タルク(5815-049)を用いたPUP1の調製
ポリエーテルジオール(462.6g、MW 2,000、Ashlandコード033-192、Ashland Chemical、Dublin、OH)を2リットルの三口丸底反応フラスコに仕込み100℃に加熱した。連続的に機械攪拌しながら、タルク(488.6g)を徐々に反応フラスコに加えた。タルクの添加が完了したら、30分間真空(1.5〜2.0cmHg)にし、反応フラスコ内容物の含水率を<0.01重量%に低下させた。
タルク(6680-34)を用いないPUP2の調製
ポリエーテルジオール(590.75g、MW 2,000、Ashlandコード033-192、Ashland Chemical、Dublin、OH)、Mondur MRS ポリイソシアナート(994.0g)およびD-1400消泡剤(1.60g)を、継続的に機械攪拌しながら、周囲温度で、窒素雰囲気生成装置を用いて、2-リットルの三ッ口丸底反応フラスコ中に仕込んだ。T-12触媒(1.62g)を反応混合物に加えたところ、穏やかな発熱が認められた。約30〜40分間後にT-12触媒(1.6g)の第2の分割量を加え、40〜45℃の最高発熱が認められた。反応をさらに1時間進行させた後、モノフェニル-ジクロロホスファート(4.0g)を反応混合物に加え、さらに10分間攪拌して、生成物を反応フラスコから取り出した。
水性エマルジョンポリマーの調製
種々の市販の水性エマルジョンポリマーを評価した。これらには、以下に示す消費者用および工業用の塗料、ラテックスおよびエマルジョンを含めた。
1.Rhoplex TR-520はRohm and Haas社のアクリルベースのアニオン性エマルジョンで、Tg=-6℃、NV(非揮発性固体)=51%、pH=3およびブルックフィールド(Brookfield)粘度が25℃で<100cpsのものである。
2.Rhoplex N-619はRohm and Haas社のアクリルベースのアニオン性エマルジョンで、Tg=-28℃、NV=57%、pH=7.8およびブルックフィールド粘度が25℃で50〜200cpsのものである。
3.Arolone(登録商標)870-W-51はReichhold社のスチレンブタジエンエマルジョンで、Tg=2℃、NV=51%、pH=8〜9およびブルックフィールド粘度が25℃で<500cpsのものである。
4.Aquathane(登録商標)AD 97950-00はReichhold社のポリウレタンイオノマーの水性ディスパージョンで、MP=105〜115℃、NV=44〜46%、pH=6.5〜8.5およびブルックフィールド粘度が25℃で<1000cpsのものである。
5.Carbobond(商標)26373はBF Goodrich社のアクリル系ポリマーエマルジョンで、NV=56〜59%、pH=3.2〜4.2およびブルックフィールド粘度が25℃で<1000cpsのものである。
6.Hycar(登録商標)26091はBF Goodrich社のカルボキシル化アクリルラテックスで、Tg=20℃、NV=50%、pH=6.8、ブルックフィールド粘度が25℃で35cpsのものである。
7.Airflexe(登録商標)7200はAir Products社のポリ酢酸ビニル-エチレンコポリマーエマルジョンで、Tg=0℃、NV=73%、pH=4.0〜5.5およびブルックフィールド粘度が25℃で1500〜3000cpsのものである。
8.Vinac XX-210はAir Products社のポリ酢酸ビニルホモポリマーで、Tg=35℃、NV=55%、pH=4.5〜6.0およびブルックフィールド粘度が25℃で1000〜1400cpsのものである。
9.Vinac XX-230はAir Products社のポリ酢酸ビニルホモポリマーで、Tg=35℃、NV=55%、pH=4.5〜6.0およびブルックフィールド粘度が25℃で2000〜2600cpsのものである。
10.Vinac XX-240はAir Products社のポリ酢酸ビニルホモポリマーで、Tg=35℃、NV=55%、pH=4.5〜6.0およびブルックフィールド粘度が25℃で2900〜3700cpsのものである。
11.ISOSET(登録商標)1000はAshland Chemical社の自己架橋性ポリ酢酸ビニルコポリマーで、Tg=5℃、NV=47〜49%、pH=2.5〜4.0およびブルックフィールド粘度が25℃で4000〜6000cpsのものである。
12.フラットアクリル系家庭用塗料はThe Valspar Corporation社製造の消費者用塗料(CAS No.7732-18-5;Ti02含有のアクリル系コポリマーラテックス、エチレングリコール、タルクおよびシリカ)である。
13.TB-IIはFranklin International社の消費者用木材接着剤、ポリ酢酸ビニルエマルジョン接着剤である。
14.フラットウォール塗料はSherwin Williams社製造の消費者用塗料(品番:W36A750;充填材、水およびエチレングリコールを有するビニルポリマーラテックス)である。
15.木材エクステリアプライマーはSherwin Williams社製造の消費者用木材プライマー(品番W45702 O/M;充填材とミネラルスピリット中のTiO2を含有するトール油アルキドポリマー)である。
水噴霧を伴うおよび伴わない場合の接着剤性能
実施例1のPUP1を用いて、高密度(比重(specific gravity)、sp.gr.、0.57〜0.59g/cm3)ベイマツ(Douglas fir)でASTM D-5751試験を行った。以下の結果が得られた。
噴霧を行った場合の接着剤性能の時間の検討
木材噴霧の後の異なった時間での接着剤塗布について、真空-圧力および2サイクル煮沸ASTM D-5751試験を行った。噴霧する水の量は5インチ×12インチ(13cm×30cm)ボード当たり約2グラムとした。得られた結果を以下と、図1(真空-圧力)および2(煮沸)に示す。
噴霧を伴う場合の接着剤性能の時間の検討
この検討では、接着剤PUP1を異なる含水率の木材に、水噴霧の3分後と水噴霧の23分後に塗布した。この実験は、「真空」条件が接着浸透を誘発して、高い木材破損をもたらすかどうかを見るために、簡単な要因計画に基づいた。ここでも、真空-圧力および2サイクル煮沸ASTM D-5751試験を行い、以下の結果が得られた。これらの結果は、真空-圧力についての図3(3分は線10であり、23分は線12)および煮沸試験についての図4(3分は線14であり、23分は線16)にも示されている。
2成分型ポリウレタン接着剤の調製
実施例2のPUP2を実施例3の水性エマルジョンポリマー(AEP)と混合して、種々の2成分型ポリウレタン接着剤を調製した。種々の接着剤のpot-livesは、混合比、選択した触媒、触媒濃度に応じて、約2〜30分間の範囲で変化した。一般に、混合物中のPUP2濃度が増加するにしたがって、混合物のpot-livesも増加した。接着剤の所要硬化時間は、温度によるが、30分間〜4時間の範囲であった。以下の表7に示したデータは、単板積層材(LVL)について、330°F(166℃)で30秒間硬化させた重量比が4:1のPUP2:AEPに基づいている。硬化したLVLフィンガージョイントを、硬化に続いて室温で放置した後、30分間と24時間で試験を行った。
フィンガージョイント強度の進行
本発明の接着剤の調合物の強度の進行を実証するために、PUP2をVinac XX-230(Air Products Company)に4:1の重量比で混合して、ブラックスプルースのフィンガージョイント(2インチ×4インチ)に塗布し、周囲温度で硬化させ、その後、異なる時間で張力を試験した。得られた結果を以下に示す。
フィンガージョイント強度の進行
異なる触媒(銘柄T-12、ジブチルすずジラウレート)濃度での強度の進行を実証するために、PUP2をより高い濃度のT-12に加え、4:1の重量比でISOSET1000と混合した。混合された接着剤をブラックスプルースパインのフィンガージョイント(2インチ×4インチ)に塗布して周囲温度で硬化させ、塗布と硬化に続く異なった時間での張力を試験した。得られた結果を表9に示す。
ASTM D-5751の結果
本発明の接着剤が、構造用特性の加工木材用途の適格性を有し得るかどうかを判定するために、実施例2のPUP2を実施例3からのAEPと90/10と80/20の混合比で混合し、ASTM D-5751試験のために、異なる木材種に塗布した。以下の結果が得られた。
ASTM D-2559結果
エクステリア構造用加工木材用途のための接着剤の適格性を有するために、必要とされる試験の1つは、ASTM D-2559試験において層間剥離(5%またはそれ以下)の程度が小さいことである。したがって、ベイマツ(0.50の比重、12%の含水率、表12)およびブラックスプルース(0.44〜0.48の比重、10〜11%の含水率、表13)について試験を実施した。以下の結果が得られた。

Claims (12)
- (i)接合される木材製品表面に水を噴霧するステップと、
(ii)水性接着剤組成物を、前記水を噴霧された木材製品表面に塗布するステップと、
(iii)前記水性接着剤組成物を硬化させるステップと
を含む、水性接着剤をそれに塗布することによって、10重量%未満の含水率を有する木材製品の2つの表面を互いに接合させる方法であって、
前記水性接着剤組成物が、
(a)ポリイソシアナートとアルコールとを反応させることによって形成されるイソシアナート官能性プレポリマーであって、ポリイソシアナートからのイソシアナート当量がアルコールからのヒドロキシル当量を超えるプレポリマーと、
(b)水性ポリマーエマルジョンとを、95/5〜60/40の範囲の(a)と(b)との重量比で含む、接合方法。 - 前記噴霧後5分間以内に、前記噴霧された木材製品表面に前記水性接着剤組成物を塗布する請求項1に記載の接合方法。
- 前記表面に、飽和するまで噴霧を施す請求項1又は2に記載の接合方法。
- 前記接着剤が熱もしくは高周波(RF)硬化によって硬化されている請求項1〜3のいずれか一項に記載の接合方法。
- 前記アルコールが、活性アルコール基を含有するアクリレート、エステル、ビニル、ヒマシ油またはポリマーのうちの1つまたは複数から選択される請求項1〜4のいずれか一項に記載の接合方法。
- 前記アルコールが、アルキル化されているか又はアルキル化されていない脂肪族および芳香族のポリエーテルポリオール、またはカプロラクトン-ベースのポリオールのうちの1つまたは複数から選択される請求項5に記載の接合方法。
- 前記アルコールが、300〜3,000の範囲の分子量のブロックポリエチレンまたはポリプロピレンオキサイドホモポリマーもしくはコポリマーである請求項6に記載の接合方法。
- 前記イソシアナート官能性プレポリマーを、ヘキサメチレンジイソシアナート、トルエンジイソシアナート(TDI)、ジフェニルメタンジイソシアナート(MDI)、m-およびp-フェニレンジイソシアナート、ビトリレンジイソシアナート、シクロヘキサンジイソシアナート(CHDI)、ビス-(イソシアナートメチル)シクロヘキサン(H6XDI)、ジシクロヘキシルメタンジイソシアナート(H12MDI)、ダイマー酸ジイソシアナート(DDI)、トリメチルヘキサメチレンジイソシアナート、リシンジイソシアナートおよびそのメチルエステル、イソホロンジイソシアナート、メチルシクロヘキサンジイソシアナート、1,5-ナフタレンジイソシアナート、キシリレンジイソシアナートおよびキシレンジイソシアナートとそのメチル誘導体、ポリメチレンポリフェニルイソシアナート、クロロフェニレン-2,4-ジイソシアナート、ポリフェニレンジイソシアナート、イソホロンジイソシアナート(IPDI)、水素化メチレンジフェニルイソシアナート(HMDI)、テトラメチルキシレンジイソシアナート(TMXDI)、ヘキサメチレンジイソシアナート(HDI)、またはこれらのオリゴマー、ならびにこれらの混合物から選択されるイソシアナート成分から作製する請求項1〜7のいずれか一項に記載の接合方法。

- 前記イソシアナート官能性プレポリマーと前記水性ポリマーエマルジョンとの重量比が90/10〜70/30の範囲である請求項1〜9のいずれか一項に記載の接合方法。
- 前記水性ポリマーエマルジョンが、アクリルエマルジョン、ビニルエマルジョン、スチレン-ブタジエンポリマーエマルジョンラテックス、ポリビニルアルコールエマルジョン、ポリウレタンディスパージョン、ポリ酢酸ビニル-エチレンコポリマーエマルジョンまたはカルボキシル化アクリルラテックスのうちの1つまたは複数である請求項1〜10のいずれか一項に記載の接合方法。
- 請求項1〜11のいずれか一項記載の接合方法を用いて木材を接合する工程を含む、積層木材製品の製造方法。
