Claims (9)
- 真空紫外〜可視光域の光を発光するガスが封入され少なくとも一部が透光性材料により形成された気密容器と、気密容器内へガスを励起させる電子を供給する電子源と、気密容器内において電子源に対向配置されたアノード電極と、気密容器の内面側に配置され励起されたガスの発光過程で放射される光からなる励起光によって励起され発光する蛍光体からなる蛍光体層と、電子源の駆動用電極間の電圧およびアノード電極と電子源との間の電圧を制御する制御装置とを備え、制御装置は、電子源から放出された直後の電子のエネルギ分布のピークエネルギが、ガスの励起エネルギよりも大きくガスのイオン化エネルギよりも小さくなるように電子源の駆動用電極間の電圧を制御することでガスを放電させずにガスを励起させることを特徴とする発光装置。
- 前記気密容器内の前記ガスの圧力が2kPa〜20kPaの範囲内であることを特徴とする請求項1記載の発光装置。
- 前記ガスが希ガスであり、前記気密容器内の前記ガスの圧力がエキシマの生成が可能な圧力であることを特徴とする請求項2記載の発光装置。
- 前記制御装置は、前記電子源から前記気密容器内に周期的に電子が供給されるように前記駆動用電極間へ矩形波電圧を印加させることを特徴とする請求項1ないし請求項3のいずれか1項に記載の発光装置。
- 前記制御装置は、前記矩形波電圧の1周期において前記電子源からの電子の供給を停止させるオフ期間を、前記電子源から電子を供給させるオン期間からオフ期間へ移行したときの前記ガスの残光時間よりも短く設定してあることを特徴とする請求項4記載の発光装置。
- 前記電子源は、下部電極と、下部電極に対向した表面電極と、下部電極と表面電極との間に介在しナノメータオーダの多数の半導体微結晶および各半導体微結晶それぞれの表面に形成され半導体微結晶の結晶粒径よりも小さな膜厚の多数の絶縁膜を有する強電界ドリフト層とを備えた弾道電子面放出型電子源からなり、下部電極と表面電極とがそれぞれ前記駆動用電極を構成し、前記制御装置は、前記矩形波電圧を交流電圧とすることを特徴とする請求項4または請求項5記載の発光装置。
- 前記制御装置は、前記駆動用電極に印加する矩形波電圧である第1の矩形波電圧に同期する第2の矩形波電圧を前記アノード電極と前記電子源との間に印加させることを特徴とする請求項4ないし請求項6のいずれか1項に記載の発光装置。
- 前記制御装置は、前記第2の矩形波電圧を前記アノード電極の電位が前記電子源よりも高電位であり且つ前記オン期間よりも前記オフ期間の方が低い電位となるように設定してあることを特徴とする請求項7記載の発光装置。
- 前記電子源と前記アノード電極との間隔をパッシェンミニマムよりも大きくしてあることを特徴とする請求項1ないし請求項8のいずれか1項に記載の発光装置。
