Abstract

Description

미디어 온라인 서비스 액세스 시스템과 방법{MEDIA ONLINE SERVICES ACCESS SYSTEM AND METHOD}
본 발명은 전자 정보 액세스 시스템에 관한 것으로, 특히 (예를 들어 텔레비젼, 라디오, 또는 미리 녹화된 비디오나 오디오 매체를 통해) 프로그램 세그멘트를 운반하는 전자 신호에 삽입되어 있는 어드레스를 통해 온라인 정보 공급자로의 직접 자동화 액세스(direct automated access)를 제공하는 미디어 온라인 서비스 액세스 시스템에 관한 것이다.
지금까지, 텔레비젼과 라디오 수신기 등의 미디어 수신 및 디스플레이 시스템은 매우 제한적인 방식으로 대화식 정보 공급자(interactive information providers)에 링크되어 왔다. 텔레비젼 신호를 통해 또는 텔레비젼 신호와의 조합으로 텔레비젼 프로그램의 시청자에게 디지털 정보의 교환을 가능케 해주는 몇가지 시스템이 존재하고 있지만, 이들 시스템은 예를 들어 방송이나 케이블 텔레비젼 운영자로부터의 이용가능한 하나의 정보원(single information source)에 대한 액세스만을 제공해왔다. 이러한 시스템에서 정보 서비스의 선택은 전적으로 방송이나 케이블 텔레비젼 운영자의 통제 범위 내에 있었다. 동시에 일부 텔레비젼과 라디오 방송은 프로그램 전송 도중에 시청자 질의를 위한 인터넷 주소를 알려주고 있다. 이러한 인터넷 주소를 액세스하기 위해서는 사용자가 자신의 컴퓨터를 이용하여야 한다. 비디오 또는 오디오 프로그램 신호에 삽입되어 있는 어드레스를 통해 온라인 정보 공급자로의 자동화된 직접 사용자 액세스를 제공하는 시스템은 아직 존재하지 않는다.
인터넷, 프로디지(R), 아메리카 온라인(R) 및 컴퓨서브(R) 등의 디지털 망을 통한 온라인 정보 서비스를 이용하는 최근의 급격한 증가는 용이하게 입수할 수 있는 최신 정보나 상세한 정보로의 액세스를 위한 요구가 증가하고 있음을 보여주고있다. 프로그램이 방송이나 케이블 수단을 통해 또는 미리 녹화(recorded;기록)된 매체로부터 수신되던지 간에 비디오 프로그램의 시청자는 이 비디오 프로그램에 나타난 주제에 관련된 보다 많은 정보를 발견하기를 시도할 수도 있다. 텔레비젼 프로그램과 레코딩(recordings)은 한정된 길이이기 때문에 이것들은 고객(consumer)이 원하는 관련 정보 모두를 포함하고 있지는 않으며 그 안에 포함된 정보는 상황에 맞지 않을 수도 있다. 그러므로, 텔레비젼 프로그램, 상업방송이나 뉴스 기사 등의 오디오나 비디오 프로그램으로부터 추출될 수 있는 어드레스를 통해 온라인 정보 공급자로의 자동적이면서도 직접적인 액세스를 제공하는 시스템이 존재하는 것이 바람직하다. 이러한 시스템에서 몇몇 이점이 얻어질 수 있다. 예를 들어 교육적인 또는 역사적인 비디오 프로그램을 시청하는 성인과 아이들은 온라인 어드레스를 통해 디지털적으로 제조자로부터 보다 많은 정보를 액세스함으로써 비디오 프로그램의 제조자에 의해 텍스트나 정지화면(still picture) 형태로 제공되는 부가적인 자료를 쉽게 찾을 수 있다. 특정 광고 상품에 대한 보다 많은 정보를 찾는 소비자들은 광고주에 의해 지정된 정보 공급자의 온라인 주소를 액세스함으로써 그 정보를 쉽게 찾을 수도 있다. 뉴스 기사나 보다 상세한 정보로부터 특정 정보를 탐색하는 뉴스 프로그램 시청자들은 이러한 프로그램의 제작자에 의해 지정된 온라인 정보 공급자를 통해 특정 정보를 쉽게 액세스할 수 있다.
온라인 서비스 액세스 시스템은 소비자, 사업가, 및 정부에 또다른 이점을 제공하도록 사용될 수도 있다. 예를 들어 자동차 제조업자는 비디오 프레젠테이션(video presentation)에 포함되어 있는 온라인 어드레스를 통해 고객에게 바로 이용될 수 있는 정보를 만들 수도 있으므로 소비자는 제조자의 온라인 사이트에 즉시 접속하여 보다 많은 정보를 요청하거나, 시승(test drive)을 요구하거나 부품을 구입할 수도 있다. 이러한 시스템을 통해 잡화점(grocery store)은 온라인 사이트를 통해 광고를 하고 고객으로부터의 그 사이트를 통한 가정으로의 배달이나 그밖의 쇼핑물에 대한 주문을 접수할 수 있다. 카타로그 소매상(catalog retailer)은 온라인 형태의 자신의 카타로그에 대한 광고방송 후에 고객에게 신속한 액세스를 제공하기 위해 그리고 자신의 온라인 사이트에 신속히 주문이 올려질 수 있도록 하는데 상기 시스템을 이용할 수 있다. 레코드 회사는 고객이 노래를 듣거나 뮤직 비디오를 보면서 음반을 주문하도록 하는데 상기 시스템을 이용할 수 있다. 국세청이나, 병무청, 또는 보건부와 같은 정부 기관은 예를 들어 암, AIDS, 심장 질환 등 규정(regulations), 프로그램, 또는 공중 위생 관련사항들에 대한 공중 서비스 방송 후에 뒤이어, 용이하게 입수 가능한 정보를 필요한 사람(consumers)에게 제공하는데 상기 시스템을 사용할 수 있다. 교육자와 학생들은 프로그램이 종래에 녹화된 것일지라도 온라인 광고판과 비디오 프로그램에 나타난 주제와 관련된 데이타 베이스로부터 보다 상세한 정보 즉, 갱신된 세세한 정보(up-to-the-minute information)를 입수하는데 상기 시스템을 이용할 수 있다.
현재에는 디지털식으로 인코드된 정보(digitally encoded information)가 통상적인 텔레비젼 전송의 변형된 비디오 신호(modified video signal)를 통해 전송 및 수신되는 시스템이 존재하고 있다. 예를 들어 미국 특허 제4,894,789호에는 아날로그 방송 텔레비젼 신호의 수직 귀선 소거 기간(vertical blanking interval)동안 디지털 정보 신호가 전송되어 아날로그 방송 비디오 신호에 더해져 텔레비젼 스크린에 디스플레이되는 시스템이 개시되어 있다.
미국 특허 제5,128,752호에는 소매상이 중앙 위치(central position)를 통해 입수가능한 제품에 관련하여 종래의 텔레비젼 세트 상에서 수신할 수 있는 정보를 방송하는 시스템이 개시되어 있다. 이 시스템은 텔레비젼 스크린 상에 제품 정보를 디스플레이하기 위한 디코더와, 사용자의 선택으로 제품이 구입된 경우, 상환되는 토큰(tokens)을 발생시키기 위한 토큰 생성기(token generator)도 포함하고 있다. 방송 정보는 토큰 상환(token redemption)에 관련된 데이타와 제품의 구입시 이용가능한 가치 고려값(value considerations)을 포함하고 있다.
미국 특허 제5,285,278호에는 쿠폰관련 디지털 정보(coupon-related digital information)가 전송된 텔레비젼 신호로부터 디코더를 통해 수신되는 시스템이 개시되어 있다. 디코더는 이후에 제품이 구입되는 시점에서 쿠폰의 판독과 상환을 위하여, 쿠폰관련 데이터를 기록한다.
미국 특허 제4,905,094('094 특허)호에는 가입자가 채널을 맞추고 선정된 전화번호를 다이얼링하거나 또는 케이블 채널을 액세스함으로써 원격지(remote location)로의 접속을 요구하는 대화식 케이블 텔레비젼 시스템이 개시되어 있다. 시스템이 가입자를 식별하면 텔레비젼 세트는 시청되거나 구입될 수도 있는 제품이나 서비스를 기술하는 비디오(와 아마도 오디오 정보가 수반되는)의 프레임(frame)을 디스플레이한다. 상기 '094 특허에는 텔레비젼 신호로부터 인코드된 어드레스 정보를 추출하거나 또는 텔레비젼 시청자로 하여금 상기 추출된 어드레스를 통해자동으로 접속을 설정하도록 함으로써 온라인 정보 공급자에 액세스하도록 하는 시스템은 개시되어 있지 않다.
따라서, 방송이나 케이블 텔레비젼 신호를 통해 대화식 사용자 액세스를 제공할 수 있는 시스템이 존재한다. 그러나, 이러한 시스템은 단일의 케이블 (unitary cable)이나 방송 공급자를 통해 직접 이용가능한 정보원으로의 액세스에 있어 제한되어 있다. 이와 달리 본 발명은 비디오 또는 오디오 프로그램을 운반하는 전자 신호에 포함되어 있는 공급자 어드레스를 통해 수많은 온라인 정보 공급자(unlimited number of online information providers)로의 직접적인 자동화 사용자 액세스를 용이하게 한다.
따라서, 본 발명은 비디오 또는 오디오 프로그램을 운반하는 전자 신호로부터 온라인 정보 공급자의 어드레스를 추출하기 위한 시스템을 제공함에 그 목적이 있다.
본 발명의 제2 목적은 온라인 정보 공급자 어드레스를 추출한 후에 보다 많은 정보가 이용가능함을 프로그램 사용자(즉, 시청자나 청취자)에게 알려주는 시스템을 제공하는 것이다.
본 발명의 제3 목적은 하나의 사용자 명령 수신 즉시, 비디오 또는 오디오 프로그램을 운반하는 전자신호로부터 추출된 어드레스를 통해 온라인 정보 공급자와의 디지털 접속을 직접적이면서 자동적으로 설정하는 자동 시스템을 제공하는 것이다.
본 발명의 제4 목적은 온라인 정보 공급자로부터 수신된 정보 신호를 텔레비젼 세트와 같은 통상적인 재생 시스템 상에 디스플레이될 수 있는 형태로 변환하는 시스템을 제공하는 것이다.
이러한 목적들은 본 발명의 미디어 온라인 서비스 액세스 시스템(media online service access system)에 의해 제공된다.

본 발명의 미디어 온라인 서비스 액세스 시스템은 비디오 및 오디오 프로그램 내용과 온라인 정보 신호 내용을 링크시키는 시스템과 프로세스를 제공한다. 상기 시스템은 지금까지는 달성되지 못하였던 수신되거나 또는 미리 녹화된 텔레비젼이나 라디오 (오디오) 신호 등의 미디어 프로그램으로부터의 직접 자동화 사용자 액세스를 미디어 프로그램에 제공된 링크를 통해 온라인 정보 공급자에게 제공한다. 액세스 시스템은 이용가능한 매체(예를 들어 방송이나 케이블 텔레비젼과 라디오 또는 테이프나 디스크 등의 미리 녹화된 매체)로부터의 비디오나 오디오 프로그램 또는 조합된 오디오/비디오 프로그램을 나타내는 전자신호를 수신한다. 온라인 정보 공급자의 전자 어드레스를 나타내는 정보 신호는 예를 들어 수직 귀선 소거 기간(vertical blanking interval) 동안에 전자 신호에 삽입되거나 또는 기타의 디스플레이된 이미지와 간섭하지 않는 방식으로 전자 신호로 인코드된다. 온라인 정보 공급자는 예를 들어 대화식 거래(interactive transactions)를 위해 인터넷을 통해 접근 가능한 발행자(publisher) 등의 디지털 정보 신호의 교환을 통해 액세스될 수 있는 수백만 대화식 정보 공급자 중 하나일 수 있다. 비디오 디스플레이 또는 오디오 사운드 시스템 상에서의 재생을 위해 미디어 프로그램(media program)이 수신됨에 따라, 액세스 시스템은 사용자의 선택에 따라 온라인 정보 공급자를 직접 액세스하여 이용하기 위해 상기 포함된 전자 어드레스를 추출한다.
어드레스는 사용자의 선택에 따라 추출시 저장되어 온라인 정보 공급자의 액세스에 이용되는 것이 바람직하다. 추출된 신호 어드레스가 저장되는 기간(duration)은 어드레스가 전송되어 지속적으로 리프레쉬되는 경우 또는 예를 들어 비디오 신호의 각 프레임 당 한번씩의 매우 짧은 간격으로 리프레쉬되는 경우처럼 비교적 짧을 수도 있으며, 혹은 프로그램의 선택된 기간(intervals)들에서만 어드레스가 전송되는 경우처럼 저장기간이 보다 길 수도 있다.
전자 어드레스를 성공적으로 추출하는 즉시, 액세스 시스템은 보다 많은 정보가 이용가능함을 나타내는 표시 신호(indicator signal)를 사용자에게 제공한다. 표시 신호는 비디오 스크린 상에 디스플레이되는 메시지의 형태나, 광, 음향, 무선 촉감 표시기(wireless tactile indicator)- 예를 들어 진동 밴드(vibrating wristband)나 클립 고정식 유닛(clip-on unit) - 의 등의 기타 표시기의 형태를 취할 수 있다. 한편, 비디오 또는 오디오 프로그램은 프로그램에 포함된 온라인 정보 공급자 어드레스의 존재와 부합하는 지점에서 사용자를 위해 디스플레이되는 로고나 메시지를 포함할 수도 있으며, 이러한 경우에는 온라인 공급자 어드레스의 성공적인 추출에 응답하여, 사용자에게 표시(indication)를 제공하기 위해 특정 구조를 통합하는 액세스 시스템이 필요없다.
표시 신호의 수신 후에 사용자가 보다 많은 정보를 원한다면 사용자는 액세스 시스템으로의 명령을 통해 예를 들어 사용자 제어 키패드, 음성 명령, 마우스, 터치 패드, 터치 스크린, 또는 그밖의 입력을 통해 온라인 정보 공급자로의 액세스를 요청할 수도 있다. 이러한 명령의 수신시 액세스 시스템은 추출된 어드레스를 포함하는 신호의 전송을 통해 온라인 정보 공급자와의 디지털 통신 링크를 자동으로 설정한다. 이러한 통신 링크의 설정 즉시 액세스 시스템은 온라인 정보 공급자와의 대화식 통신이 가능하게 한다.

바람직한 실시예에서는 온라인 서비스 공급자를 액세스한 후에 액세스 시스템은 온라인 정보 공급자로부터 정보를 수신하고, 비디오 또는 오디오 재생 시스템 상에서의 재생을 위해 상기 정보를 처리한다. 예를 들어 이 정보는 텔레비젼 방송 신호를 대신하여, 별도의 컴퓨터 모니터나 기타 디스플레이 소자 상에 또는 픽쳐-인-픽쳐 포맷으로 텔레비젼 방송 신호와 함께 텔레비젼 스크린 상에 디스플레이될 수 있다. 이러한 방식으로 사용자는 온라인 정보 공급자로부터 입수가능한 관련정보 모두를 완전히 조사할 수 있다. 액세스 시스템에는, 비호환 시스템(incompatible system) 상에서의 디스플레이를 위해 수신된 정보 신호를 재배열(reformat)하는 예를 들어, 통상적인 텔레비젼 세트 상에서의 재생을 위해 디지털적으로 인코드된 비디오 신호를 아날로그 신호로 변환하는 하드웨어가 제공되는 것이 바람직하다. 상기 액세스 시스템에는 사용자 명령을 수신 및 처리하여 온라인 정보 공급자에게 전송하기 위한 하드웨어도 제공되어 사용자에게는 공급자와의 통신 처리(communication transaction)가 제공된다.
실시예
도 1에는 본 발명에 따른 온라인 서비스 액세스 시스템이 예시되어 있다. 도 1을 참조하면 온라인 서비스 액세스 시스템은 온라인 액세스를 제공하고 수신된 온라인 정보 신호를 액세스하는데 필요한 모든 소자(components)를 내장한 액세스 콘트롤러(10)를 포함하고 있다. 액세스 콘트롤러(10)는 방송, 케이블, 또는 미리 녹화된 매체 프로그램으로부터의 전자 신호(12)를 비디오 신호원(video signal source; 14)으로부터의 통상적인 형태로 수신하도록 구성되어 있다. 비디오 신호원(14)은 선택적 스위칭이 가능하므로 케이블이나 방송 비디오 입력(15)에 접속된 채널 선택부(16)로부터 또는 예를 들어 비디오 카셋트 레코더나 아날로그 또는 디지털 비디오 디스크 장치일 수도 있는 비디오 재생 시스템(18)으로부터의 출력을 공급할 수 있다. 채널 선택부(16)는 재생 시스템(18)과는 별도의 유닛에 또는 액세스 콘트롤러(10) 그 자체에 설치될 수도 있다. 이와 달리 액세스 콘트롤러(10)는 방송이나 케이블 비디오 소스로부터 수신되는 또는 기저대역(baseband)으로 하향변환된 무선 주파수의 프로그램 신호를 수신하여 디코드하도록, 예를 들어 비디오 카세트 레코더나 디지털 비디오 디스크 장치의 프론트 엔드 수신 회로(front end receiving circuitry)로 구성될 수 있다. 액세스 콘트롤러(10)에 의해 제공되는 기능과 결과는 여러 이용가능한 재생 시스템 중 어떤 것이 접속되는 것과는 무관하다. 즉, 그 접속되는 시스템이 아날로그 혹은 디지털 포맷이던지, 또는 그 재생 시스템이 비디오 테이프나 오디오 테이프 또는 디스크 매체에 대해 동작하는 것인지에 무관하다.
액세스 콘트롤러(10)는 주출력 신호선(36)을 통해 텔레비젼 세트와 같은 통상적인 재생 시스템(22)에 접속되며, 제2 출력 신호선(38)을 통해 컴퓨터 모니터와 같은 고해상도 재생 시스템(40)에 선택적으로 접속된다. 더욱이 액세스 콘트롤러(10)는 예를 들어 전화선, 동축케이블, 광섬유링크, 셀룰러, 무선전화, 위성링크 등의 정보 신호 운반체(information signal carrier;32)를 통해 공중(public) 또는 전용망(private network;30)에 접속된다. 오피스 망, 사내망 , 공중 인터넷 또는 회로 전환망(circuit-switched network) 등의 어느 전용(private) 또는 공중 지역망(public local area network)이나 광역망(wide area network)일 수도 있는 망(30)에 의하여, 복수의 온라인 정보 공급자(34a, 34b, 34c,...34n) 중 선택된 하나와 액세스 콘트롤러(10) 사이에 어드레스와 정보 신호가 라우팅(route)된다. 액세스 콘트롤러(10)는 온라인 정보 공급자로부터 망(30)을 통해, 비디오 또는 오디오 프로그램 내용을 갖는 정보 신호를 수신하고,적절한 통상적인 처리를 통해, 통상적인 프로그램 신호나, 표준 재생 시스템(22)이나 고해상도 재생 시스템(40) 상에서의 재생을 위한 고해상도 신호를 각각 공급한다.
도 2를 참조하여 액세스 콘트롤러(10)의 내부 구성을 설명한다. 액세스 콘트롤러(10)에는 전자 신호(12)를 수신하는 어드레스 추출기(42)가 제공된다. 어드레스 추출기(42)는 비디오 또는 오디오 프로그램 신호에 삽입되어 있는 어드레스를 검출하고, 디코드하여 저장하기 위한 하드웨어 및/또는 소프트웨어를 포함하고 있다. 아날로그 비디오 신호와 함께 전송된 어드레스 신호를 검출하기 위해 존재하는 방안 중에서 어드레스 추출기(42)는 통상적인 비디오 신호의 수직 귀선 소거 기간 동안 또는 다른 부분(vertical blanking interval or other portion of a conventional video signal) 동안 이미지 화질이 영향받지 않는 방식으로 전송되는 디지탈 신호를 검출하도록 구성될 수도 있다. 예를 들어 어드레스 신호는 수직 간격(vertical interval)과 같은 전자 신호의 일부동안에, 휘도(luminance)나 크로마 신호(chroma signals)의 변화를 통해 또는 휘도나 크로마 신호와 동조하여 전송될 수 있다. 어드레스 추출기(42)는 사용자의 선택시 온라인 서비스 공급자를 액세스하는데 이용하기 위한 검출된 어드레스를 레지스터나 메모리 디바이스(도시생략)를 통해 전기적으로 저장할 수 있도록 구성된다. 어드레스 신호는 추출된 어드레스 신호의 저장과 리프레싱이 매우 짧은 간격(intervals)으로 이루어지도록, 예를 들어 비디오 프로그램의 각 프레임 당 하나의 매우 짧은 간격 당 전송될 수도 있다. 이와 달리 어드레스 신호는 보다 긴 간격으로 즉, 추출된 어드레스 신호가 저장되는 길이(duration)가 보다 길도록 프로그램 내의 별개의 인터벌(discrete intervals)로 전송될 수도 있다.
비디오 또는 오디오 프로그램이 디지털적으로 인코드되는 경우에 어드레스 추출기(42)는 디지털적으로 인코드되는 비디오 또는 오디오 전자 신호(12)와 함께 수신되는 어드레스 신호를 검출하기 위한 몇몇 기존의 방식 중 어느 방식으로 구성될 수도 있다. 어드레스 추출기(42)의 구성에 대한 세부 사항은 널리 공지되어 있으므로 추가 설명은 생략하기로 한다.
어드레스 추출기(42)는 표시 신호 생성기(indicator signal generator, 46)쪽으로의 출력 접속을 가지고 있다. 표시 신호 생성기(46)는 프로그램에 관련된 보다 많은 정보가 이용가능함을 사용자에게 알리게 되고, 이러한 정보는 어드레스 추출기(42)가 전자 신호(12)로부터 어드레스를 디코드한 경우에 그 전자 어드레스를 통해 액세스 가능하다. 예를 들어 표시 신호 생성기(46)는 비디오 이미지(20)(예를 들어 화상 내의 화상, 로고, 또는 아이콘)가 시스템(22)의 재생시 비디오 프로그램 신호와 함께 디스플레이되도록 하여, 사용자에게 온라인 공급자의 어드레스가 저장되었으며 추가적인 정보가 이용가능함을 알려주게 된다. 이러한 가시적인 디스플레이 대신에 또는 이에 부가하여 표시 신호 생성기(46)는 액세스 콘트롤러(10)나 재생 시스템(22)의 외부 패널상에 위치한 라이트(24)나 기타 가시 표시기(visual indicator)를 작동시킴으로써 사용자에게 신호할 수도 있다. 이와 달리 표시 신호 생성기는 재생 시스템(22)의 스피커(26)에 음이 발생하도록 하거나 또는 액세스 콘트롤러(10)에 제공된 스피커(28)에 의해 음이 발생하도록 할 수도있다. 여기서 다시 표시 신호 생성기(46)의 설계는 공지되어 있다.
액세스 콘트롤러(10)에는 어드레스 추출기(42)에 의해 전자 신호(12)로부터 검출된 어드레스를 통해 온라인 정보 공급자에 직접 디지털 통신 링크(direct digital communication link)의 확립(establishment)을 자동적으로 개시시키는 사용자 명령을 수신하기 위한 사용자 입력 인터페이스(56)가 제공되어 사용자와 온라인 정보 공급자 간에 대화식 통신을 허용하게 된다. 통상적인 텔레비젼과 오디오 사운드 시스템과의 호환성 덕분에 여러 통상적인 입력 인터페이스들이 사용자 인터페이스(56)로의 사용에 적합하다는 것을 알 수 있다. 이러한 입력 인터페이스 중에는 유선 또는 무선 원격 사용자 제어로부터의 하나의 키나 복수의 키 시퀀스 입력을 디코드하는 적외선, 라디오 및 오디오 주파수 인터페이스가 있다. 사용자 입력 인터페이스(56)는 원격 사용자 제어부(remote user control) 상의 특수 목적 버튼(special purpose button)이 눌리는 경우를 검출하여 온라인 공급자의 저장된 어드레스가 자동적으로 검색되어 전송되도록 하는 응답신호를 공급하는 것이 바람직하다. 사용자 입력 인터페이스(56)는 키의 특별한 시퀀스(예를 들어 "ENTER", "ENTER", "+VOLUMN" 등의 시퀀스)가 통상적인 사용자 제어부 상에서 눌려진 경우를 검출하여 온라인 정보 공급자와의 대화식 통신을 가능하게 하도록 구성될 수도 있다. 이와 달리 사용자 입력 인터페이스(56)는 적절한 마이크로 컴퓨터형 사용자 인터페이스 예를 들어, 마우스, 터치패드, 터치스크린, 트랙볼, 조이스틱, 푸쉬버튼, 이레이저 헤드, 또는 그밖의 디바이스에 의해 구현될 수 있다. 사용자 인터페이스(56)는 모뎀(54)을 통하여 온라인 정보 공급자로의 디지털 정보 신호의 전송을제공하고 수신하도록 구성됨으로써, 온라인 공급자와의 대화식 사용자 액세스를 인에이블하여 상세한 정보 서치를 수행하고, 처리(transaction)를 수행하며, 액세스된 공급자에게 메시지를 전송하거나 게시할 수 있게 된다.
액세스 콘트롤러(10)에는 모뎀(54)이 설치되어 정보 신호 운반선(32)을 통해 액세스 콘트롤러(10)와 공중 스위칭망(30) 사이의 디지털 정보 신호를 전송 및 수신하게 된다. 모뎀(54)은 유입 정보 신호를 복조하여 비디오 및/또는 오디오 신호(38)를 추출하는 프로세서(58)에 출력시킨다. 바람직하게는 액세스 콘트롤러(10)는, 텔레비젼 신호 대신에, 텔레비젼 신호 위에 중첩되거나 (superimposed) 또는 사용자에 의해 제어되는 화상 내 화상 포맷(picture-in-picture format) 중 어느 하나의 방식으로 텔레비젼 세트와 같은 종래의 재생 시스템(22)에서 디스플레이하기 위해 비호환 신호(incompatible signal)를 조정하거나 변환하기 위한 신호 변환기(62)를 포함한다. 혹은, 프로세서(58)는 라인(38)의 비디오 신호를 컴퓨터 모니터와 같은 고해상도 재생 시스템(40)에 공급한다. 표시 신호 생성기(46)는 신호가 신호 변환기(62)의 출력에 나타날 때마다 주 출력 신호(primary output signal;36)를 자동으로 스위치 오프시키는 스위치(도시생략)도 내장하고 있다. 이러한 방법으로 온라인 정보 공급자로부터 수신된 정보 신호는 통상적으로 디스플레이되는 비디오 신호(36) 대신에 통상적인 재생 시스템(22)에 자동으로 디스플레이된다. (비록 전자 신호 라인(12)의 직접 접속이 가능하다 하기는 하지만) 프로세서(58)는 라인(55)을 통해 어드레스 추출기(42)로부터 출력된 입력 비디오 또는 오디오 전자 프로그램 신호를 수신할 수도 있다. 이러한 방법으로 프로세서(58)는 온라인 정보 공급자로부터 수신된 정보 신호와 함께 비디오 또는 오디오 신호에 대해 동작하도록 구성되어, 종래의 재생 시스템(22) 상에 디스플레이하는 경우 "화상 내 화상(picture within picture)" 신호를 생성하도록 할 수도 있다.
시스템의 동작을 설명한다. 예를 들어, 미리 녹화된 비디오 테이프나 아날로그 또는 디지털 비디오 디스크와 같은 재생 시스템(18) 또는 채널 선택부(16)로부터의 비디오 또는 오디오 프로그램으로부터의 신호와 같은 전자 신호(12)는, 전자 신호(12)의 비 디스플레이 부분 또는 귀선 소거 기간(blanking interval or non-displayed portion of electronic signal)동안 온라인 정보 공급자의 전자 어드레스를 나타내는 삽입된 신호를 포함하고 있으며, 어드레스 추출기(42)에 의해 수신된다. 만일 그런 어드레스가 삽입되어 있다면, 어드레스 추출기(42)는 신호(12)로부터 온라인 서비스 공급자의 디지털 어드레스를 검출해서 디코드하여 저장한다. 어드레스가 성공적으로 디코드되어 저장되면 어드레스 추출기(42)는 신호 라인(44)을 통해 표시 신호 생성기(46)를 활성화시킨다. 다음에 표시 신호 생성기(46)는 표시 신호를 생성하여 오버레이하거나 또는 그 신호가 통상적인 재생 시스템(22)에 의해 디스플레이되거나 또는 변환되도록 통상적인 프로그램 신호(36)로 인코드한다. 혹은, 표시 신호 생성기(46)는 예를 들어 광(24)을 조사하거나 또는 액세스 콘트롤러(10)의 스피커(28)에 음향을 발생시키는 등의 특별한 목적의 표시기를 작동시키는 라인(50) 상의 신호를 발생시킨다.
사용자가 온라인 정보 공급자를 액세스하기를 원한다면 사용자는 그러한 명령을 예를 들어 원격 제어 장치(remote control device)의 특수 버튼(special button)을 누름으로써 액세스 콘트롤러(10)에 제공한다. 원격 제어 장치는 명령 신호를 수신하는 사용자 인터페이스(56)에 명령 신호를 전송한다. 사용자 인터페이스(56)는 어드레스 추출기(42)에 인가되는 신호를 발생시켜 온라인 정보 공급자의 저장된 어드레스를 검색한다. 적절한 소프트웨어나 하드웨어의 제어 하에서 어드레스는 모뎀(54)을 거쳐 망(30)을 통해 온라인 정보 공급자, 예를 들어 34c에 전송된다.
일단 온라인 정보 공급자로의 액세스가 설정되면 액세스 콘트롤러(10)는 온라인 정보 공급자로부터 모뎀을 통해 디지털 정보 신호를 자동으로 수신한다. 수신된 정보 신호는 통상적인 TV 재생 시스템(22) 상에서 또는 컴퓨터 모니터나 기타 디스플레이 장치 등의 고해상도 시스템(40)에서의 재생을 위해 프로세서(58)에 의해 조작된다. 바람직하게는 통상적인 텔레비젼 세트 등의 종래의 재생 시스템(22) 상에서 바로 디스플레이될 수 없는 수신된 신호는, 디스플레이될 수 있도록 신호 변환기(62)에 의해 변환된다. 온라인 정보 공급자로부터 수신된 정보 신호는 통상적인 재생 시스템(22) 상에서 보통 디스플레이되는 비디오 신호 대신에 정지 또는 동화상으로서 디스플레이될 수도 있고, 또는 통상적인 재생 시스템(22) 상에 또는 컴퓨터 모니터(40)나 기타 디스플레이 장치 상의 통상적으로 디스플레이되고 있는 비디오 신호와 함께 "화상 내 화상" 부분으로서 디스플레이될 수도 있다.
액세스가 확립된 후에 사용자 인터페이스(56)를 통해 수신된 사용자 명령은 모뎀(54)을 통해 정보 신호로서 온라인 정보 공급자에 전송됨으로써 대화식 사용자액세스를 온라인 공급자에 제공하여 상세한 정보를 검색하도록 하고, 처리(transactions)를 수행하며, 온라인 접속을 통해 통상 수행될 수 있는 어느 다른 동작(actions)과 메시지를 액세스된 공급자에 전달하거나 우송한다.
본 발명의 또다른 실시예가 도 3에 도시되어 있다. 도 3은 이용가능한 컴퓨터(164)와 관련하여 작동되는 실시예를 나타내고 있다. 본 실시예에 있어서, 액세스 콘트롤러(110)는 내부 프로세서나 모뎀을 필요로 하지 않는데, 이는 부착된 컴퓨터에 의해 그러한 기능이 제공되기 때문이다. 더욱이, 컴퓨터(164)는 고해상도 재생 시스템(40)의 기능을 하는 모니터 및 오디오 재생 소자도 제공한다. 어드레스 추출기(142), 표시 신호 생성기(146), 및 액세스 콘트롤러(110)의 사용자 입력 인터페이스(156)는 디코드된 어드레스 출력과, 표시 신호, 및 사용자 명령을 각각 컴퓨터(164)에 공급하기 위해 출력 인터페이스(166)를 통해 접속된다. 다른 관점에서는 액세스 콘트롤러(110)가 전자 신호(12)를 수신하기 위해 접속되며, 통상적인 프로그램 신호(122)와 신호(150)를 상기한(도 2) 액세스 콘트롤러(10)에 대한 독립장치인 실시예(self-contained embodiment)에서와 유사한 방식으로 표시기(124)나 표시기(128)에 공급한다. 본 발명의 컴퓨터 지원 실시예(도 3)는 독립적인 실시예(도 1 내지 2)와 실질적으로 동일한 방식으로 작동하고 동일한 기능을 제공하므로 더이상의 추가 설명은 하지 않는다.
본 발명의 다른 실시예에 있어서 도 1 내지 3을 참조하면 망(30)으로의 접속은 모뎀(54)이나 컴퓨터(164)에 제공된 모뎀을 통해 액세스 콘트롤러(10)에 의해 지속적으로 유지된다. 비록 당업자라면 도 3에 도시된 액세스 콘트롤러에 따른 동작에 대해 요구되는 구조적인 변형을 용이하게 이해할 수도 있겠지만 도 2에 도시된 액세스 콘트롤러(10)를 참조하여 본 실시예를 설명한다. 본 실시예에서 어드레스 추출기(42)는 비디오나 오디오 프로그램 신호에 끼워진 온라인 정보 공급자 어드레스를 검출하여 디코드하지만 그 어드레스를 저장하지는 않는다.
본 발명의 상기 실시예에 설명된 바와 같이 어드레스 추출기(42)는 전자 신호 내의 온라인 정보 공급자 어드레스를 성공적으로 검출한 경우에는 표시 신호 생성기(46)에 신호를 공급한다. 어드레스 추출기(42)는 삽입된 어드레스를 검출하여 디코드한 후 그것을 모뎀(54)에 전달한다. 이어서 모뎀(54)은 온라인 정보 공급자로의 액세스를 개시시키는 사용자 명령을 먼저 수신한 경우에만 추출된 어드레스를 이용한다. 본 실시예는 온라인 정보 공급자 어드레스가 자주 또는 지속적으로 전송되는 비디오나 오디오 프로그램 신호와 사용될 수 있다는 것을 알 수 있다. 모뎀(54)에는 온라인 액세스를 개시시키라는 사용자 명령의 수신 이후 다음으로 수신되는 온라인 정보 공급자 어드레스와 연관된 온라인 정보 공급자와의 직접 디지털 통신 링크(direct digital communication link)를 자동으로 설정하는 하드웨어 및/또는 소프트웨어가 제공된다.
본 발명의 이러한 비어드레스(non-address) 저장 실시예의 동작예로서는 온라인 정보 공급자 어드레스를 포함하는 자주 전송되어 삽입되는 신호(frequently transmitted embedded signal)를 갖는 비디오나 오디오 프로그램 신호가 라인(12)을 통해 어드레스 추출기(42)에 의해 수신된다. 어드레스 추출기(42)는 온라인 정보 공급자 어드레스를 검출하여 디코드하지만 그것을 모뎀(54)에 전달하기 전에 저장하지는 않는다. 모뎀(54)은 액세스를 개시시키라는 사용자 명령이 사용자 인터페이스(56)로부터 먼저 수신되지 않는 한 온라인 정보 공급자 어드레스에 대해 아무것도 수행하지 않는다. 상기 사용자 명령이 수신되면 모뎀(54)은 다음 수신 어드레스(next received address)를 이용하여 망(30)으로 신호를 전송하며 온라인 정보 공급자와의 디지털 통신 링크를 확립한다. 비어드레스 저장 실시예(non address storing embodiment)의 기능과 동작은 본 발명의 기타 설명된 실시예와 동일하므로 더 설명하지는 않는다.
본 발명의 다른 실시예에서 온라인 정보 공급자로의 자동화된 직접 사용자 액세스는 표시 신호 생성기(46, 146(도 3))를 액세스 콘트롤러(10)에 포함시키지 않고 달성된다. 본 실시예에서 제작된 비디오 또는 오디오 프로그램은, 기본이 되는 전자 프로그램 신호(underlying electronic program signal)에 온라인 정보 공급자 어드레스가 존재하는 경우인 프로그램의 부분 동안에, 통상적인 재생 시스템(22) 및/또는 고해상도 재생 시스템(40)에 의해 자동으로 디스플레이되거나 소리가 나는(sounded), 로고나 메시지 같은, 시각적 또는 청각적 표시(visual or auditory indicator)를 포함하고 있다.
가시적이거나 청각적인 표시를 통해 사용자는 온라인 정보 공급자 어드레스의 이용가능성을 알게 된다. 따라서, 본 발명의 실시예에서 어드레스 추출기(42)는 온라인 정보 공급자로의 액세스를 개시시키는 사용자 명령을 수신한 후에만 삽입된 온라인 정보 공급자 어드레스(embedded online information provider address)를 검출 및 디코드하도록 하는 방식으로 구성되어 사용될 수도 있다. 당업자라면 본 발명의 실시예는 다른 측면에서는 상술한 본 발명의 다른 실시예에서 처럼 동작하며 추가로 상세히 설명할 필요성은 없다는 것을 알 수 있다.
바람직한 실시예를 참조하여 본 발명을 설명하고 예시하였지만 당업자라면 상술한 설명이나 예시에서의 변경이 본 발명의 취지와 범위를 벗어나지 않는 변형이나 상세에 대해 행해질 수도 있음을 이해할 것이다.
본원 발명에 따른 온라인 서비스 액세스 시스템과 방법은 전자 신호에 삽입된 어드레스를 통하여 온라인 정보 공급자로의 자동화된 직접 사용자 액세스를 제공함으로써, 온라인 서비스 사용자는 온라인 정보 공급자로 보다 정확하게 빠르게, 그리고 보다 용이하게 접속을 할 수 있으며, 디지털적으로 온라인 정보 공급자로부터 보다 많은 정보를 액세스하고 부가적인 자료를 쉽게 찾을 수 있다.

  1. 재생 장치(reproducing device) 및 신호원(signal source)과 접속하여 동작 가능하고, 통신 네트워크를 통하여 복수의 온라인 정보 공급자와 링크될 수 있는 상태에서 동작 가능한 액세스 콘트롤러로서, 통신 네트워크를 이용하여 온라인 정보 공급자 중 선택된 하나의 온라인 정보 공급자와 액세스 콘트롤러의 사용자 사이의 액세스를 제어하기 위한 액세스 콘트롤러에 있어서,
    상기 신호원으로부터 공급되고 상기 재생 장치로 전송되는 전자 신호 - 상기 전자 신호는 상기 재생 장치에 의해 나타내어지는 프로그램을 포함함 - 로부터 온라인 정보 공급자 중 선택된 하나의 온라인 정보 공급자의 어드레스 - 상기 어드레스는 상기 프로그램에 부가하여 상기 전자 신호에 삽입됨 - 를 추출하기 위한 어드레스 추출기;

  2. 제1항에 있어서,

    상기 링크 확립 수단은, 상기 메모리 장치에 저장된 상기 어드레스를 이용하여, 온라인 정보 공급자 중 상기 선택된 하나의 온라인 정보 공급자와의 디지털 통신 링크를 확립하는
    액세스 콘트롤러.
  3. 제1항에 있어서,
    상기 전자 신호는 온라인 정보 공급자 중 상기 선택된 하나의 온라인 정보 공급자 의 상기 어드레스를 자주 또는 연속적으로 (frequently or continuously) 전송하기 위하여 이용되고,
    상기 링크 확립 수단은, 상기 사용자 입력 인터페이스가 상기 사용자 명령을 수신한 후에, 상기 어드레스 추출기에 의하여 추출된 상기 어드레스를 이용하여, 온라인 정보 공급자 중 상기 선택된 하나의 온라인 정보 공급자와의 디지털 통신 링크를 확립하는
    액세스 콘트롤러.
  4. 재생 장치 및 신호원과 접속하여 동작 가능하고, 통신 네트워크를 통하여 복수의 온라인 정보 공급자와 링크될 수 있는 상태에서 동작 가능한 액세스 콘트롤러로서, 통신 네트워크를 이용하여 온라인 정보 공급자 중 선택된 하나의 온라인 정보 공급자와 액세스 콘트롤러의 사용자 사이의 액세스를 제어하기 위한 액세스 콘트롤러에 있어서,
    상기 신호원으로부터 공급되고 상기 재생 장치에 의해 나타내어지도록 하기 위해 전송되는 프로그램의 일부로서 제공되는 시각적 또는 청각적 표시(visual or auditory indicator)를 상기 재생 장치에 의하여 나타내는 것에 응답하여 사용자로부터 개시된 사용자 명령을 수신하기 위한 사용자 입력 인터페이스;
    상기 사용자 입력 인터페이스에 의해 상기 사용자 명령을 수신한 것에 응답하여, 상기 프로그램을 나타내는 전자 신호 - 상기 전자 신호에는 어드레스가 삽입됨 - 로부터 온라인 정보 공급자 중 선택된 하나의 온라인 정보 공급자의 어드레스를 추출하기 위한 어드레스 추출기;
    상기 어드레스 추출기에 의해 추출된 상기 어드레스를 이용하여, 온라인 정보 공급자 중 상기 선택된 하나의 온라인 정보 공급자와 디지털 통신 링크를 확립하기 위한 링크 확립 수단
    을 포함하는 액세스 콘트롤러.
  5. 제1항 내지 제4항 중 어느 한 항에 있어서,
    상기 어드레스 추출기는, 상기 재생 장치에 나타내어지는 프로그램에 대한 상기 전자 신호로부터, 사용자가 보고 있는 상기 비디오 프로그램의 콘텐트(content)와 관련된 부가적인 정보를 제공하도록 배치된 온라인 정보 공급자와 연관된 상기 어드레스를 추출하고,
    상기 링크 확립 수단은, 상기 추출된 어드레스를 이용하여, 사용자가 보고 있는 상기 비디오 프로그램의 콘텐트와 관련된 부가적인 정보를 제공하도록 배치된 상기 온라인 정보 공급자와 디지털 통신 링크를 확립하는
    액세스 콘트롤러.
  6. 제5항에 있어서,
    화상-내-화상(picture-in-picture) 형식으로 상기 비디오 프로그램과 함께 상기 부가적인 정보 - 상기 부가적인 정보는 상기 확립된 디지털 통신 링크를 통하여 상기 온라인 정보 공급자에 의해 제공됨 - 를 상기 재생 장치에 배열하기 위한 디스플레이 생성 수단을 더 포함하는 액세스 콘트롤러.
  7. 제1항 내지 제4항 중 어느 한 항에 있어서,
    상기 액세스 콘트롤러는 디지털 정보 신호를 송수신하기 위한 모뎀을 포함하는 컴퓨터와 연결하여 사용되고, 상기 모뎀은 상기 선택된 하나의 온라인 정보 공급자로의 액세스의 확립을 가능하게 하는
    액세스 콘트롤러.
  8. 제7항에 있어서,
    상기 컴퓨터는 모니터가 제공되고,
    상기 컴퓨터는 상기 모뎀을 통하여 상기 선택된 하나의 온라인 정보 공급자로부터 수신된 디지털 정보 신호를 상기 모니터 상에 디스플레이하는
    액세스 콘트롤러.
  9. 제1항 내지 제4항 중 어느 한 항에 있어서,
    디지털 정보 신호를 송수신하기 위한 모뎀 - 상기 모뎀은 상기 선택된 하나의 온라인 정보 공급자로의 액세스의 확립을 가능하게 함 -;
    상기 모뎀에 의해 수신되는 디지털 정보 신호를 처리하고, 상기 재생 장치 또는 다른 디스플레이 장치 상에 상기 수신된 디지털 정보 신호를 디스플레이하기 위한 프로세서를 더 포함하는 액세스 콘트롤러.
  10. 전자 신호에 의해 표현된 비디오 프로그램을 시청하는 시간에, 온라인 정보 서비스의 사용자에게 상기 전자 신호에 제공된 링크를 통하여 온라인 정보 공급자로의 직접 디지털 통신 액세스를 제공하는 방법에 있어서,
    상기 비디오 프로그램을 제공하는 단계;

    상기 표시 신호 생성기는, 상기 어드레스 추출기가 온라인 정보 공급자 중 선택된 하나의 온라인 정보 공급자의 어드레스를 추출하였음을 표시하는 표시 신호로서 라이트(light) 또는 스피커를 활성화시키는(activate)

  12. 제1항에 있어서,
