Description

本発明は、電子情報アクセス技術に関し、より詳細に言えば、プログラム・セグメント（番組の各部分）を例えば、テレビジョン、ラジオ、または記録済みのビデオもしくは音声のメディアによって伝送する電子信号の形態で組み込まれたアドレスによってオンライン情報プロバイダヘ自動的かつ直接にアクセスするメディア・オンライン・サービス・アクセス技術に関する。
以前は、テレビジョンおよびラジオ受信機などのメディア受信および表示システムはきわめて限定された方法でしか対話型情報プロバイダにリンクされていなかった。テレビジョン信号に乗せて、またはそれと組み合わせてテレビジョン番組の視聴者との間にディジタル情報の交換が可能なシステムがいくつか存在するが、このようなシステムは例えば放送またはケーブル・テレビジョンの事業者から利用できる単一の情報ソースへのアクセスを提供してきた。このようなシステムでは、情報サービスの選択は完全に放送またはケーブル・テレビジョンの事業者の支配下にある。同時に、テレビジョンおよびラジオの放送事業者の一部は番組の伝送中に視聴者の問い合わせ用のインターネット・アドレスを通知するようになっている。このインターネット・アドレスへのアクセスにはユーザは専用のコンピュータを利用しなくてはならない。
ビデオまたは音声の番組信号に組み込まれたアドレスによってオンライン情報プロバイダへの自動的で直接のユーザ・アクセスを提供するシステムはまだ存在していない。
例えばインターネット、プロディジィ(Ｐｒｏｄｉｇｙ)（Ｒ）、アメリカオンライン(Ａｍｅｒｉｃａ Ｏｎｌｉｎｅ)（Ｒ）およびコンプサーブ(Ｃｏｍｐｕｓｅｒｖｅ)（Ｒ）などのディジタル・ネットワークによるオンライン情報サービスの利用の最近の爆発的増加は、すぐに利用可能な最新のまたは詳細な情報へのアクセスの需要が増加していることを示す。番組の受信方法が放送、ケーブル手段、または記録済みメディアであるかを問わず、ビデオ番組の視聴者はそのビデオ番組で話題になった事項に関連する詳細情報を知りたいと考える場合が多い。テレビジョン番組および記録は長さに限界があるため、消費者が希望する可能性があるすべての関連情報を含んではいないし、そこに含まれる情報は適時ではない可能性がある。
したがって、テレビジョン番組、コマーシャルまたはニュース記事などの音声またはビデオの番組から抽出できるアドレスによってオンライン情報プロバイダへの自動的かつ直接のアクセスを提供するシステムが存在することが望ましい。
このようなシステムを使えば、いくつかの利益が得られる。例えば、教育または歴史のビデオ番組を見ている人は大人も子供もオンライン・アドレスによってディジタル方式でビデオ番組の制作者にアクセスして詳細情報を入手することによってテキストまたは静止画像の形式で追加の資料を容易に突き止めることができる。特定の広告の製品の詳細情報を探している消費者は広告主が指定した情報プロバイダのオンライン・アドレスにアクセスすることでその情報を容易に見つけることができる。ニュース記事から特定の情報または詳細情報を探しているニュース番組の視聴者はその番組の制作者が指定したオンライン情報プロバイダ経由でその情報に容易にアクセスできる。
オンライン・サービス・アクセス・システムを使って消費者、事業主、および政府にさらに多くの利益を提供できる。例えば、自動車製造業者は消費者がそのオンライン・サイトに迅速にアクセスして詳細情報を入手し、試乗を申し込み、部品を購入するためのビデオ画像に組み込まれたオンライン・アドレスによって消費者による情報への直接アクセスを可能にできる。このようなシステムを使って青果店はオンライン・サイト経由で広告を出して顧客から注文を受けて配達またはその他のショッピング・ニーズに応えることができる。カタログ通販業者はこのようなシステムを使ってコマーシャルを放送したあとでオンライン形式の消費者によるカタログへの迅速なアクセスを提供し、そのオンライン・サイトからすぐに注文を出すことができる。レコード会社はこのようなシステムを使って顧客が歌を聴いたり音楽ビデオを見ながら音楽ソフトを注文することを可能にできる。例えば、国税庁、新兵募集機関、または保健機関などの政府機関はこのようなシステムを使って法制、プログラム、または例えばガン、ＡＩＤＳ、および心臓疾患などの公衆の医療問題に関するサービスを放送で公開したあとで消費者にすぐに利用できる情報を提供できる。教育機関および学生はこのようなシステムを使って、番組が過去に録画されたものであってもビデオ番組に掲載された話題に関するオンライン掲示板およびデータベースから詳細情報または最新情報を入手することができる。
現在、ディジタル方式で符号化された情報が従来のテレビジョン伝送の変形されたビデオ信号によって送受信されるシステムが存在する。例えば、米国特許第４，８９４，７８９号には、アナログ放送ビデオ信号の他にディジタル情報信号がアナログ放送の垂直ブランキング期間の間に伝送され復号化されてテレビジョンの画面に表示されるシステムが記載されている。
特許文献１は小売り業者が中央のロケーションから入手できる製品に関する受信情報を従来のテレビジョン・セットで放送するシステムを記載している。このシステムはテレビジョンの画面に製品情報を表示するための復号器と、ユーザの任意選択による、製品が購入された時点で償却されるトークンを生成するトークン生成器を含む。放送情報は製品の購入時に利用できるトークンの償却と値の考慮事頃に関するデータを含む。
特許文献２はクーポン関連のディジタル情報が送信されたテレビジョン信号から復号器経由で受信されるシステムを記載している。この復号器はクーポン関連データを記録しておき、製品が購入された時点で読み出して償却する。
特許文献３は加入者があるチャネルに同調し、規定の電話番号をダイヤルするかケーブル・テレビジョン・チャネルにアクセスすることでリモート・ロケーションへの接続を要求する対話型ケーブル・テレビジョン・システムを記載している。システムが加入者を識別すると、テレビジョン・セットは目で見て購入できる製品またはサービスを説明するビデオのフレーム（およびおそらくそれに付随する音声情報）を表示する。
特許文献３は、テレビジョン信号からの符号化されたアドレス情報の抽出や、このような抽出されたアドレスによって自動的に接続を確立することでテレビジョン番組の視聴者がオンラインの情報プロバイダへアクセスすることを可能にするシステムについては記載していない。

以上のように、放送またはケーブル・テレビジョン信号によって対話型ユーザ・アクセスが可能なシステムが存在する。ただし、そのようなシステムは単一のケーブルまたは放送プロバイダ経由で直接利用できる情報ソースへのシステムで可能なアクセスに限定されている。
これと対照的に、本発明は、ビデオまたは音声番組を伝送する電子信号に組み込まれたプロバイダのアドレスによって数に制限がないオンライン情報プロバイダへの直接の自動的なユーザ・アクセスを容易にする。
したがって、本発明の目的は、ビデオまたは音声の番組を伝送する電子信号からオンライン情報プロバイダのアドレスを抽出するシステムまたは方法を提供することにある。
また、本発明のさらなる目的は、オンライン情報プロバイダのアドレスを抽出した後で番組のユーザ（視聴者およびラジオ聴取者）に追加の情報が利用できることを通知するシステムまたは方法を提供することにある。
本発明のさらに別の目的は、単一のユーザ・コマンドを受信した後で、ビデオまたは音声の番組を伝送する電子信号から抽出したアドレスによってオンライン情報プロバイダへのディジタル接続を直接かつ自動的に確立するシステムまたは方法を提供することにある。
本発明のさらに別の目的は、オンライン情報プロバイダから受信した信号をテレビジョン・セットなどの従来の再生装置で表示可能な形式に変換するシステムまたは方法を提供することにある。
以上の目的およびその他の目的は、本発明によって達成される。
本発明は、ビデオおよび音声の番組のコンテンツをオンライン情報信号コンテンツとリンクさせるシステムおよび処理を提供する。このシステムまたは処理は、受信された、または記録済みのテレビジョンまたはラジオ（音声）信号などのメディア番組からメディア番組で提供されるリンク経由でオンライン情報プロバイダへ以前は未達成だった直接自動のユーザ・アクセスを提供する。このシステムは、利用可能なメディア（例えば放送、テレビジョンおよびラジオ、またはテープまたはディスクなどの記録済みメディア）からビデオもしくは音声番組または複合音声/ビデオ番組を表す電子信号を受信する。オンライン情報プロバイダの電子アドレスを表す情報信号が例えば垂直ブランキング期間に組み込まれているか、表示される画像に干渉しない方法で電子信号内に他のやり方で符号化されている。オンライン情報プロバイダは、インターネット経由で対話方式でトランザクションができる出版社などの、ディジタル情報信号を交換してアクセスできる数百万の対話型情報プロバイダのいずれでもかまわない。メディア番組がビデオ・ディスプレイまたは音声サウンド・システムで再生されるために受信されると、このシステムは、組み込まれた電子アドレスを抽出して、ユーザの選択時にオンライン情報プロバイダへ直接アクセスする際に使用する。
アドレスは抽出時に記憶され、ユーザの選択時にオンライン情報プロバイダへアクセスする際に使用されるのが好ましい。抽出された信号アドレスが記憶される期間は、アドレスが連続的に送信されてリフレッシュされる場合のような比較的短い期間か、ビデオ信号の１フレームごとに１回といった非常に短い間隔か、アドレスが番組の選択した間隔にだけ送信されるようなより長い期間である。
このシステムは、電子信号を抽出すると、より多くの情報が利用可能であるという標識信号を提供する。標識信号はビデオ画面に表示されるメッセージ、または光、サウンドもしくは振動リストバンドやクリップオン・ユニットなどの無線触覚標識などの他の標識の形態をとることができる。また別に、ビデオまたは音声の番組は組み込まれたオンライン情報プロバイダのアドレスの存在と一致する番組の各ポイントにユーザのために表示されるロゴまたはメッセージを含むことができ、この場合、このシステムは、オンラインプロバイダのアドレスの抽出完了に応答してユーザに標識を提供する特定の構造を組み込む必要がなくなる。
標識信号の受信後、ユーザがより多くの情報を希望するのであればこのシステムへのコマンド、例えばプッシュボタン、ユーザ制御キーパッド、音声コマンド、マウス、タッチパッド、タッチスクリーン、またはその他のこのような入力方法を使ってオンライン情報プロバイダへのアクセスを要求できる。このようなコマンドを受信すると、このシステムは、抽出したアドレスを含む信号の送信によってオンライン情報プロバイダとの間に自動的にディジタル通信リンクを確立する。このような通信リンクの確立後、このシステムはオンライン情報プロバイダとの間に対話型通信を可能にすることが好ましい。
本発明の別の実施の形態では、この装置とネットワーク間に接続がすでに存在している場合には抽出されたアドレスをまず記憶せずに使用できる。このような接続が存在する場合、この装置はオンライン情報プロバイダのアドレスの抽出完了時にユーザに標識信号を提供する。ただし、この実施の形態では、このシステムは、ユーザ・コマンドの受信を待ってアクセスを開始し、このようなコマンドを受信した後で初めてこのシステムは電子信号から次の受信アドレスを抽出し、それを使ってオンライン情報プロバイダへの直接の接続を確立する。
好ましい実施の形態では、このシステムは、オンライン情報プロバイダにアクセスした後でオンライン情報プロバイダから情報を受信し、それを処理してビデオまたは音声再生システムで再生する。例えば、情報はテレビジョン放送信号の代わりに情報をテレビジョン画面、別のコンピュータ・モニタあるいはその他のディスプレイ装置に表示でき、または画像内の画像の形式でテレビジョン放送信号と共に表示することができる。このように、ユーザはオンライン情報プロバイダから利用可能な関連情報をすべて完全に調査することができる。
このシステムは、受信した情報信号を再フォーマットしてそれがなければ互換性がないシステム上に表示する、例えば、ディジタル方式で符号化されたビデオ信号をアナログ信号に変換して従来のテレビジョン・セットに再生するためのハードウェアを備えていることが好ましい。このシステムは、さらに、オンライン情報プロバイダへ送信してプロバイダとのユーザ通信トランザクションを提供するユーザ・コマンドを受信して処理するハードウェアを備えることが好ましい。
本発明によれば、下記の各態様が提供される。
（１） 再生装置と信号源とに接続されて使用されるとともに、通信ネットワークを経て複数のオンライン情報プロバイダに接続可能な状態で使用されるアクセス制御装置であって、それのユーザといずれかのオンライン情報プロバイダとの、前記通信ネットワークを使用したアクセスを、そのユーザによるビデオまたは音声の番組の視聴時に制御するものであって、
前記信号源から供給されて前記再生装置に送信されるビデオまたは音声の番組を表す電子信号であっていずれかのオンライン情報プロバイダのアドレスが埋め込まれたものからそのアドレスを抽出するアドレス抽出装置と、
そのアドレス抽出装置によっていずれかのオンライン情報プロバイダのアドレスが抽出されたことを表す標識信号を生成し、それを前記再生装置またはそれとは別のライトもしくはスピーカに出力する標識信号生成器と、
その標識信号の出力に応答して前記ユーザから発せられたユーザ・コマンドを受け取るユーザ入力インタフェースと、
そのユーザ入力インタフェースが前記ユーザ・コマンドを受け取ることに応答し、前記アドレス抽出装置によって抽出されたアドレスを使用して前記いずれかのオンライン情報プロバイダとのディジタル通信リンクを確立するためのリンク確立手段と
を含むアクセス制御装置。
（２） さらに、前記アドレス抽出装置によって抽出されたアドレスを記憶するメモリ装置を含み、前記リンク確立手段が、そのメモリ装置に記憶されたアドレスを使用することにより、前記いずれかのオンライン情報プロバイダとのディジタル通信リンクを確立するものである（１）項に記載のアクセス制御装置。
（３） 前記リンク確立手段が、前記ユーザ入力インタフェースが前記ユーザ・コマンドを受け取った後に前記アドレス抽出装置によって抽出されたアドレスを使用することにより、前記いずれかのオンライン情報プロバイダとのディジタル通信リンクを確立するものである（１）または（２）項に記載のアクセス制御装置。
（４） 再生装置と信号源とに接続されて使用されるとともに、通信ネットワークを経て複数のオンライン情報プロバイダに接続可能な状態で使用されるアクセス制御装置であって、それのユーザといずれかのオンライン情報プロバイダとの、前記通信ネットワークを使用したアクセスを、そのユーザによるビデオまたは音声の番組の視聴時に制御するものであって、
前記信号源から供給されて前記再生装置に送信されるビデオまたは音声の番組に組み込まれた可視または可聴の標識が前記再生装置によって再生されるのに応答して前記ユーザから発せられたユーザ・コマンドを受け取るユーザ入力インタフェースと、
そのユーザ入力インタフェースが前記ユーザ・コマンドを受け取ることに応答し、前記ビデオまたは音声の番組を表す電子信号であっていずれかのオンライン情報プロバイダのアドレスが埋め込まれたものからそのアドレスを抽出するアドレス抽出装置と、
その抽出されたアドレスを使って前記いずれかのオンライン情報プロバイダとのディジタル通信リンクを確立するためのリンク確立手段と
を含み、かつ、前記アドレス抽出装置が、前記ユーザ入力インタフェースが前記ユーザ・コマンドを受け取ることに応答し、前記電子信号から前記アドレスを抽出する手段を含むアクセス制御装置。
（５） 前記アドレス抽出装置が、前記ユーザが視聴している番組を表す前記電子信号から、その番組のコンテンツに関する追加の情報を提供するオンライン情報プロバイダに関連付けられたアドレスを抽出するものであり、
前記リンク確立手段が、その抽出されたアドレスを使用して、前記ユーザが視聴している番組のコンテンツに関する追加の情報を提供するオンライン情報プロバイダとのディジタル通信リンクを確立するためのものである前記（１）ないし（４）項のいずれかに記載のアクセス制御装置。
（６） 前記番組がビデオ番組を含み、
前記ユーザが視聴しているビデオ番組のコンテンツに関する追加の情報を提供するオンライン情報プロバイダから、前記確立されたディジタル通信リンクにより、提供された追加の情報を前記再生装置上に前記ビデオ番組と共に画像内の画像形式で表示する前記（５）項に記載のアクセス制御装置。
（７） 当該アクセス制御装置が、ディジタル情報信号を送受信するモデムを有するコンピュータに接続されて使用され、そのモデムにより、前記いずれかのオンライン情報プロバイダへのアクセスを確立するものである前記（１）ないし（６）項のいずれかに記載のアクセス制御装置。

本発明によるオンライン・サービス・アクセス・システムを図１に示す。図１について説明する。同図のオンライン・サービス・アクセス・システムは、オンライン・アクセスを提供し、受信したオンライン情報信号にアクセスするために必要なすべてのコンポーネントを組み込んだアクセス制御装置１０を含む。アクセス制御装置１０はビデオ信号源１４から従来の形式で放送、ケーブル、または記録済みのメディア番組から電子信号１２を受信する構成になっている。ビデオ信号源１４はケーブルまたは放送ビデオ入力１５に接続されたチャネル・セレクタ１６からの出力、またはビデオカセット・レコーダまたはアナログあるいはディジタル・ビデオディスク装置などのビデオ・プレイバック・システム１８からの出力を提供するように選択的な切替えが可能である。チャネル・セレクタ１６はプレイバック・システム１８とは別のユニットで、またはアクセス制御装置１０それ自体の中で提供できることが理解されよう。また別に、アクセス制御装置１０は放送またはケーブル・ビデオ源から受信した、または例えばビデオカセット・レコーダまたはディジタル・ビデオ・ディスク装置のフロント・エンド受信回路によってベースバンドにダウンコンバートされたラジオ周波数で番組信号を受信して復号化するよう構成することもできる。また、アクセス制御装置１０によって提供された機能および結果は、装置に接続された多数の利用可能なプレイバック・システムがアナログ形式であろうがディジタル形式であろうが、またはビデオテープ、オーディオテープ、またはディスク・メディアのいずれで動作するものであっても、そのいずれにも依存しないことが理解されよう。
アクセス制御装置１０は１次出力信号線３６経由でテレビジョン・セットなどの従来の再生システム２２に接続され、２次出力信号線３８経由でコンピュータ・モニタなどの高解像度再生システム４０に任意選択で接続される。さらに、アクセス制御装置１０は電話回線、同軸ケーブル、光ファイバ・リンク、セルラー、無線電話、または衛星リンクなどの情報信号搬送体３２経由で公衆または私設のネットワーク３０に接続される。オフィス・ネットワーク、企業ネットワーク、公衆インターネットまたは回線交換ネットワークなどの私設または公衆ローカル・エリア・ネットワークまたはワイド・エリア・ネットワークのいずれでもよいネットワーク３０を使ってアクセス制御装置１０と複数のオンライン情報プロバイダ３４ａ、３４ｂ、３４ｃ、．．．３４ｎの選択した１つの間にアドレスと情報信号がルーティングされる。アクセス制御装置１０はオンライン情報プロバイダからネットワーク３０経由でビデオまたは音声の番組コンテンツを備えた情報信号を受信し、適切な従来の処理によって選択的に従来の番組信号または高解像度信号を提供し、標準再生システム２２または高解像度再生システム４０にそれぞれ再生する。
アクセス制御装置１０の内部構造を図２を参照しながら説明する。アクセス制御装置１０は電子信号１２を受信するアドレス抽出装置４２を備える。アドレス抽出装置４２はビデオまたは音声の番組信号に組み込まれたアドレスを検出し、復号化し、記憶するハードウェアまたはソフトウェアあるいはその両方を含む。アナログ・ビデオ信号と共に送信されるアドレス信号を検出する現存する方法の中で、アドレス抽出装置４２は垂直ブランキング期間または表示された画像品質が影響を受けないような方法で従来のビデオ信号の他の部分で送信されるディジタル・アドレスを検出するよう構成することができる。例えば、アドレス信号は垂直ブランキング期間などのビデオ信号の部分で、同期または輝度またはクロマ信号を変化させて送信できる。アドレス抽出装置４２は検出したアドレスを例えばレジスタまたはメモリ装置（図示されていない）によって電気的に記憶してユーザの選択時にオンライン・サービスプロバイダにアクセスする際に使用するよう構成できる。アドレス信号は抽出されたアドレス信号の記憶とリフレッシュが非常に短い間隔で行われるビデオ番組の１フレームごとに１回といった非常に短い間隔で送信できる。また別に、アドレス信号はそれより長い間隔、すなわち、抽出されたアドレス信号が記憶される間隔がはるかに長い番組内の独立した各間隔で送信することもできる。
ビデオまたは音声の番組がディジタル方式で符号化される場合、アドレス抽出装置４２はディジタル方式で符号化されたビデオまたは音声の電子信号１２と共に受信されるアドレス信号を検出するいくつかの既存の方法のいずれかで構成できる。アドレス抽出装置４２の構成の細部は当技術分野で周知であり、これ以上詳しく説明する必要はない。
アドレス抽出装置４２は標識信号生成器４６への出力接続を備える。標識信号生成器４６は、アドレス抽出装置４２が電子信号１２から復号化した場合、電子アドレスを使ってアクセスできる番組に関するより多くの情報が利用できることをユーザに通知する。標識信号生成器４６は例えばビデオ画像２０（例えば画像内の画像、ロゴ、またはアイコン）を再生システム２２にビデオ番組信号を使って表示してユーザにオンラインプロバイダのアドレスが記憶されていることと追加の情報が利用できることを通知する。このような映像ディスプレイの代わりに、またはそれに加えて、標識信号生成器４６はアクセス制御装置１０または再生装置２２の外部パネル上の表示ライト２４またはその他の視覚標識を起動してユーザに通知することができる。また別に、標識信号生成器４６は再生システム２２のスピーカ２６から、またはアクセス制御装置１０にあるスピーカ２８によってサウンドを生成することができる。ここでも標識信号生成器４６の設計は当業界で周知である。
アクセス制御装置１０はアドレス抽出装置４２によって電子信号１２から検出したアドレスを使ってオンライン情報プロバイダへの直接のディジタル通信リンクの確立を自動的に開始し、ユーザとオンライン情報プロバイダとの対話型通信を可能にする、ユーザ・コマンドを受け取るためのユーザ入力インタフェース５６を備える。多くの従来の入力インタフェースがその従来のテレビジョンおよび音声サウンド・システムとの互換性のためにユーザ・インタフェース５６としての使用に適していることが理解されよう。このような入力インタフェースには有線または無線のリモート・ユーザ制御装置からの単一キーまたは複数キーのシーケンス入力を復号化する赤外線、無線、および音声周波数インタフェースがある。ユーザ入力インタフェース５６はリモート・ユーザ制御装置の特殊な目的のボタンが押された時点を検出し、オンラインプロバイダの記憶されたアドレスを自動的に検索して送信させる応答信号を提供することが好ましい。ユーザ入力インタフェース５６はまた従来のユーザ制御装置の特殊なキー・シーケンス（「ＥＮＴＥＲ」、「ＥＮＴＥＲ」、「＋ＶＯＬＵＭＥ」などのシーケンス）が押された時点を検出し、オンライン情報プロバイダとの対話型通信を可能にするように構成することができる。また別に、ユーザ入力インタフェース５６はマウス、タッチパッド、タッチスクリーン、トラックボール、ジョイスティック、プッシュボタン、イレーザ・ヘッド、またはその他のこのような装置などのすべての適切なマイクロコンピュータ・タイプのユーザ・インタフェースによっても実施できる。ユーザ入力インタフェース５６はモデム５４経由でオンライン情報プロバイダへのディジタル情報信号の送信を提供し、受信するように構成し、詳細情報の検索およびトランザクションを実行し、アクセス先のプロバイダにメッセージを送信または通知するためのオンライン情報プロバイダへの対話型ユーザ・アクセスを可能にすることが好ましい。
アクセス制御装置１０はアクセス制御装置１０と公衆交換網３０の間で情報信号搬送回線３２経由でディジタル情報信号を送受信するモデム５４を備える。モデム５４は着信情報信号を復調してビデオまたは音声信号３８あるいはその両方を抽出するプロセッサ５８へ出力する。アクセス制御装置１０は互換性がない信号を調整または変換して、ユーザ制御によってテレビジョン信号の代わりに、またはテレビジョン信号に重畳して、または画像内の画像形式でテレビジョン・セットなどの従来の再生システム２２に表示するための信号変換器６２を含む。また別に、プロセッサ５８は回線３８上のビデオ信号をコンピュータ・モニタなどの高解像度再生システム４０に提供する。標識信号生成器４６は信号が信号変換器６２の出力に現れるたびに１次出力信号３６を自動的にオフにするスイッチ（図示されていない）を組み込むこともできる。このように、オンライン情報プロバイダから受信した情報信号は通常の方法で表示されたビデオ信号３６の代わりに従来の再生システム２２に自動的に表示される。プロセッサ５８はアドレス抽出装置４２から回線５５経由で出力された入力ビデオまたは音声電子番組信号を受信することもできる（ただし、電子信号回線１２を直接接続することもできる）。このように、プロセッサ５８をオンライン情報プロバイダから受信した情報信号と組み合わせたビデオまたは音声信号を処理するよう構成して、従来の再生システム２２に表示できる「画像内の画像」信号を生成することができる。
本システムの動作について以下に説明する。チャネル・セレクタ１６またはプレイバック・システム１８から受信した記録済みのビデオテープ、またはアナログあるいはディジタル・ビデオディスクなどのビデオ番組または音声番組から抽出した信号などの、電子信号１２のブランキング期間またはその他の非表示部分にオンライン情報プロバイダの電子アドレスを表す組込まれた信号を含む電子信号１２がアドレス抽出装置４２によって受信される。電子信号１２からアドレス抽出装置４２はその内部にそのようなすべてのアドレスが組み込まれていると、オンライン情報サービスプロバイダのディジタル・アドレスを検出し、復号化し、記憶する。アドレスの復号化と記憶が完了すると、アドレス抽出装置４２は信号回線４４経由で標識信号生成器４６を起動する。標識信号生成器４６は標識信号を生成し従来の再生システム２２によって表示または変換できるように従来の番組信号３６にそれを重ねるか符号化する。また別に、標識信号生成器４６は、アクセス制御装置１０のライト２４の点灯またはスピーカ２８でのサウンド生成などの特殊目的の標識を起動する回線５０上の信号を生成する。
ユーザがオンライン情報プロバイダにアクセスすることを希望すると、例えば、リモート制御装置の特殊なボタンを押してアクセス制御装置１０にアクセスするコマンドを発行する。リモート制御装置はコマンド信号を受信するユーザ・インタフェース５６へコマンド信号を送信する。ユーザ・インタフェース５６は今度はオンライン情報プロバイダの記憶されたアドレスを検索するためのアドレス抽出装置４２に入力される信号を生成する。適切なソフトウェアまたはハードウェア制御の下で、アドレスはモデム５４経由でネットワーク３０上で３４ｃなどのオンライン情報プロバイダに送信される。
オンライン情報プロバイダへのアクセスが確立すると、アクセス制御装置１０は自動的にオンライン情報プロバイダからモデム５４経由でディジタル情報信号を受信する。受信した情報信号はプロセッサ５８が処理し従来のＴＶ再生システム２２または高解像度再生システム４０、例えば、コンピュータ・モニタまたはその他のディスプレイ装置に表示される。従来のテレビジョン・セットなどの従来の再生システム２２に直接表示できない受信信号は信号変換器６２で変換されて従来の再生システムに表示できることが好ましい。オンライン情報プロバイダから受信した情報信号は従来の再生システム２２に通常表示されるビデオ信号の代わりに静止または動画像として表示することができ、従来の再生システム２２またはコンピュータ・モニタ４０またはその他のディスプレイ装置に通常表示されるビデオ信号と共に「画像内の画像」表示の一部として表示できる。
アクセスが確立した後で、ユーザ・インタフェース５６経由で受信したユーザ・コマンドはモデム５４経由でオンライン情報プロバイダに送信され、それによってオンラインプロバイダとの対話型のユーザ・アクセスが提供され、詳細情報の検索、トランザクションの実行、アクセス先プロバイダへのメッセージの送信または通知、およびオンライン接続で通常実行できる他のすべての動作が可能になる。
本発明の別の実施の形態を図３に示す。図３は利用可能なコンピュータ１６４と共に動作する実施の形態である。この実施の形態では、アクセス制御装置１１０は内部プロセッサまたはモデムを必要としない。それはこのような機能がアクセス制御装置に接続されたコンピュータ１６４によって提供されるためである。さらに、コンピュータ１６４は高解像度再生システム４０として機能するモニタおよび音声再生コンポーネントも提供する。アドレス抽出装置１４２、標識信号生成器１４６、およびアクセス制御装置１１０のユーザ入力インタフェース１５６は出力インタフェース１６６経由で接続され、コンピュータ１６４に復号化されたアドレス出力、標識信号、およびユーザ・コマンドをそれぞれ提供する。その他の点では、アクセス制御装置１１０が接続されて、前述した（図２）アクセス制御装置１０の自己完結型の実施の形態と同様、電子信号１２を受信し標識１２４または標識１２８に従来の番組信号１２２および信号１５０を提供する。本発明のコンピュータがサポートする実施の形態（図３）は自己完結型の実施の形態（図１および図２）と同じ機能を提供し、本質的に同じ動作をするため、これ以上の詳述する必要はないことが理解されよう。
本発明のさらに別の実施の形態では、図１〜図３に関してネットワーク３０への接続がモデム５４またはコンピュータ１６４内に提供されるモデム経由でアクセス制御装置１０によって連続的に保持される。この実施の形態について図２に示すアクセス制御装置１０に関連して説明するが、当業者は図３に示すアクセス制御装置に合わせた動作に必要な構造変更を容易に理解するであろう。この実施の形態では、アドレス抽出装置４２は、ビデオまたはオーディオ・プログラム信号に埋め込まれたオンライン情報プロバイダのアドレスを検出して復号するが、そのアドレスを記憶することはない。
本発明の先行する実施の形態で記載したように、アドレス抽出装置４２は電子信号内にオンライン情報プロバイダのアドレスを検出すると標識信号生成器４６に信号を提供する。アドレス抽出装置４２は埋め込まれたアドレスを検出して、それをモデム５４に渡す。今度はモデム５４はオンライン情報プロバイダへのアクセスを開始するユーザ・コマンドを最初に受信している場合は抽出されたアドレスだけを使う。本発明のこの実施の形態はオンライン情報プロバイダのアドレスが頻繁にまたは連続して送信されるビデオまたは音声の番組信号に適用できることが理解されよう。モデム５４はオンライン・アクセスを開始するユーザ・コマンドを受信すると、次に受信されるオンライン情報プロバイダのアドレスに関連付けられたオンライン情報プロバイダとの直接のディジタル通信リンクを自動的に確立するためのハードウェアまたはソフトウェアあるいはその両方を備える。
本発明のこの非アドレス記憶実施の形態の動作の例として、オンライン情報プロバイダのアドレスを含む、頻繁に送信される、組み込まれた信号を備えたビデオまたは音声の番組信号が回線１２経由でアドレス抽出装置４２に受信される。アドレス抽出装置４２はオンライン情報プロバイダのアドレスを検出して復号化するが、記憶せずにモデム５４に渡す。モデム５４はアクセスを開始するユーザ・コマンドがユーザ・インタフェース５６から最初に受信されていない限り、オンライン情報プロバイダのアドレスに関して処理をしない。このようなユーザ・コマンドが受信されている場合、モデム５４は次に受信したアドレスを使ってネットワーク３０上で信号を送信し、オンライン情報プロバイダとの間にディジタル通信リンクを確立する。非アドレス記憶実施の形態のこの機能および動作はその他の点では記載された本発明の残りの実施の形態の場合と同じで、これ以上詳述する必要がない。
本発明のさらに別の実施の形態では、標識信号生成器４６、１４６（図３）をアクセス制御装置１０に組み込むことなしにオンライン情報プロバイダへの自動的な直接のユーザ・アクセスが達成される。この実施の形態では生成されたビデオまたは音声の番組は、オンライン情報プロバイダのアドレスが基礎の電子番組信号内にある場合、番組の各部分で従来の再生システム２２または高解像度再生システム４０あるいはその両方で自動的に表示またはサウンド再生されるロゴやメッセージなどの可視または可聴標識を組み込んでいる。可視または可聴標識によってユーザはオンライン情報プロバイダのアドレスの利用可能性を知る。したがって、本発明のこの実施の形態ではアドレス抽出装置４２はオンライン情報プロバイダへのアクセスを開始するユーザ・コマンドを受信した後でのみ埋め込まれたオンライン情報プロバイダのアドレスを検出して復号化するように構成できる。当業者は本発明のこの実施の形態が他の点で前述した本発明の残りの実施の形態と同じ動作であり以下に詳述する必要がないことを理解するであろう。
以上、本発明をその好ましい実施の形態に関して説明して例示してきたが、本発明の精神と範囲を逸脱することなしに上記の説明および例示の形式と詳細を変更できることは当業者には明らかであろう。

Claims (7)

  1. 信号源と、その信号源から供給されたビデオまたは音声の番組を再生する再生装置とに接続されて使用されるとともに、通信ネットワークを経てオンライン情報プロバイダに接続可能な状態で使用されるアクセス制御装置であって、それのユーザと前記オンライン情報プロバイダとの、前記通信ネットワークを使用したアクセスを、ユーザによる前記番組の視聴時に制御するものであって、
    前記番組を表す電子信号であって前記オンライン情報プロバイダのアドレスが予め埋め込まれたものからそのアドレスを抽出するアドレス抽出装置と、
    前記番組を表す電子信号から前記アドレスを前記アドレス抽出装置が抽出したことに応答して、前記オンライン情報プロバイダから前記通信ネットワークを経てオンライン情報を入手可能であることをユーザに通知する通知手段と、
    前記アドレス抽出装置によって抽出されたアドレスであって、前記通知に応答してユーザから発せられたコマンドを受け取った後に抽出されたものを使用して、前記オンライン情報プロバイダとのディジタル通信リンクを自動的に確立し、それにより、ユーザが、その視聴している番組に関する追加の情報を前記オンライン情報プロバイダから前記通信ネットワークを経て入手できるようにするリンク確立手段と
    を含むアクセス制御装置。
  2. 前記番組が、ビデオ番組を含み、
    前記確立されたディジタル通信リンクにより前記オンライン情報プロバイダから提供された前記追加の情報であってユーザが現に視聴している前記ビデオ番組に関するものを前記再生装置上にそのビデオ番組と共に表示する請求項１に記載のアクセス制御装置。
  3. 当該アクセス制御装置が、ディジタル情報信号を送受信するモデムを有するコンピュータに接続されて使用され、そのモデムにより、前記オンライン情報プロバイダへのアクセスを自動的に確立する請求項１または２に記載のアクセス制御装置。
  4. 前記コンピュータが、モニタを有し、そのコンピュータが、前記モデム経由で前記オンライン情報プロバイダから受信したディジタル情報信号を前記モニタに表示する請求項３に記載のアクセス制御装置。
  5. さらに、
    ディジタル情報信号を送受信するモデムであって、前記オンライン情報プロバイダへのアクセスを確立するものと、
    そのモデムにより受信されたディジタル情報信号を処理して前記再生装置または他の表示装置に表示するプロセッサと
    を含む請求項１ないし４のいずれかに記載のアクセス制御装置。
  6. 電子信号が表すビデオまたは音声の番組の視聴時に、その番組内に提供されたリンク経由でオンライン情報プロバイダへの直接の、通信ネットワークを使用したディジタル通信アクセスをオンライン情報サービスのユーザに提供する方法であって、
    前記番組を表す電子信号であって前記オンライン情報プロバイダのアドレスが予め埋め込まれたものからそのアドレスを抽出する抽出ステップと、
    前記番組を表す電子信号から前記アドレスが前記抽出ステップにおいて抽出されたことに応答して、前記オンライン情報プロバイダから前記通信ネットワークを経てオンライン情報を入手可能であることをユーザに通知する通知ステップと、
    前記抽出ステップにおいて抽出されたアドレスであって、前記通知に応答してユーザから発せられたコマンドを受け取った後に抽出されたものを使用して、前記オンライン情報プロバイダとのディジタル通信リンクを自動的に確立し、それにより、ユーザが、その視聴している番組に関する追加の情報を前記オンライン情報プロバイダから前記通信ネットワークを経て入手できるようにする確立ステップと
    を含む方法。
  7. オンライン情報サービスのユーザに、電子信号が表す番組の視聴時に、その番組内に提供されたアドレス経由でオンライン情報プロバイダへの直接のディジタル通信アクセスを通信ネットワークを通じて提供する方法であって、
    前記番組を提供する番組提供側において、前記番組を提供する番組提供ステップと、
    前記番組提供側において、前記番組に関連して前記アドレスを前記電子信号に埋め込まれた情報信号として提供するアドレス提供ステップと、
    ユーザが前記番組を視聴する番組視聴側において、前記電子信号から前記アドレスを抽出する抽出ステップであって、その抽出されたアドレスが前記オンライン情報プロバイダに関連付けられているものと、
    前記番組視聴側において、前記番組を表す電子信号から前記アドレスが前記抽出ステップにおいて抽出されたことに応答して、前記番組に関する追加の情報を前記オンライン情報プロバイダから入手可能であることをユーザに通知する通知ステップと、
    前記番組視聴側において、前記抽出ステップにおいて抽出されたアドレスであって、前記通知に応答してユーザから発せられたコマンドを受け取った後に抽出されたものを使用して、前記オンライン情報プロバイダとのディジタル通信リンクを自動的に確立し、それにより、ユーザが前記追加の情報を前記オンライン情報プロバイダから前記通信ネットワークを経て入手できるようにする確立ステップと
    を含む方法。
