Description
液晶表示装置の駆動ドライバICの基準電圧は、20ch程度(先の図8においては16chに相当)であり、すべての階調を個々に調整することはできない。また、生産ラインでは、個体ばらつきの調整をコモン電圧Vcomのみの調整で行っているのが現状であり、すべての画素で共通の駆動調整を行っていた。
図1は、本発明の実施の形態1における液晶表示装置に備えられた階調表示電圧補正部の内部構成を示した図である。この階調表示電圧補正部1は、液晶表示装置の有する個別の表示特性に応じて、階調表示の元となる映像信号の電圧レベルおよび中心電圧を補正する機能を有する。なお、この表示特性については、図2を用いて後述する。
図2は、本発明の実施の形態1における液晶表示装置の表示特性を示した図である。液晶表示装置において、与えられた映像信号(階調信号)と、画面に表示される輝度との関係は、図2に示すような表示特性を有しており、この特性は、ガンマ特性と呼ばれている。
本実施の形態2では、RGB画素によるカラー表示を行う液晶表示装置に対して、先の実施の形態1で説明したLUTを備えた階調表示電圧補正部を適用する場合について説明する。
図5は、本発明の実施の形態2におけるLUTを用いたカラー映像信号の電圧レベルの補正に関する説明図である。R正負のLUT41、G正負のLUT51、B正負のLUT61のそれぞれを用いることにより、正負データに対応してRGB個別に補正を行うことができる。
先の実施の形態1、2では、LUTの働きにより、入力した映像信号に基づいて、所望の表示特性を有し、かつ正負のバランスがとれるような補正後の映像信号を得る場合について説明した。これに対して、本実施の形態3では、映像信号のそれぞれのビットをどの入力信号ビットに割り付けるかを特定するビット割付データを得るためにLUTを用いる場合について説明する。
Claims (1)
- ドライバICから出力するアナログ電圧信号の正極性と負極性を切り替えて交流駆動を行うことで階調表示を行う液晶表示装置において、
前記ドライバICは、階調表示の元となる映像信号のビット数よりも高ビット数のデータを処理可能であり、前記映像信号のそれぞれのビットをどの信号ビットに割り付けるかを特定するビット割付データを前記映像信号とともに受け取り、前記映像信号に対応する高ビット数の正極性と負極性の入力信号に応じたアナログ電圧信号を出力するドライバICであり、
前記ドライバICからの出力信号と階調表示される画像の輝度との関係が所望の特性を有し、かつ正負のバランスがとれるように、映像信号の正極性データおよび負極性データのそれぞれに対応したビット割付データを特定するルックアップテーブルを有し、前記映像信号の正極性データおよび負極性データに対応して前記ルックアップテーブルにより特定された前記ビット割付データを前記ドライバICに出力する階調表示電圧補正部を備え、
前記階調表示電圧補正部は、カラー映像信号をRGBごとに分離し、RGBごとに、前記ドライバICからの出力信号と階調表示される画像の輝度との関係が所望の特性を有し、かつ正負のバランスがとれ、さらにRGBのそれぞれの電圧輝度特性のばらつきを抑えるように、RGBごとの正極性データおよび負極性データのそれぞれに対応したビット割付データを特定するルックアップテーブルを有する
ことを特徴とする液晶表示装置。
