Description
このレンチキュラレンズを用いた立体表示装置は、例えば、液晶表示パネルなどの表示面上にレンチキュラレンズを配置し、液晶表示パネルに左眼用の画像と右眼用の画像とを交互に表示し、当該左眼用の画像と右眼用の画像とを、レンチキュラレンズで分離する。観察者は、レンチキュラレンズで分離された左眼用の画像と右眼用の画像とを、それぞれ左眼および右眼で観察することにより、3次元立体像を観察することができる。
このレンチキュラレンズを用いた立体表示装置において、レンチキュラレンズとして、液晶レンズセルを使用するものが、下記特許文献1に記載されている。
そのため、液晶レンズセルを用いた立体表示装置において、高温高湿状態になると、液晶レンズセルの液晶層に水分が進入し、温度を下げると液晶層中に溶けた水分が溶出してくるという問題があった。
本発明は、前記従来技術の問題点を解決するためになされたものであり、本発明の目的は、液晶レンズセルを用いた立体表示装置において、温度を下げたときに、液晶レンズセルの液晶層中に溶けた水分が溶出してくるのを防止することが可能となる技術を提供することにある。
本発明の前記ならびにその他の目的と新規な特徴は、本明細書の記述及び添付図面によって明らかにする。
(1)表示装置と、前記表示装置上に配置される液晶レンズセルとを備え、前記液晶レンズセルは、第1の基板と、第2の基板と、前記第1の基板と前記第2の基板との間に狭持される液晶層と、前記第1の基板の前記液晶層側に配置される第1の電極と、前記第2の基板の前記液晶層側に配置される第2の電極とを有する立体表示装置であって、前記液晶レンズセルは、前記第1の基板および第2の基板の少なくとも一方の基板の前記液晶層側に配置される吸水膜を有する。
(2)(1)において、前記吸水膜は、アクリル樹脂、あるいはエポキシ樹脂で構成される。
(3)(1)において、前記吸水膜は、前記第1の基板と前記第1の電極との間、あるいは、前記第1の電極の前記液晶層側に配置される。
(4)(1)において、前記吸水膜は、前記第2の基板と前記第2の電極との間、あるいは、前記第2の電極の前記液晶層側に配置される。
(6)(1)において、前記第1の電極は、櫛歯電極であり、前記第2の電極は、平面状の電極であり、前記液晶層の厚さをd、前記櫛歯電極のピッチをQとするとき、3.5<(Q/d)<7、好ましくは、4.5<(Q/d)<5.5、より好ましくは、 (Q/d)=5を満足する。
(7)(1)において、前記第1の電極は、櫛歯電極であり、前記第2の電極は、平面状の電極であり、前記櫛歯電極のピッチをQ、前記櫛歯電極の幅をLとするとき、10<(Q/L)、好ましくは、15<(Q/d)<20を満足する。
(8)(1)において、前記液晶層の内部に配置されるビーズスペーサを有し、前記液晶層の1mm2当たりの前記ビーズスペーサ量は、10個以下である。
本発明によれば、液晶レンズセルを用いた立体表示装置において、温度を下げたときに、液晶レンズセルの液晶層中に溶けた水分が溶出してくるのを防止することが可能となる。
なお、実施例を説明するための全図において、同一機能を有するものは同一符号を付け、その繰り返しの説明は省略する。また、以下の実施例は、本発明の特許請求の範囲の解釈を限定するためのものではない。
[実施例1]
図1は、本発明の実施例1の立体表示装置の概略構成を示すブロック図である。
図1に示すように、本実施例の立体表示装置は、表示装置100と、液晶レンズセル101とで構成される。表示装置100は、液晶表示パネル、あるいは、自発光ディスプレイである有機EL表示パネルなどが使用される。
液晶レンズセル101は、透明な接着部材102により、表示装置100上に貼り付けられる。ここで、透明な接着部材102は、例えばUV硬化樹脂などで構成される。
図2に示すように、液晶レンズセル101は、第1の基板(SUB1)と、第2の基板(SUB2)と、第1の基板(SUB1)と第2の基板(SUB2)との間に狭持される液晶層(LC)とを有する。第1の基板(SUB1)及び第2の基板(SUB2)は、例えば、ガラス基板などの透明基板で構成される。ここで、第1の基板(SUB1)の液晶層(LC)と反対側の面が、接着部材102により、表示装置100上に貼り付けられる。したがって、第2の基板(SUB2)の液晶層(LC)と反対側の面が、観察者が観察する観察面となる。
第1の基板(SUB1)の液晶層(LC)側の面には、第1の電極(EL1)が形成され、この第1の電極(EL1)上には、配向膜(AL1)が形成される。同様に、第2の基板(SUB2)の液晶層(LC)側の面には、第2の電極(EL2)が形成され、この第2の電極(EL2)上には、配向膜(AL2)が形成される。なお、図2では、液晶層(LC)の間隔を一定に保つビーズスペーサの図示は省略している。
図2において、10は吸水膜であり、吸水膜10は、吸水性がある透明な有機材料の膜が望ましく、例えば透明なアクリル樹脂やエポキシ樹脂などが用いられる。特にアクリル樹脂は吸水性に優れているので望ましい。
ここで、配向膜(AL1,AL2)の配向方向は、水平方向である。また、液晶層(LC)は、正の誘電率異方性材料を用いる。
図3は、図2に示す第1の電極(EL1)および第2の電極(EL2)の電極形状を示す図である。図3(a)に示すように、第2の電極(EL2)は、平面状の電極であり、図3(b)に示すように、第1の電極(EL1)は、櫛歯電極とされる。
ここで、第1の電極(EL1)および第2の電極(EL2)は、例えば、ITO(Indium Tin Oxide)などの透明電極で構成される。なお、図2は、図3(b)のA−A’切断線に沿った断面構造を図示している。
第1の電極(EL1)と第2の電極(EL2)との間で交流の電圧を印加する。例えば、第1の電極(EL1)に、第2の電極(EL2)よりも高電位の電圧を供給すると、図4(a)に示すように、電気力線20は、第1の電極(EL1)から第2の電極(EL2)に向う方向に生じ、図示は省略するが、第2の電極(EL2)に、第1の電極(EL1)よりも高電位の電圧を供給すると、電気力線20は、第2の電極(EL2)から第1の電極(EL1)に向かう方向に生じる。
また、図4(b)に示すように、第1の電極(EL1)と第2の電極(EL2)との間に電圧を印加しない状態では、液晶分子30は、第1の基板(SUB1)と第2の基板(SUB2)に平行な状態になっている。この場合、表示装置100に表示された画像はそのまま通過するので、観察者は、2次元画像を観察することができる。
また、図4(c)に示すように、第1の電極(EL1)と第2の電極(EL2)との間に電圧を印加した状態では、液晶分子30は、電界方向に整列し、液晶層(LC)の屈折率分布が変化する。したがって、表示装置100に交互に表示された左眼用の画像と右眼用の画像とは、液晶レンズセル101を通過する際に、進行方向が変更され分離されるので、観察者は、液晶レンズセル101で分離された左眼用の画像と右眼用の画像とを、それぞれ左眼、および、右眼で観察することにより、3次元立体像を観察することができる。なお、本実施例の立体表示装置において、3次元立体画像が発現する原理については前述の特許文献1を参照されたい。
このように、本実施例では、液晶レンズセル101の屈折率分布によるレンズ効果(GRINレンズ)によって、2次元画像と3次元立体画像とを切り替えることが可能となる。
図5は、第1の電極(EL1)を構成する櫛歯電極のピッチQと、液晶層(LC)の厚さdとの比(Q/d)が、クロストークに及ぼす影響をシミュレーションした結果を示すグラフである。
なお、クロストークとは、第1の電極(EL1)と第2の電極(EL2)との間に電圧を印加し、3次元立体像を表示した状態において、左眼用の画像に、右目用の画像が混入する割合(あるいは、右眼用の画像に、左目用の画像が混入する割合)を表す。
クロストークは1%以下であると人間の目には認識しづらくなるため、図5から分かるように、(Q/d)は、3.5<(Q/d)<7であることが望ましく、さらに、クロストークを下げるために、好ましくは、4.5<(Q/d)<5.5が望ましく、より好ましくは、(Q/d)は約5(Q/d≒5)が望ましい。即ち、(Q/d)が5のときに最も良いレンズ効果を得ることができる。
図6は、(Q/d)を5としたときに、第1の電極(EL1)を構成する櫛歯電極のピッチQと、櫛歯電極の幅Lとの比(Q/L)が、クロストークに及ぼす影響をシミュレーションした結果を示すグラフである。
図6から分かるように、Q/Lは、15<(Q/L)<20が望ましく、さらに、クロストーク1%以内とすれば、10<(Q/L)が望ましい。
液晶レンズセル101は、レンズ効果を得るために、大きなリタデーション(Δn×d)が必要となる。本実施例では、液晶層(LC)の厚さ(d)を30μmとしたが、すくなくとも20μm以上の大きさのビーズスペーサ(BS)が必要となる。
そのため、観察者に、ビーズスペーサ(BS)が目視されてしまことになるので、図7Aに示すように、液晶レンズセル101の場合は、1mm2当たり1個(1個/mm2)が望ましく、最大でも、1mm2当たり10個(10個/mm2)以下の密度で分散させる必要がある。
一方、図7Bに示すように、一般的な液晶表示パネルでは、1mm2当たり100個〜200個(100個〜200個/mm2)分散するのが普通である。
進入した水分は、液晶層(LC)や、ビーズスペーサ(BS)、配向膜(AL1,AL2)に吸水される。ここで、ビーズスペーサ(BS)が吸水する水分量の速度は、ビーズスペーサ(BS)の表面積に依存する。
液晶レンズセル101に使用される、直径が30μmのビーズスペーサ(BS)の表面積は約2827μm2であり、一般的な液晶表示パネルに使用される、直径が4μmのビーズスペーサ(BS)の表面積は約50μm2である。
ここで、ビーズスペーサ(BS)の個数を1mm2当たり、液晶レンズセル101が10個、一般的な液晶表示パネルが200個とする。この場合、単位体積(1mm3)当たりのビーズスペーサ(BS)の個数を、液晶レンズセル101が1個とすると、一般的な液晶セルは150個となる。
よって、液晶単位体積に占めるビーズスペーサ(BS)の表面積は、
液晶レンズセルが、2827=2827μm2 ×1
一般的な液晶表示パネルが、7540=50μm2 ×150となり、液晶レンズセル101は、一般的な液晶表示パネルに比べ37%となる。
一方、単位体積当たり、30μmのビーズスペーサ(BS)が1個の液晶レンズセル101の吸水率は、約0.1ppm/hrの37%となるので、0.037ppm/hrとなる。
単位体積当たり、30μmのビーズスペーサ(BS)が1個の液晶レンズセル101の内部に入ってくる水分量は0.06ppm/hrなので、液晶レンズセル101のビーズ量では充分に水が吸収できないことを示している。
一方、一般的な液晶表示パネルの場合は液晶層中に進入するすべての水分をビーズスペーサ(BS)が吸収することができる。
なお、前述の計算式の前提となる条件は、液晶レンズセル101内に、30μmのビーズスペーサ(BS)を、10個/mm2分散したと仮定している。
しかしながら、ビーズスペーサ(BS)の分散量を増やしてしまうと、ビーズスペーサ(BS)が見えてしまうために、1個/mm2が望ましい。この条件だと、さらに液晶レンズセル101の内部に進入する水分を吸収できないことを示している。
図8に、水蒸気圧に対する液晶層に進入する水分量のグラフを示した。
水蒸気圧281hPa(例えば、70℃、湿度90%)では進入量は0.06ppm/hrだが、59hPa(例えば、36℃、湿度100%)では、進入量は0.04となる。つまり、吸水膜10を設けない液晶レンズセル101の場合、水蒸気圧60hPa以上の環境に放置し、液晶層(LC)が吸収できる水分量以上が進入すると、水が溶出してしまう。
この課題を解決するために、本実施例では、吸水膜10を図2に示す位置に配置する。前述したように、吸水膜10は、例えば、アクリル樹脂やエポキシ樹脂等の透明有機絶縁膜で構成されており、ビーズスペーサ(BS)に比べると格段に吸収率が高い。
そのため、本実施例では、高温高湿状態にして液晶層(LC)中に水分が進入したとしても、吸水膜10が飽和するまでは、液晶層(LC)中に水がたまることはない。吸収部材に、例えば、透明有機絶縁膜を用いると、70℃、湿度90%の環境下に、2000hr以上放置しても、吸水膜10の飽和値は超えないため、一般的な使用環境においては飽和水分量を超えることはない。
測定結果を図9に示す。この図9のグラフでは、横軸に、液晶層厚/吸水膜厚を取り、縦軸に吸水時間を取った。横軸が大きければ大きいほど、吸水膜10は薄くなる。なお、液晶層厚は30μmとしている。
吸水時間は、液晶層厚/吸水膜厚が7.5以下では飽和した。即ち、吸水時間が変化しなくなる。また、液晶層厚/吸水膜厚が100以上では急激に吸水時間が増加する。
よって、図9の(C)の領域は、吸水時間が急激に伸びるために、望ましくなく、液晶層厚/吸水膜厚は100以下にすることが望ましい。
また、図9の(A)の領域は、吸水膜10の膜厚を厚くする必要があり、吸水膜10の光吸収により透過率が減少する可能性があり、さらに無駄な膜厚により材料コストも上がる。さらに、7.5以下では充分に飽和しているために、7.5<液晶層厚/吸水膜厚<100とすることがより望ましい。
図10は、本発明の実施例2の立体表示装置の液晶レンズセル101の断面構造を示す断面図である。
前述の実施例1との相違点は、図10に示すように、吸水膜10を、櫛歯電極である第1の電極(EL1)上に配置し、吸水膜10上に配向膜(AL1)を配置した点である。
本実施例では、吸水膜10が絶縁性を有していれば、第1の電極(EL1)と第2の電極(EL2)とが接触し、ショートすることも防ぐことができる。さらに、第1の電極(EL1)上に吸水膜10を配置したので、吸水率を向上させることもできる。
図11は、本発明の実施例2の立体表示装置の液晶レンズセルの断面構造を示す断面図である。
前述の実施例1との違いは、図11に示すように、吸水膜10を、第2の基板(SUB2)側で、平面状の電極である第2の電極(EL2)上に配置した点である。
これにより、本実施例では、吸水率を高めることができ、前述の実施例2で問題となる第1の電極(EL1)の段差による吸水膜10のむらも改善することができる。
なお、前述の各実施例において、吸水膜10は、第1の基板(SUB1)と、第2の基板(SUB2)の両方に設けてもよいが、吸水膜10の光吸収により透過率が減少することを考慮すると、吸水膜10は、第1の基板(SUB1)、あるいは、第2の基板(SUB2)のいずれか一方に設けるのが好ましい。
以上、本発明者によってなされた発明を、前記実施例に基づき具体的に説明したが、本発明は、前記実施例に限定されるものではなく、その要旨を逸脱しない範囲において種々変更可能であることは勿論である。

- 表示装置と、
前記表示装置上に配置される液晶レンズセルとを備え、
前記液晶レンズセルは、第1の基板と、
第2の基板と、
前記第1の基板と前記第2の基板との間に狭持される液晶層と、
前記第1の基板の前記液晶層側に配置される第1の電極と、
前記第2の基板の前記液晶層側に配置される第2の電極とを有する立体表示装置であって、
前記第1の電極は、櫛歯電極であり、
前記第2の電極は、平面状の電極であり、
前記液晶レンズセルは、前記第1の基板および第2の基板の少なくとも一方の基板の前記液晶層側に配置される吸水膜を有し、
前記液晶層の厚さをd、吸水膜の厚さをThとするとき、7.5<(d/Th)<100を満足することを特徴とする立体表示装置。 - 前記吸水膜は、アクリル樹脂、あるいは、エポキシ樹脂で構成されることを特徴とする請求項1に記載の立体表示装置。
- 前記吸水膜は、前記第1の基板と前記第1の電極との間に配置されることを特徴とする請求項1に記載の立体表示装置。
- 前記吸水膜は、前記第1の電極の前記液晶層側に配置されることを特徴とする請求項1に記載の立体表示装置。
- 前記吸水膜は、前記第2の基板と前記第2の電極との間に配置されることを特徴とする請求項1に記載の立体表示装置。
- 前記吸水膜は、前記第2の電極の前記液晶層側に配置されることを特徴とする請求項1に記載の立体表示装置。
- 前記液晶層の厚さをd、前記櫛歯電極のピッチをQとするとき、3.5<(Q/d)<7を満足することを特徴とする請求項1に記載の立体表示装置。
- 4.5<(Q/d)<5.5を満足することを特徴とする請求項7に記載の立体表示装置。
- (Q/d)=5を満足することを特徴とする請求項8に記載の立体表示装置。
- 前記櫛歯電極のピッチをQ、前記櫛歯電極の幅をLとするとき、10<(Q/L)を満足することを特徴とする請求項1に記載の立体表示装置。
- 15<(Q/L)<20を満足することを特徴とする請求項10に記載の立体表示装置。
- 前記液晶層の内部に配置されるビーズスペーサを有し、
前記液晶層の1mm 2 当たりの前記ビーズスペーサ量は、10個以下であることを特徴とする請求項1に記載の立体表示装置。
