Description
アルミナを90〜98質量%、希土類酸化物を0.2〜4質量%、残部に焼結助剤に含まれる金属と同じ金属の酸化物を含み、
粒界中の非ガラス質物の平均粒径が5μm以下でかつ最大粒径2〜10μmであることを特徴とする。なお、前記質量%はアルミナ、希土類酸化物および残部の合計を100質量%とする場合の割合を示す。
前記スパークプラグ用アルミナ基焼結体の略円筒体内に中心電極を組み付ける中心電極組付工程と、
前記スパークプラグ用アルミナ基焼結体を主体金具に取付ける主体金具取付工程とを有することを特徴とする、請求項5に記載のスパークプラグの製造方法である。
平均粒径が0.2〜5μmでかつ最大粒径が10μm以下の非ガラス質物を粒界中に含んでいると緻密で機械的強度が大きくなる理由は以下の通りである。
一般に、焼結に際して焼結用原料混合物に十分な熱量を加えると、非ガラス質物が生成する。加える熱量を抑制することにより非ガラス質物の殆ど存在しない焼結体を作製することもできるが、熱量を抑制し過ぎると、アルミナの粒成長が促進されないので、焼結体が緻密化せずに結果として強度が向上しないことがある。よって、非ガラス質物が殆ど存在しない緻密な焼結体を作製するには、熱量の正確な調整例えば焼成温度を±5℃に温度調整をすることが必要となるので焼結体の生産性が低下する。
この発明に係るスパークプラグ用アルミナ基焼結体の好適な態様においては、その粒界中の非ガラス質物の平均粒径が0.2〜5μmで、かつ、最大粒径が10μm以下である。非ガラス質物の平均粒径及び最大粒径が上記数値範囲を満たすスパークプラグ用アルミナ基焼結体は、焼成時における微妙かつ正確な温度調整をすることなく製造されることができる。したがって、前記スパークプラグ用アルミナ基焼結体の製造は一定の生産性を維持することができる。しかも、このようにして得られたスパークプラグ用アルミナ基焼結体は、緻密で機械的強度が大きい。このようなスパークプラグ用アルミナ基焼結体は、一例として後述の実施例に示す原料から製造されることができるが、その実施例のみに限定されることは無い。
図4はこの発明の一実施態様であるスパークプラグ1の全体を示すと共に一部を断面にて示した説明図であり、図5はこの発明の一実施態様であるスパークプラグ1の主要部分をその断面にて示す説明図である。なお、図4及び5では、軸線XYのX側をスパークプラグ1の先端方向、Y側をスパークプラグ1の後端方向として説明する。
また、少なくともマグネシウム成分を含んでいる非ガラス質物を有するスパークプラグ用アルミナ基焼結体を製造する場合には、少なくともマグネシウム化合物例えば酸化マグネシウムを含有し、平均粒径が0.5≦D50≦2μmである焼結助剤を使用するのが、好ましい。
前記スパークプラグ用アルミナ基焼結体の略円筒体内に中心電極を組み付ける中心電極組付工程と、
前記スパークプラグ用アルミナ基焼結体を主体金具に取付ける主体金具取付工程とを有する。
前記未焼成焼結体は、アルミナ、希土類酸化物及び焼結助剤の含有量が合計で100質量%となるように、アルミナを90〜98質量%と、希土類酸化物を0.2〜4質量%と、残部として平均粒径が0.5μm≦D50≦2μmである焼結助剤とを含有し、又はアルミナ、希土類酸化物及び焼結助剤の含有量が合計で100質量%となるように、アルミナを90〜98質量%と、平均粒径が0.5μm≦D50≦2μmである希土類酸化物を0.2〜4質量%と、残部として、少なくともマグネシウム化合物特に酸化マグネシウムを含有し、かつ平均粒径が0.5μm≦D50≦2μmである焼結助剤とを含有する。
以下に、この発明に係るスパークプラグの製造方法の一例を、図4に示すスパークプラグ1の部材に付した番号を用いて説明することとする。示す。なお、この発明のスパークプラグの製造方法における焼成工程は、この発明に係るスパークプラグ用アルミナ基焼結体の製造方法と同様であるので、説明を省略する。

Claims (8)
- アルミナと、希土類酸化物と、焼結助剤に含まれる金属と同じ金属の酸化物とを含むスパークプラグ用アルミナ基焼結体において、
アルミナ、希土類酸化物及び焼結助剤に含まれる金属と同じ金属の酸化物の含有量が合計で100質量%となるように、アルミナを90〜98質量%、希土類酸化物を0.2〜4質量%、残部に焼結助剤に含まれる金属と同じ金属の酸化物を含み、
粒界中の非ガラス質物の平均粒径が5μm以下でかつ最大粒径2〜10μmであることを特徴とするスパークプラグ用アルミナ基焼結体。 - 前記粒界中の非ガラス質物の平均粒径が0.2〜5μmであることを特徴とする請求項1に記載のスパークプラグ用アルミナ基焼結体。
- 前記非ガラス質物が、少なくともマグネシウム成分を含むことを特徴とする請求項1又は2に記載のスパークプラグ用アルミナ基焼結体。
- 前記希土類酸化物がランタノイド元素の酸化物であり、焼結助剤に含まれる金属と同じ金属の酸化物がケイ素、カルシウム、マグネシウム及びバリウムよりなる群から選択される少なくとも一種である金属の酸化物である前記請求項1〜3のいずれか一項に記載のスパークプラグ用アルミナ基焼結体。
- 円筒体に形成された前記請求項1〜4のいずれか一項に記載のスパークプラグ用アルミナ基焼結体と、前記円筒体内に組み付けられた中心電極と、前記スパークプラグ用アルミナ基焼結体を取り付けた円筒状の主体金具とを有することを特徴とするスパークプラグ。
- 請求項2に記載のスパークプラグ用アルミナ基焼結体を製造する方法であって、
アルミナ、希土類酸化物及び焼結助剤の含有量が合計で100質量%となるように、アルミナを90〜98質量%と、希土類酸化物を0.2〜4質量%と、残部として平均粒径が0.5μm≦D50≦2μmである焼結助剤とを含有する未焼成成形体を焼結することを特徴とするスパークプラグ用アルミナ基焼結体の製造方法。 - 請求項3に記載のスパークプラグ用アルミナ基焼結体を製造する方法であって、
アルミナ、希土類酸化物及び焼結助剤の含有量が合計で100質量%となるように、アルミナを90〜98質量%と、平均粒径が0.5μm≦D50≦2μmである希土類酸化物を0.2〜4質量%と、残部として、少なくともマグネシウム化合物を含有し、かつ平均粒径が0.5μm≦D50≦2μmである焼結助剤とを含有する未焼成成形体を焼結することを特徴とするスパークプラグ用アルミナ基焼結体の製造方法。 - 請求項6又は請求項7に記載の未焼成成形体を焼結して略円筒体のスパークプラグ用アルミナ基焼結体を形成する焼成工程と、
前記スパークプラグ用アルミナ基焼結体の略円筒体内に中心電極を組み付ける中心電極組付工程と、
前記スパークプラグ用アルミナ基焼結体を主体金具に取付ける主体金具取付工程とを有することを特徴とする、請求項5に記載のスパークプラグの製造方法。
