Description
との間には、m番目の発光層におけるイオン化ポテンシャルよりも大きいイオン化ポテンシャルを有すると共に、前記m+1番目の発光層における電子親和力よりも小さい電子親和力を有する層が設けられている。このような構成を有する本発明の発光装置では、複数の発光素子からの発光を組み合わせて像を映し出す。

て説明する。この場合、発光素子は、次の様に動作する。第1の電極101の電位が第2の電極102の電位よりも高い電位となるように、第1の電極101と第2の電極102に電圧を印加すると、第1の電極101側から第1の層121の方へ正孔が注入され、第2の電極102側から第1の層121の方へ電子が注入される。そして、第1の層121、第1の発光層111a、および第2の発光層111bの中の少なくとも一層において、電子と正孔とが再結合し、励起エネルギーが生じる。このようにして生じた励起エネルギーによって第1の発光層111aおよび第2の発光層111bに含まれた発光物質は励起し、その後基底状態に戻るときに発光する。このような第1の層121において、第1の層121は、第1の発光層111aにおけるイオン化ポテンシャルよりも大きいイオン化ポテンシャルを有すると共に、第2の発光層111bにおけるLUMO準位よりも大きいLUMO準位を有する層であることが好ましい。また、第1の層121の厚さは1nm〜30nmとなるように形成されていることが好ましい。このような第1の発光層111aと第2の発光層111bとの間に第1の層121を設けることによって、第1の発光層111a若しくは第2の発光層111bのいずれか一方にのみ励起エネルギーが偏ってしてしまうことを阻止することができる。
,8,12,13,17,18−オクタエチル−21H,23H−ポルフィリナト)白金(II)等の燐光を発光する物質も赤色系の発光を呈する発光物質として用いることができる。なお、第1の発光層111aと第2の発光層111bとに含まれる発光物質は、同一であってもよいし異なっていてもよい。発光物質と共に第1の発光層111a若しくは第2の発光層111bに含まれ、発光物質を分散状態にするために用いられる物質について特に限定はなく、発光物質として用いる物質のエネルギーギャップ等を勘案して適宜選択すればよい。例えば、9,10−ジ(2−ナフチル)−2−tert−ブチルアントラセン(略称:t−BuDNA)等のアントラセン誘導体、または4,4'−ビス(N−カルバゾリル)ビフェニル(略称:CBP)等のカルバゾール誘導体、2,3−ビス(4−ジフェニルアミノフェニル)キノキサリン(略称:TPAQn)、2,3−ビス{4−[N−(1−ナフチル)−N−フェニルアミノ]フェニル}−ジベンゾ[f,h]キノキサリン(略称:NPADiBzQn)等のキノキサリン誘導体の他、ビス[2−(2−ヒドロキシフェニル)ピリジナト]亜鉛(略称:Znpp2)、ビス[2−(2−ヒドロキシ
フェニル)ベンゾオキサゾラト]亜鉛(略称:ZnBOX)等の金属錯体等を発光物質と共に用いることができる。
成することが好ましい。なお、正孔輸送性の高い物質とは、電子よりも正孔の移動度が高く、電子の移動度に対する正孔の移動度の比の値(=正孔移動度/電子移動度)が100よりも大きい物質をいう。正孔輸送層122を形成するのに用いることができる物質の具体例としては、4,4'−ビス[N−(1−ナフチル)−N−フェニルアミノ]ビフェニル(略称:NPB)、4,4'−ビス[N−(3−メチルフェニル)−N−フェニルアミノ]ビフェニル(略称:TPD)、4,4',4''−トリス(N,N−ジフェニルアミノ)トリフェニルアミン(略称:TDATA)、4,4',4''−トリス[N−(3−メチルフェニル)−N−フェニルアミノ]トリフェニルアミン(略称:MTDATA)、4,4'−ビス{N−[4−(N,N−ジ−m−トリルアミノ)フェニル]−N−フェニルアミノ}ビフェニル(略称:DNTPD)、1,3,5−トリス[N,N−ジ(m−トリル)アミノ]ベンゼン(略称:m−MTDAB)、4,4',4''−トリス(N−カルバゾリル)トリフェニルアミン(略称:TCTA)、フタロシアニン(略称:H2Pc
)、銅フタロシアニン(略称:CuPc)、バナジルフタロシアニン(略称:VOPc)等が挙げられる。また、正孔輸送層122は、以上に述べた物質から成る層を二以上組み合わせて形成した多層構造の層であってもよい。
リ(エチレンジオキシチオフェン)/ポリ(スチレンスルホン酸)水溶液(PEDOT/PSS)等の高分子等が挙げられる。つまり、正孔注入層におけるイオン化ポテンシャルが正孔輸送層122におけるイオン化ポテンシャルよりも相対的に小さくなるような物質を選択することによって、正孔注入層を形成することができる。なお、正孔注入層を設ける場合、第1の電極101は、インジウム錫酸化物等の仕事関数の高い物質を用いて形成することが好ましい。

ル−8−キノリノラト)−4−フェニルフェノラト−アルミニウム(略称:BAlq)、ビス[2−(2−ヒドロキシフェニル)ベンゾオキサゾラト]亜鉛(略称:Zn(BOX)2)、ビス[2−(2−ヒドロキシフェニル)ベンゾチアゾラト]亜鉛(略称:Zn(
BTZ)2)等の金属錯体の他、2−(4−ビフェニリル)−5−(4−tert−ブチ
ルフェニル)−1,3,4−オキサジアゾール(略称:PBD)、1,3−ビス[5−(p−tert−ブチルフェニル)−1,3,4−オキサジアゾール−2−イル]ベンゼン(略称:OXD−7)、3−(4−tert−ブチルフェニル)−4−フェニル−5−(4−ビフェニリル)−1,2,4−トリアゾール(略称:TAZ)、3−(4−tert−ブチルフェニル)−4−(4−エチルフェニル)−5−(4−ビフェニリル)−1,2,4−トリアゾール(略称:p−EtTAZ)、バソフェナントロリン(略称:BPhen)、バソキュプロイン(略称:BCP)、4,4−ビス(5−メチルベンズオキサゾル−2−イル)スチルベン(略称:BzOs)等が挙げられる。また、電子輸送層123は、以上に述べた物質から成る層を二以上組み合わせて形成した多層構造の層であってもよい。

説明する。この場合、発光素子は、次の様に動作する。第1の電極101の電位が第2の電極102の電位よりも高い電位となるように、第1の電極101と第2の電極102に電圧を印加すると、第1の電極101側から第1の層121の方へ正孔が注入され、第2の電極102側から第1の層121の方へ電子が注入される。また、第1の層121から第1の電極101の方へは電子が流れ、第1の層121から第2の電極102の方へは正孔が流れる。第1の発光層111aと第2の発光層111bのそれぞれの層では、電子と正孔が再結合し、励起エネルギーが生じる。生じた励起エネルギーによって発光物質は励起状態となり、その後基底状態に戻るときに発光する。
、カルシウム酸化物(CaO)、ナトリウム酸化物(Na2O)、カリウム酸化物(K2O)、マグネシウム酸化物(MgO)、フッ化リチウム(LiF)、フッ化セシウム(CsF)、フッ化カルシウム(CaF2)等から選ばれる少なくとも一の物質も電子供与性を
示す物質として用いることができる。以上のような構成の第1の層121bは電子を発生することができる。
に記載した正孔輸送層121に関する記載を準用する。
nmから550nmに発光スペクトルのピークを有する発光を呈する物質を発光物質が含まれている。これらのような蛍光を発光する物質の他、トリス(2−フェニルピリジナト)イリジウム(III)、(アセチルアセトナト)ビス(2−フェニルピリジナト)イリジウム(III)のような燐光を発光する物質を発光物質として用いても構わない。
本発明の発光装置は、図1(A)〜(C)で表されるような全ての発光素子が、一対の電極間に複数の発光層を有するもので形成されている態様に限定されるものではない。例えば図2(A)〜(C)に示すように、緑色系の発光のように人間の眼に対する感度の高い発光色を呈する第2の発光素子については、赤色系あるいは青色系の発光を呈する発光素子よりも一対の電極間に含まれる発光層の数を少なくなるように構成されていてもよい。このように、任意の電流を流したときに得られる輝度の大きさがそれぞれ異なる発光素子からの発光を組み合わせて像を表示するときに、人間の眼に対する感度の低い発光色を呈する発光素子と、人間の眼に対する感度の高い発光色を呈する発光素子とで一対の電極間に設ける発光層の数を異ならせることで、より効率的に各色の輝度の調和をとることができる。

本発明の発光装置では、実施の形態1で説明したように、第1の発光層と第2の発光層とに含まれている発光物質からの発光が同系色の発光であってもよいし、または、第1の発光層と第2の発光層とに含まれている発光物質からの発光が異なる発光色の発光であってもよい。このように、第1の発光層と第2の発光層とに含まれている発光物質からの発光が異なる発光色の発光である発光素子の態様について図3を用いて説明する。
、(2,3,7,8,12,13,17,18−オクタエチル−21H,23H−ポルフィリナト)白金(II)等の燐光を発光する物質が赤色系の発光を呈する発光物質として含まれていてもよい。

4−フェニルフェノラト)ガリウム(略称:BGaq)、3,6,11,14−テトラキス(ジフェニルアミノ)ジベンゾ[g,p]クリセン等の青緑色系の発光を呈する物質が発光物質として含まれている。これらのような蛍光を発光する物質の他、ビス{2−[3,5−ビス(トリフルオロメチル)フェニル]ピリジナト}(ピコリナト)イリジウム(III)のような燐光を発光する物質も発光物質として用いることができる。
422が設けられていてもよい。また、第2の発光層412bと第2の電極402との間には、図3に示すように、電子輸送層423が設けられていてもよい。なお、正孔輸送層422、電子輸送層423については、それぞれ正孔輸送層122、電子輸送層123に関する記載を準用する。
実施の形態3では、一対の電極間に異なる発光色を呈する発光層を二層含む発光素子の態様について記載したが、電極間に含まれる発光層の数は、例えば三層であってもよい。
設けられていてもよい。また、第3の発光層513と第2の電極502との間には、図4のように電子輸送層523が設けられていてもよい。なお、正孔輸送層522、電子輸送層523については、それぞれ正孔輸送層122、電子輸送層123に関する記載を準用する。
本発明の発光装置の一態様について、図5を用いて説明する。本発明の発光装置には、第1の発光素子601の他、第2の発光素子602と、第3の発光素子603と、第4の発光素子604とが設けられている。これらの発光素子は何れも一対の電極間に発光層が設けられて成るものである。第2の発光素子、第3の発光素子、および第4の発光素子の3つの素子は、いずれか一が赤色系、いずれか一が緑色系、いずれか一が青色系の発光を示す。ここでは一例として、第2の発光素子が赤色系、第3の発光素子が緑色系、第4の発光素子が青色系の発光を示す場合を例示するが、その順序は限定されることはない。また、第2の発光素子602と第3の発光素子603と第4の発光素子604のそれぞれは、第1の発光素子と隣り合うように配置されている。具体的には、図5に示すように配置されている。
2の辺側には第3の発光素子603が設けられている。また、第1の発光素子601の第3の辺側には第4の発光素子604が設けられている。
第1の電極614と第3の発光層624との間には、正孔発生層が設けられていてもよい。また、電子発生層631および/または635と第2の電極615との間にも、正孔発生層が設けられていてもよい。
本発明の発光装置には、実施の形態1〜実施の形態5に記載したそれぞれの発光素子の他、発光素子の駆動を制御する為の回路が設けられていてもよい。
図10は発光装置7001と、回路基板7002とを組み合わせたモジュールを示している。回路基板7002には、例えば、コントロール回路7003や信号分割回路7004などが設けられている。発光装置7001は実施の形態1から実施の形態5に記載した少なくとも一の発光素子を含み、実施の形態6で説明したように封止されたものである。
Claims (5)
- 第1乃至第4の発光素子を有する画素を有し、
前記第2の発光素子は、第1の電極と第2の電極を有し、かつ、前記第1の電極と前記第2の電極との間に、第1の発光層と、第1の電子発生層とを有し、
前記第3の発光素子は、第3の電極と第4の電極を有し、かつ、前記第3の電極と前記第4の電極との間に、第1の正孔発生層と、第2の発光層と、第2の電子発生層と、第2の正孔発生層とを有し、
前記第4の発光素子は、第5の電極と第6の電極を有し、かつ、前記第5の電極と前記第6の電極との間に、第3の発光層と、第3の電子発生層とを有し、
前記第1の発光素子は、第7の電極と第8の電極を有し、前記第7の電極と前記第8の電極との間に、前記第1の発光層と、前記第1の電子発生層と、前記第1の正孔発生層と、前記第2の発光層と、前記第2の電子発生層と、前記第2の正孔発生層と、前記第3の発光層と、前記第3の電子発生層とを有し、
前記第1の発光素子は、第1の色を発光し、前記第2の発光素子は、第2の色を発光し、前記第3の発光素子は、第3の色を発光し、前記第4の発光素子は、第4の色を発光することを特徴とする発光装置。 - 請求項1において、
前記第1の発光素子乃至第4の発光素子は、それぞれ四角形で表され、
前記第1の発光素子の第1の辺側に、前記第2の発光素子が設けられ、
前記第1の発光素子の第2の辺側に、前記第3の発光素子が設けられ、

前記第1の発光素子乃至前記第4の発光素子において、各発光素子間に設けられた隔壁層を有していることを特徴とする発光装置。 - 請求項1乃至請求項3のいずれか一において、
前記第2の発光素子乃至前記第4の発光素子の3つの素子は、いずれか一が赤色系、いずれか一が緑色系、いずれか一が青色系の発光を示すことを特徴とする発光装置。 - 請求項1乃至請求項4のいずれか一において、
前記第1の発光素子は、白色の発光を示すことを特徴とする発光装置。
