「Printmax」は、シーレ・カオリン社の微粒径デラミカオリン粘土製品の商標である。
「CLC」は、センサー・アンド・シミュレーション・プロダクト社(Sensor & Simulation Products)の円筒形実験室塗工機を指す。
「LWC」は、軽量コーティング試験(light weight coating study)を指す。
「RSV」は、相対沈降体積(relative sediment volume)を指す。
「KM」は、クベルカ−ムンク(Kubelka-Munk)を指す。
「消石灰」は、水酸化カルシウムの通称である。
「生石灰」は、酸化カルシウムの通称である。
「PSD」は、粒径分布を指す。

「炭酸化サイクル」は、消石灰を添加すること、およびそれに続いて鉱物顔料/消石灰混合物に二酸化炭素を通すことを指す。
総量3,000gのグレイモント社(Graymont)(ペンシルベニア州)のPCCグレードのペブル生石灰を、温かい水道水中で1:5.5の石灰対水の比で消和した。混合器付き5ガロン容高密度ポリエチレン(HDPE)容器中で、温度を30〜90℃の範囲、好ましくは50〜70℃の範囲に制御して、生石灰の温水への添加を減速することによって石灰消和を行い、充分な反応性および細粒径をもつ消石灰(Ca(OH)2)を得た。消石灰スラリーを325メッシュのふるいにかけて粗粒を除いて、17.8%の固形分でスラリーを得た。

実施例2で使用したのと同じ生石灰を消和し、325メッシュのふるいによって粗粒を除いた。Printmaxカオリンの噴霧乾燥機供給スラリーを、15%の固形分にまで希釈した。30%の炭酸カルシウムを含む4種の複合顔料を、炭酸化サイクル1回当たり2.9、2.4、2.1%、および1.8%のCa(OH)2をそれぞれ添加して、11回、13回、15回、および18回の炭酸化サイクルを用いて合成した。実験条件、ならびに結果として生じた複合顔料のSedigraph PSD、白色度を、Printmaxカオリン供給物とともに表5に報告する。
特別に設計された、底部に2つのAFD270 EPDM膜ディスク拡散器をもつ55ガロン容反応装置中で、パイロットプラント規模(70lb)の複合顔料を合成した。Cameuse生石灰を、50ガロン容円筒型容器中で消和し、325メッシュのふるいによって粗粒を除いた。Air Gas South社の液体CO2をCO2源として使用した。KWSの噴霧乾燥機供給スラリーを、15%の固形分にまで希釈した。炭酸化サイクル1回当たり6.3、3.2、および2.1%のCa(OH)2をそれぞれ添加し、5回、10回、および15回の炭酸化サイクルを用いて、30%の炭酸カルシウムをもつ3種の複合顔料を合成した。比較のため、複合顔料を、実験室反応装置中で同じ供給材料を用いて15回の炭酸化サイクルで合成した。実験条件、結果として生じた複合顔料のSedigraph PSD、および白色度を、KWSとともに表7に報告する。
Claims (24)
- 鉱物顔料およびin situ沈降炭酸カルシウムを含み、複数回の炭酸化サイクルによって製造され、該鉱物顔料の粒子の表面に炭酸カルシウムを沈殿させてなる高白色複合顔料であって、
該複合顔料は、出発鉱物顔料と比較して、0.2ミクロン未満の粒子の含有量が少なく、出発鉱物顔料と比較して、1〜2ミクロンの粒子の含有量が同等(equivalent)であるか、または多く、
前記複合顔料が、前記鉱物顔料の粒子の表面に、離散的な炭酸カルシウム粒子または炭酸カルシウム粒子の凝集体とは異なる、沈降炭酸カルシウムの均一なコーティングを有する高白色複合顔料。 - 前記鉱物顔料が、カオリン粘土、二酸化チタン、タルク、雲母、またはこれらの鉱物顔料2つ以上の混合物である請求項1記載の複合顔料。
- 前記鉱物顔料がカオリン粘土である請求項2記載の複合顔料。
- 前記カオリン粘土が含水カオリン粘土である請求項3記載の複合顔料。
- 前記カオリン粘土がデラミカオリン粘土である請求項3記載の複合顔料。
- 前記カオリン粘土が焼成カオリン粘土である請求項3記載の複合顔料。
- 前記カオリン粘土が含水カオリン粘土および焼成カオリン粘土の混合物である請求項3記載の複合顔料。
- 前記鉱物顔料の表面に沈殿した炭酸カルシウムの量が、乾燥複合顔料の重量に対して5.0〜90.0重量パーセントである請求項1記載の複合顔料。
- 前記鉱物顔料の表面に沈殿した炭酸カルシウムの量が、乾燥複合顔料の重量に対して10.0〜60.0重量パーセントである請求項1記載の複合顔料。
- 前記鉱物顔料の表面に沈殿した炭酸カルシウムの量が、乾燥複合顔料の重量に対して20.0〜40.0重量パーセントである請求項1記載の複合顔料。
- 前記複合顔料が、二酸化チタン、タルク、雲母、またはこれらの材料の混合物をさらに含む請求項1記載の複合顔料。
- 前記炭酸カルシウムが、前記鉱物顔料の表面に均一に沈殿する請求項1記載の複合顔料。
- 鉱物顔料および炭酸カルシウムを含む高白色複合顔料を製造する方法であって、該方法が、
(a)該鉱物顔料の粒子のスラリーを得る工程、
(b)消石灰を該スラリーに加えて混合物を形成する工程、
(c)二酸化炭素ガスを該混合物に通して該鉱物顔料粒子の表面に炭酸カルシウムを沈殿させる工程、
(d)該混合物のpHが7.0になったときに該二酸化炭素ガスの通気を停止する工程、および
(e)工程(b)〜(d)を複数回繰り返して該複合顔料を製造する工程を含み、
該複合顔料は、出発鉱物顔料と比較して、0.2ミクロン未満の粒子の含有量が少なく、出発鉱物顔料と比較して、1〜2ミクロンの粒子の含有量が同等(equivalent)であるか、または多く、
前記複合顔料が、前記鉱物顔料の粒子の表面に、離散的な炭酸カルシウム粒子または炭酸カルシウム粒子の凝集体とは異なる、沈降炭酸カルシウムの均一なコーティングを有する方法。 - 前記鉱物顔料が、カオリン粘土、二酸化チタン、タルク、雲母、またはこれらの鉱物顔料2つ以上の混合物である請求項13記載の方法。
- 前記鉱物顔料がカオリン粘土である請求項13記載の方法。
- 前記カオリン粘土が含水カオリン粘土である請求項15記載の方法。
- 前記カオリン粘土がデラミカオリン粘土である請求項15記載の方法。
- 前記カオリン粘土が焼成カオリン粘土である請求項15記載の方法。
- 前記カオリン粘土が含水カオリン粘土および焼成カオリン粘土の混合物である請求項15記載の方法。
- 前記複合顔料中の炭酸カルシウムの量が、乾燥複合顔料の重量に対して5.0〜90.0重量パーセントである請求項13記載の方法。
- 前記複合顔料中の炭酸カルシウムの量が、乾燥複合顔料の重量に対して10.0〜60.0重量パーセントである請求項13記載の方法。
- 前記複合顔料中の炭酸カルシウムの量が、乾燥複合顔料の重量に対して20.0〜40.0重量パーセントである請求項13記載の方法。
- 前記炭酸カルシウムが、前記鉱物顔料の表面に均一に沈殿する請求項13記載の方法。
- 前記複合顔料が、二酸化チタン、タルク、雲母、またはこれらの材料の混合物をさらに含む請求項13記載の方法。
