは二次タグ
登録簿240 に複写され、このタグ登録簿頁230 は割り当
てを解除される<de-allocated>。本ファイル・システム
には二次タグ登録簿240 は一個しか存在せず、タグ見出
しをびっしり詰め込んだ形態<dense ordered array of
tag entries>で実現している。換言すれば、この二次タ
グ登録簿240 には不使用空間はほぼ皆無に等しく、ディ
スク空間の浪費を回避している。これを実現するため
に、登録簿240 内ではタグを厳密に番号順に記憶し二分
探索法<binary search> を用いて項目を見付けるか、そ
れともハッシュ・テーブル<hash table>を利用して二次
タグ見出し登録簿240 の中の項目を迅速に探しだすかす
る。二次タグ登録簿240 へのアクセスは、あるタグが一
次タグ登録簿配列230 に見つからなかった場合にのみ行
なわれる。
【００３２】本ファイル・システムにおいて、ファイル
名を与えられてそのファイルを探索する過程は以下の通
りである。第一にファイル登録簿によりファイル名をタ
グに翻訳する。第二に、一次タグ登録簿配列230 を用い
て、そのタグを、ディスク識別子、およびそのディスク
のファイル記述子テーブル内の、該当項目に対する索引
またはポインタに翻訳する。第三に、そのタグが一次タ
グ登録簿配列230 内に見つからなかった場合には、二次
タグ登録簿240 にアクセスして、そのタグをディスク識
別子およびファイル記述子項目ポインタに翻訳する。
【００３３】一次タグ登録簿配列230 ではディスク空間
の利用効率を犠牲にしてタグ探索の迅速化を計り、二次
タグ登録簿240 では、タグ探索速度を多少犠牲にしてデ
ィスク空間利用の向上を計っている。
【００３４】〔ディスク監視とファイル移動の自動化〕
本発明によるファイルの透明な（システムの利用者に影
響を与えない）移動能力を利用すれば、システム運営者
は、周期的に本ファイル・システムのディスクの残存容
量を把握し、その結果に応じて、ディスク容量を均等化
するためファイルを移動し、こうして何れかのディスク
またはディスク群の空き空間が枯渇するのを防止でき
る。またこのシステム運営者は、本ファイル・システム
の各ディスクの負荷（ディスクへの入出力動作の頻度）
を周期的に監視することを試みて、各種ディスクの負荷
均等化のためファイルを移動することもできよう。負荷
の均等化の重要なのは、一個のディスク記憶装置の各デ
ィスク・アーム駆動器<actuator>が、一秒あたりある限
られた回数の入出力動作、通常25回程度までしか扱えな
いからである。最も活発に使用されるファイルが数多く
一個のディスクに集中して記憶されると、そのディスク
の入出力隘路によりシステムの性能が低下する可能性が
ある。
【００３５】しかし、本発明を用いることにより、ある
ディスクから他のディスクへのファイルの移動が実現で
きるとなると、ディスクの入出力負荷とディスク容量の
監視過程を自動化し、更にファイルを自動的に移動して
ディスク負荷かディスク容量、または双方の均等化を計
ることも実現可能になる。
【００３６】図６に示すように、望ましい一実施例にお
いては、本ファイル・システムは一個のディスク使用監
視・均等化ルーチン164 を有し、このルーチンの働き
で、単にディスク容量とディスク負荷が監視できるのみ
でなく、例えばこれら二種類のディスク使用パラメータ
の標準偏差など、統計的な時間平均値の算出も可能にな
る (ステップ250)。この使用可能容量とディスク負荷に
関する百分率の標準偏差値はディスク使用状態のバラつ
きの指標である。これらの値で重要なのは、時間平均を
とること、すなわち低域濾波することであり、こうする
ことにより、ディスク動作の短時間尖頭値あるいは大量
のディスク空間を短時間しか占有しない一時的処理など
に起因して、不必要に多数のファイルを移動することが
ないよう回避できる。
【００３７】ディスク負荷の標準偏差が、予め選択して
あった一つの敷居値を超えた場合 (ステップ252)、この
敷居値はシステムの性能の受容・非受容の境界線の指標
なので、プログラム164 は、最も負荷の重いディスク上
のファイルを、最も負荷の軽い同機能（アクセス速度、
可用率など）のディスクへ移動させる (ステップ254)。
同様に、ディスク容量のパラメターが、予め選択してあ
った一つの敷居値を超えた場合 (ステップ256)、プログ
ラム164 は、残容量が平均より遥かに少ないディスク上
のファイルを、最も残容量の大きい同機能のディスクへ
移動させる (ステップ258)。その後もこうした過程が繰
り返される。ディスク使用状況が依然として不均衡であ
れば、ファイルを更に移動し、算定したディスク使用統
計値が受容システム性能に関する指定敷居値基準を満た
すまでこの動作を続ける。この過程の一回の反復あたり
の移動ファイル数は、極力控え目とし、不要なファイル
移動を回避する。
【００３８】他の実施例におけるファイルの再配置決定
基準として、ディスク容量とディスク負荷の標準偏差と
は別の基準を採用することも可能である。
【００３９】本発明に関して数種類の特定実施例を参照
しながら説明してきたが、この記述は本発明の説明が目
的であり発明の内容を制限するものではない。当業者に
とっては、冒頭の請求項に定義した本発明の、真の精神
と範囲を逸脱することなしに各種の変形が可能になる筈
である。

Claims (8)

    【特許請求の範囲】
  1. 【請求項１】 一つの中央処理ユニットと多数の異種デ
    ータ記憶装置を有するコンピュータ・システムに使用し
    てファイルの選択的再配置を行なうファイル・システム
    において、 多数のファイル登録簿が存在し、それらは上記多数のデ
    ータ記憶装置の各所に蓄積され、各登録簿にはそれぞれ
    一組のファイル登録簿見出しが記載され、これらファイ
    ル登録簿見出しはそれぞれ一つのファイル名と一つの対
    応するタグ値を明示し、そこでは一つのファイルに対応
    して多数のファイル名が上記多数のファイル登録簿のう
    ち複数に記憶されている場合があり、 上記多数のデータ記憶装置の一つごとに別々のファイル
    記述子テーブルが存在し、各ファイル記述子テーブルに
    は、対応するデータ記憶装置上に記憶されたすべてのフ
    ァイル一つごとに一つのファイル記述子見出しが記載さ
    れ、 唯一つのタグ登録簿が存在し、それは上記多数のデータ
    記憶装置のうちから選んだ一つの上に記憶され、別に定
    義した一組のタグ値に対するタグ見出しを格納し、そこ
    では、上記多数のデータ記憶装置に記憶された各ファイ
    ルが上記タグ見出しのうち唯一つにより表示され、上記
    タグ見出しは、それぞれ上記多数のデータ記憶装置のう
    ち、上記タグ見出しに対応するファイルを記憶する一つ
    の装置を明示し、そして、 ファイル移動手段が存在し、それは上記中央処理ユニッ
    トにより動作可能であって、指定したファイルを上記多
    数のデータ記憶装置のうち第一の装置から第二の装置へ
    と移動することを目的とし、その手段の中には、上記指
    定したファイルを上記多数のデータ記憶装置のうち上記
    第二の装置に複写する手段、上記多数のデータ記憶装置
    のうち上記第二の装置に対する上記ファイル記述子テー
    ブル上に上記複写ファイルに対するファイル記述子見出
    しを生成する手段、および、上記指定したファイルに対
    応する上記タグ登録簿におけるタグ見出しを変更して、
    上記タグ見出しが上記多数のデータ記憶装置のうち上記
    第二の装置を明示する手段を含み、 このようにして、一つのファイルを上記多数のデータ記
    憶装置のうち第一の装置から第二の装置へ移動させるの
    に、対応するあらゆるファイル登録簿見出しの位置を突
    き止めて更新する必要のないことを特徴とするファイル
    ・システム。
  2. 【請求項２】 請求項１に記載のファイル・システムに
    おいて、更に、データ記憶使用監視手段が存在し、その
    手段は上記中央処理ユニットによって実行可能であり、
    この手段により、上記多数のデータ記憶装置の使用を監
    視し、上記使用が不均衡であるかどうかの指標となる統
    計値を算定し、上記で算定した統計値を予め定めた基準
    と比較し、そして上記の予め定めた基準に合致した際に
    は、上記多数のデータ記憶装置間でファイルを自動的に
    移動してそれらの負荷の均衡を改善することを特徴とす
    るファイル・システム。
  3. 【請求項３】 請求項１に記載のファイル・システムに
    おいて、更に、データ記憶使用監視手段を含み、その手
    段は上記中央処理ユニットにより実行可能であり、この
    手段により、上記多数のデータ記憶装置のそれぞれの不
    使用容量を監視し、上記不使用容量が上記多数のデータ
    記憶装置の間に不均等に分布しているかどうかの指標と
    なる統計値を算定し、上記で算定した統計値を予め定め
    た基準と比較し、そして上記の予め定めた基準に合致し
    た際には、上記多数のデータ記憶装置間でファイルを自
    動的に移動し、上記多数のデータ記憶装置間で不使用容
    量をより均等に分布させることを特徴とするファイル・
    システム。
  4. 【請求項４】 請求項３に記載のファイル・システムに
    おいて、上記データ記憶使用監視手段には更に、上記多
    数のデータ記憶装置のそれぞれの負荷状況を監視し、上
    記負荷状況が上記多数のデータ記憶装置間で不均等に分
    布しているかどうかの指標となる時間平均統計値を算定
    し、上記の算定した統計値を予め定めた基準と比較し、
    そして上記の予め定めた基準に合致した際には、上記多
    数のデータ記憶装置間でファイルを自動的に移動して上
    記多数のデータ記憶装置間で負荷状況を一層均等に分布
    させるための手段を含む、ことを特徴とするファイル・
    システム。
  5. 【請求項５】 多数の異種データ記憶装置を有するコン
    ピュータ・システムの中で記憶空間を割り当てる方法に
    おいて、 上記多数のデータ記憶装置の各所に多数のファイル登録
    簿を記憶し、上記登録簿のそれぞれには一組のファイル
    登録簿見出しを記載し、各ファイル登録簿見出しは一つ
    のファイル名と一つの対応するタグ値を明示し、そこで
    は単一のファイルに対応して多数のファイル名が上記フ
    ァイル登録簿の多数の中に記憶されている場合があり、 上記多数のデータ記憶装置上には一装置ごとに別個のフ
    ァイル記述子テーブルを記憶し、これら各ファイル記述
    子テーブルは、対応するデータ記憶装置上に記憶された
    各ファイルごと一つのファイル記述子を記載し、 上記多数のデータ記憶装置のうち特定の唯一の装置の上
    には、定義された一組のタグ値に対するタグ見出しを記
    載した一つのタグ登録簿を記憶し、そこでは、上記多数
    のデータ記憶装置に記憶された各ファイルを上記タグ見
    出しのうちの唯一つによって表示し、上記タグ見出しの
    それぞれは、上記多数のデータ記憶装置のうち上記のタ
    グ見出しに対応するファイルを記憶した装置を明示し、
    そして、 一つの指定したファイルを上記多数のデータ記憶装置の
    第一の装置から第二の装置に移動する手段としてその中
    には、上記指定したファイルを上記多数のデータ記憶装
    置の第二の装置に複写すること、上記多数のデータ記憶
    装置のうち上記第二の装置に対する上記記述子テーブル
    上に上記複写したファイルに対する一つのファイル記述
    子見出しを生成すること、および、上記指定したファイ
    ルに対応する上記タグ登録簿内のタグ見出しを変更して
    上記タグ見出しが上記多数のデータ記憶装置のうち上記
    第二の装置を明示するようにすること、の各項を含み、 こうすることにより、一つのファイルを上記多数のデー
    タ記憶装置のうち第一から第二の装置に移動するのに際
    し、対応するあらゆるファイル登録簿見出しの位置を突
    き止めて更新する必要がないことを特徴とする記憶空間
    の割り当て方法。
  6. 【請求項６】 請求項５に記載の記憶空間割り当て方法
    において、更に、 上記多数のデータ記憶装置の使用を監視すること、上記
    使用が不均衡であるかどうかの指標として対応する統計
    値を算定すること、上記の算定した統計値を予め定めた
    基準と比較すること、および、上記の予め定めた基準に
    合致した際には上記多数の記憶装置間でファイルを自動
    的に移動しそれらの使用の均衡を改善すること、を含む
    ことを特徴とする記憶空間割り当て方法。
  7. 【請求項７】 請求項５に記載の記憶空間割り当て方法
    において、更に、 上記多数のデータ記憶装置のそれぞれにおける不使用容
    量を監視すること、上記不使用容量が上記多数のデータ
    記憶装置間で不均等に分布しているかどうかの指標とな
    る統計値を算定すること、上記の算定した統計値を予め
    定めた基準と比較すること、および、上記の予め定めた
    基準と合致した際には、上記多数のデータ記憶装置間で
    ファイルを自動的に移動し上記多数のデータ記憶装置間
    で不使用容量をより均等に分布させること、を含むこと
    を特徴とする記憶空間割り当て方法。
  8. 【請求項８】 請求項７に記載の記憶空間割り当て方法
    において、更に、 上記多数のデータ記憶装置のそれぞれの負荷状況を監視
    すること、上記負荷状況が上記多数のデータ記憶装置間
    に不均等に分布しているかどうかの指標となる時間平均
    統計値を算定すること、上記の算定した統計値を予め定
    めた基準と比較すること、および、上記予め定めた基準
    に合致した際には、上記多数のデータ記憶装置間でファ
    イルを移動し上記多数のデータ記憶装置間で負荷状況を
    一層均等になるよう分布させること、を含むことを特徴
    とする記憶空間割り当て方法。
