Description
図1は、本技術の実施例1の液晶表示装置に適用される液晶表示パネルを部分的に示す断面図である。この実施例1の液晶表示装置は、例えば携帯電話等の携帯型情報機器に適用され、この液晶表示パネル1の背面にバックライト装置が配置される。この液晶表示パネル1は、1つの画素にそれぞれ透過表示部AR1と反射表示部AR2とを有する半透過型の液晶表示パネルであり、TFT基板2とCF基板3とによりネマチィック液晶による液晶層4を挟持する。
以上の構成において、この液晶表示パネル1は(図1〜図3)、透過表示部AR1において、バックライト装置の出射光が偏光板6を透過して直線偏光の入射光で入射し、この入射光が液晶層4、位相差板16を順次透過して偏光板14に入射する。また反射表示部AR2では、外来光が偏光板14を透過して所定偏光面の直線偏光により入射し、位相差板16、液晶層4を順次透過して共通電極9で反射し、液晶層4、位相差板16を順次透過して偏光板14に入射する。またこれらバックライト装置からの入射光、外来光の光路において、スリット形状による画素電極11及び共通電極9間の電圧の印加に応じた液晶層4への電界の印加に応じて、基板面内方向で液晶層4の液晶分子がスイッチングする。
以上の構成によれば、FFSモードによる半透過型の液晶表示装置に関して、透過表示部では正面方向に位相差が発生しない位相差板をCF基板の液晶層側に設けることにより、広い視野角特性を確保しつつ、簡易な構成で、FFS、IPSモード等による半透過型表示を実現することができる。またパネルの厚みを薄くすることができる。また透過表示部については、情報携帯機器に適用してTV並みの高画質を得ることが可能となる。
Claims (1)
- 第1の偏光板を有する第1の基板と第2の偏光板を有する第2の基板とで液晶層を挟持し、前記第1の基板に設けられた電極により基板面に平行な電界を前記液晶層に印加して前記液晶層の液晶分子を駆動する液晶表示装置において、
1つの画素に反射表示部と透過表示部とを有し、
前記第2の基板は、
前記液晶層側に、前記反射表示部と前記透過表示部とで厚さの異なるカラーフィルタを有し、
前記カラーフィルタの前記液晶層側に、ホメオトロピック配向によるポジティブCプレートと、前記透過表示部で正面方向に位相差が生じず、前記反射表示部では位相差が生じる位相差板とが順次設けられ、
前記第2の基板に形成されたオーバーコート層である前記ポジティブCプレートにより前記カラーフィルタによる段差が平坦化された液晶表示装置。
