1画素内に透過部と反射部とを有し、前記透過部と前記反射部とを独立に電圧印加する液晶表示層と、前記液晶表示層を背面から照射する光源と、前記液晶表示層と前記光源との間に配置され、印加電圧により、反射状態と透過状態とを切り替える反射制御素子とを備えた液晶表示素子において、
前記反射制御素子を透過状態とし、前記液晶表示層の反射部を暗状態とし、前記透過部にて画像表示を行う透過表示モードと、
前記反射制御素子を透過状態とし、前記液晶表示層の反射部及び透過部にて画像表示を行う反射・透過併用表示モードと、
前記反射制御素子を反射状態とし、前記液晶表示層の反射部及び透過部にて画像表示を行う反射表示モードとのいずれか1つのモードに切り替えることを特徴とする。

Claims (17)
- 1画素内に透過部と反射部とを有し、前記透過部と前記反射部とを独立に電圧印加する液晶表示層と、前記液晶表示層を背面から照射する光源と、前記液晶表示層と前記光源との間に配置され、印加電圧により、反射状態と透過状態とを切り替える反射制御素子とを備えた液晶表示素子において、
前記反射制御素子を透過状態とし、前記液晶表示層の反射部を暗状態とし、前記透過部にて画像表示を行う透過表示モードと、
前記反射制御素子を透過状態とし、前記液晶表示層の反射部及び透過部にて画像表示を行う反射・透過併用表示モードと、
前記反射制御素子を反射状態とし、前記液晶表示層の反射部及び透過部にて画像表示を行う反射表示モードとのいずれか1つのモードに切り替えることを特徴とする液晶表示素子。 - 請求項1に記載の液晶表示素子において、
前記反射制御素子は、特定の波長帯域をブラッグ反射させる反射層を有し、前記印加電圧によって前記反射層の反射率を制御することを特徴とする液晶表示素子。 - 請求項1または請求項2に記載の液晶表示素子において、
前記反射制御素子は、
特定の波長帯域をブラッグ反射させる反射層と、
前記反射層の位相を制御する位相制御層とから構成され、前記印加電圧によって前記反射層の反射率を制御し、前記光源上に前記反射層、前記位相制御層の順に積層することを特徴とする液晶表示素子。 - 請求項2または請求項3に記載の液晶表示素子において、

前記反射制御素子は、前記液晶表示層と前記光源とが積層する方向に積層した複数の前記反射層を有することを特徴とする液晶表示素子。 - 請求項2乃至5のいずれか1項に記載の液晶表示素子において、
前記反射制御素子は、前記液晶表示層と前記光源とが積層する方向と直交した方向に並列に配置された複数の前記反射層を有することを特徴とする液晶表示素子。 - 請求項1乃至7のいずれか1項に記載の液晶表示素子において、
前記反射制御素子は、液晶を含む層を有することを特徴とする液晶表示素子。 - 請求項2または請求項3に記載の液晶表示素子において、
前記印加電圧によって反射率を制御される反射層は、コレステリック液晶を含むことを特徴とする液晶表示素子。 - 請求項2または請求項3に記載の液晶表示素子において、
前記印加電圧によって反射率を制御される反射層は、液晶の液滴を含む液晶液滴層と、少なくとも1つの高分子層とが交互に積層した構造であることを特徴とする液晶表示素子。 - 請求項2または請求項3に記載の液晶表示素子において、
前記印加電圧によって反射率を制御される反射層は、コレステリック液晶の液滴を含む高分子層から構成されることを特徴とする液晶表示素子。 - 請求項1乃至11のいずれか1項に記載の液晶表示素子において、
前記反射制御素子の一部に突出及び/または、切り込みを形成することを特徴とする液晶表示素子。 - 請求項1乃至12のいずれか1項に記載の液晶表示素子において、
前記反射制御素子と前記液晶表示層とを光学密着することを特徴とする液晶表示素子。 - 請求項1乃至13のいずれか1項に記載の液晶表示素子において、
前記印加電圧を供給する端子が、前記反射制御素子の1辺から延伸していることを特徴とする液晶表示素子。 - 請求項1乃至14のいずれか1項に記載の液晶表示素子において、
前記液晶表示素子に照射される外光量を感知するセンサーを備え、前記センサーによって感知された外光量に応じて、前記液晶表示層の反射部と透過部とのそれぞれを画像表示に利用し、前記反射制御素子の反射率と、前記光源の照射量とを連動させて、表示モードの切り替えを行うことを特徴とする液晶表示素子。 - 請求項1乃至14のいずれか1項に記載の液晶表示素子を搭載し、該液晶表示素子に照射される外光量を感知するセンサーを備え、前記センサーによって感知された外光量に応じて、前記液晶表示層の反射部と透過部とのそれぞれを画像表示に利用し、前記反射制御素子の反射率と、前記光源の照射量とを連動させて、表示モードの切り替えを行う電子機器。
- 請求項1乃至15のいずれか1項に記載の液晶表示素子を搭載した電子機器。
