Abstract
Description
本出願は、2019年3月25日に出願された、米国仮特許出願番号第62/823,570号の優先権の利益を主張する。
ペルフルオロオクタンスルホネート(PFOS)及びペルフルオロオクタン酸(PFOA)、ならびに、数百種類の他の同様の化合物を含む、ペルフルオロアルキル及びポリフルオロアルキル物質(PFAS)は、多数の用途で、米国で幅広く使用されており、ヒトの健康及び環境へのリスクについての不確実性に関連する、広範囲にわたる汚染に起因する、非常に関連する懸念が存在する。既知のヒトの健康リスクがあるPFAS化合物の中には、自発的に徐々に廃止されたものもある(PFOA及びPFOS)一方で、受け継がれた汚染は残っている。更なる置き換えPFAS化合物は、その健康上のリスクの理解が限定的なままで導入されている。現在、PFOA及びPFOSのみが、連邦政府レベルで健康寿命勧告(Lifetime Health Advisories)で扱われており、飲料水中で、これら及び他のPFAS化合物の許容されるレベルを制御するための最大汚染レベル(MCL)は確立されていない。米国では、PFAS化学物質は今日まで、危険物質として列挙されておらず、水、汚れ、及び沈降物中でのPFAS汚染を監視及び制御するためのCERLCAプロセスの下での要件を定める。連邦政府の規制が現在存在しない中、汚れ及び地下水中でのPFASの存在の同定、ならびに、飲料水の処理に対しては、大部分の暴露評価及び緩和が制限されている。
● 活性炭が、部位に恒久的に、または半恒久的に固定された容器に含まれ、水(例えば、飲料水)処理が現場で行われ、PFAS濃縮物中のPFASが現場で焼却され(もしくは、別様においては破壊され)、または、廃棄場所にタンカートラックにより輸送される、現場のシステム(図1を参照のこと)からの活性炭の再生;
● GACが、水処理部位に輸送される容器に含まれ、水処理が現場で行われるトレーラー固定システム、及びPFAS濃縮物を用いる、活性炭の再生;
● 地下水、飲料水、またはエアーサンプリングとして反復使用のために再生可能な、受動性サンプリング装置で使用する、活性炭の再生;
● PlumeStop(商標)として使用する活性炭の再生;
● 地下水部位の改善/GAC処理/前処理で使用する活性炭の再生;
● 汚れコーティングとしてのin-situ配置の100日後、1年以上後(例えば、最大5年、または最大10年)で、PFAS及び他の汚染物質を吸着した後で場合により再生される、活性炭が、PFAS及び他の混合汚染物質で飽和する可能性があり、改善有効性を持続させるためにこれらの化学物質を放出する必要がある、任意の環境改善用途で使用する、活性炭の再生。
未使用の瀝青質石炭ベースの顆粒状活性炭(GAC)(Filtrasorb 400(F400),CalgonCarbon Corporation,Pittsburgh,PA USA)を、収着の動力学的実験のために使用した。GACは、メーカーにより提供される、947.8m2/gの表面積、0.58mL/Gの気孔体積、ならびに、6.01及び6.44L/Kgの、PFOA及びPFOSに対するlog Kd値を有する。
工程1-未使用のGACのバルクPFAS汚染(フィールド処理ユニットから消費されたGACをシミュレーションするため)
F-400 GACを、全ての実験で使用した。まず、100gのGACを秤量し、0.8LのPFOA及びPFOS溶液を含有するIL HDPE瓶(初期濃度は500ug/L)に添加した。サンプルを、エンドオーバーエンドテーブル上部回転振盪器で20日間振盪した。20日目にサンプリングをした後、水溶液を別の容器にデカントし、GACを真空下にて一晩空気乾燥させ、得られた、PFOA及びPFOSで汚染された乾燥GACを、GAC再生実験のために使用した。
実験室用研究を通して、Battelleは、PFASで汚染されているGACを再生するために使用可能な溶媒クラスを測定した。再生を成し遂げるために、1gのGACをカラムに配置し、5mLの溶媒を添加し、2分の接触時間を実施した後、バルブを開いて、溶媒を2~10分間、1滴ずつ流した。各サンプルについて、3つのかかる溶出液を個別に収集した。全ての溶出液を、3500rpmで10分間遠心分離にかけ、分析まで冷蔵した。塩基の濃度を0、0.5%、及び1%アンモニア(塩基)として、これらの実験を実施した。図2は、1%塩基での回収を示す。再生実験は周囲温度にて、撹拌を伴わず、固定床のGACを使用することで実施した。
工程3A:未使用のGACへの、PFAS吸着の収着動力学的実験
実験を、3通りの50mL PP遠心管で、初期のPFOSまたはPFOA濃度を150μg L-1で実施した(500uLの15ppm原液を添加した)。バックグラウンド電解質として0.01M NaClを使用する、5.0mg:50mLの溶液比率での吸着。PFOA/PFOS(初期濃度は150μg L-1)でスパイクした、50mLの0.01M NaCl溶液(GAC非含有)のみを含有する、別のセットの2通りの50mL PP遠心管を対照として使用する。50mLの0.01M NaCl溶液及びGACのみを含有する、50mL PP遠心管の2通りのサンプルを0日目に、対照液としてサンプリングする。サンプルを全て、オービタルシェーカーで室温(温度を記録)にて、約50rpmで回転させるか、または、適切な混合のために調節して、pH7.0で維持する。サンプリングは、0、2、5、12、及び20日目に実施した。各サンプリング時間において、5000gにて試験溶液を含有する遠心管を15分間、次いで0.25mLの上清をサンプリングし、0.25mLのメタノールで希釈してエッペンドルフチューブ(ポリプロピレン/ポリエチレン)に入れ、サンプル分析のために分析ラボに送った。
ラボで汚染したGACからの、PFOA及びPFOSの除去。表1及び図2に示すように、アルカリ性添加剤が、再生された溶媒に含まれるか否かにかかわらず、3種類のアルコール溶媒は、実験室で汚染したGACからPFOS及びPFOAを同様に除去することを、最初の等温線実験は示す。塩基添加剤が含まれない各アルコールに関して、PFOA及びPFOSの、再生溶媒への平均回収率は12%以下であり、大部分は標準偏差と重複しており、これらがお互いに有意差がないことを示した。0.5%及び1.0%の塩基添加剤を含むアルコール類に関しては、PFOA回収率(54%±4%)はPFOS(35%±7%)よりも高かったが、塩基が0.5%または1.0%の場合に、回収率に有意差はなかった。
最適な再生溶液を選択した後、収着動力学的実験を実施して、未使用及び再生されたGACでのPFAS吸着を測定した。図3は、PFOA及びPFOSが全て、最初の暴露から20日以内にGACに吸着された本実験の結果を示す。この結果は、以前に全く使用されていなかった(未使用の)GAC、及び、上述のとおりに一度再生されていたGACの両方に関して真であることが発見された。水相で測定した平均濃度は、吸着率は、未使用及び再生されたGACの両方で非常に類似していたことを示す。図4は、GAC上でのPFOA及びPFOSの濃度を含む、本実験の結果、したがって、PFOA及びPFOSの水性濃度の結果における、経時的な実験の減少と比較した、経時的な濃度増加を示す。2日目~20日目に、再生されたGACのGAC濃度が全て、対応する未使用のGACサンプルよりも有意に高いGAC濃度を有するため、未使用のGACと比較して、再生されたGACにおいては、吸着能力が増加し得ることを、図CCでのPFOA結果は示唆する。しかし、PFOSの結果に関して、2日目のサンプルのみが有意差のある結果となっており、結果がより不鮮明となっている。
再生溶媒及び添加剤の比率を更に同定するための、GAC再生-急速小規模カラム試験(RSSCT)
最良のPFAS除去溶媒及び添加剤組成物を選択するために、標準的な方法であるASTM D6586に基づく、急速小規模カラム試験(RSSCT)を、図5に示すように使用した。この標準的な方法は、水から可溶性PFASを吸着するために、再生したGACを評価するためのRSSCT法の概略を提供する。
5つのカラム(それぞれ再生溶液及び対照用)を、換気フード内でセットアップした。カラム(取り外し可能なポリプロピレンキャップ、及び、カラムの出口に固定された、20μm多孔率のHDPE床支持体を備える、ボロシリケートガラスバレルで構成される、Flex-Column(登録商標),Kimble)は、管材を接続するためのLuer-Lok(商標)を有した。カラムを、マニホールド(1/8インチの管材)を用いて平行にセットアップし、クランプでリングスタンドに固定した。個別の再生貯蔵容器をカラムに平行に繋ぎ、同時に実験を行った。各カラムに関して、ニードル弁を、流速を制御するために配管し、一方通行の1/8インチ逆止弁を、カラムの流出側で管材に取り付け、流量計を使用して流れを測定した。流入管材を、デジタルギアポンプ(Cole Parmer,Micro Pump GA Series)に接続した。圧力計を、カラムの流入側に取り付けた。カラムの設計基準、及び、RSSCTのベンチスケールデザインを表2に含める。
カラムを、同量の、PFOA及びPFOSを含む、PFAS・ラボ汚染(スパイク)GACでドライパックした。個別の再生貯蔵容器をカラムに個別に接続し、上向きにポンプを駆動して、表2にある異なる再生配合物を、PFAS含有GACに導入した。4つの溶媒/添加剤の組み合わせのそれぞれに関して、2通りのカラムをセットアップした。再生溶媒をカラムに2時間通し、サンプルを4つの異なる時点(10、25、45、及び65分)で、PFAS分析のために、15mLのポリプロピレン遠心管に収集した。カラムを更に1時間運転し、溶出液を個別に、250mLのHDPEボトルに収集した(120分サンプル)。対照カラムもまた、汚染されていないGACを用いてセットアップし、バックグラウンド濃度レベルを確認した。各試薬/すすぎ水溶液のサンプルを収集し、パックしてNorwell,MA実験室に運搬した。この実験室でPFAS濃度を測定し、各再生溶液の相対的な有効性を測定した。ラボで汚染したGAC(処理前後)もまた送達して抽出及び分析し、吸着したPFASの量を見いだした。
エタノールにより、0~10分で除去が増加した(>85%)ため、エタノール及び0.5%NH4OHを溶媒系として選択した。これらの測定値周辺の大きなエラーバー、及び、溶出サンプルでの比較的低い濃度(伝播した誤差の相対的な不確実性を増加させる)が原因で、65~120分の溶出において、PFOA/PFOSが大きく寄与したことは、さほど懸念事項ではなかった。この溶媒最適化の質量バランスにより、約100%の質量バランス(見かけの前処理PFOA/PFOS濃度を用いる場合)が明らかとなり、測定したGAC抽出濃度を使用するときは、120~130%であった。
試験条件下で、PFOA及びPFOSが、未使用または再生したGACのいずれかを通って流れることは、本質的な完全な取り込みを示した(表5を参照のこと)。とても驚くべきことに、図10及び表6に示すように、再生された活性炭は、実質的に優れたPFOA、及び特にPFOSの脱着を示した。取り込み実験の間、64μmolのPFOA、及び41μmolのPFOSを未使用のGAC(2通りのカラムA及びB)に装填した。再生後、およそ5μmolのPFOA、及び20μmolのPFOSを各カラムに保持した。次に、52μmolのPFOA、及び32μmolのPFOSを、最初の再生から残っている同一のGACに装填した。再生前に当該GACを抽出すると、カラムBではわずか26μmolのPFOA、及び20μmolのPFOSが測定された。割合を占めるのは、装填されたPFOAの半分未満であり、装填されたPFOSは全く割合を占めなかったことを、この結果は示し、このことは、捨てられた誤ったデータポイントをもたらす実験エラーがあることを示している。したがって、カラムBは、再生されたGAC内での、除去されたPFOA及びPFOSの割合に含まれていたのみである(したがって、エラーバーを欠いていた)。
手順:
溶出溶媒を蒸留して、PFASで汚染された廃棄物を濃縮し、更なる再生サイクルのために溶媒をリサイクルすることは、GAC再生プロセスの効率を維持する重要な工程である。(最終的な廃棄のための)再生蒸留、及び、PFASで汚染された廃棄物汚染の可能性を示すため、2フィールドの、GAC再生溶媒(エタノール+1%水酸化アンモニウム)からの溶媒溶出液を使用して、蒸留実験を行った。PFAS含有再生物を蒸留装置(加熱マントル、リザーバフラスコ、冷却管、及び留出液収集容器)に配置し、加熱して煮沸し、元の体積が開始体積の10%以下にまで減少するまで維持した。サンプルを留出液、及び残りの、PFAS含有再生物から収集し、PFAS化合物が、溶媒と共に蒸留を受けやすいか否か(そして、どの化合物が受けやすいか)を測定した。
Claims (21)
- ポリフルオロアルキル物質(PFAS)及び/またはペルフルオロオクタンスルホネート(PFOS)により汚染された活性炭の再生方法であって、
吸着されたポリフルオロアルキル物質(PFAS)及び/またはペルフルオロオクタンスルホネート(PFOS)を有する活性炭を提供することと、
前記活性炭を、少なくとも50質量%のアルコール、及び少なくとも0.2質量%の塩基を含む溶液中で接触させることと、
前記溶液から前記活性炭を分離することと、
を含む、前記方法。 - ポリフルオロアルキル物質(PFAS)及び/またはペルフルオロオクタンスルホネート(PFOS)により汚染された活性炭の再生方法であって、
吸着されたポリフルオロアルキル物質(PFAS)及び/またはペルフルオロオクタンスルホネート(PFOS)を有する活性炭を提供することと、
前記活性炭を、少なくとも50質量%のアルコール、及び少なくとも0.5質量%の塩基を含む溶液中で接触させることと、
前記溶液から前記活性炭を分離することと、
を含む、前記方法。 - 前記溶液から分離されている前記活性炭をすすぐことを更に含む、先行請求項のいずれかに記載の方法。
- 前記接触工程が、少なくとも1分、または少なくとも2分、または少なくとも10分、または少なくとも100分、または1~1000分の間実施される、先行請求項のいずれかに記載の方法。
- 得られた活性炭が、未使用の活性炭と比較して、(実施例の収着法で測定すると)PFOS及び/またはPFOAを同一でまたは優れて吸着する、先行請求項のいずれかに記載の方法。これは図2に示す。
- 前記得られた活性炭が、2日間PFASに暴露した後で前記未使用の活性炭と比較すると、(実施例の収着法で測定すると)PFOS及び/またはPFOAを優れて吸着する、先行請求項のいずれかに記載の方法。
- 前記得られた活性炭が、前記未使用の活性炭と比較して、(実施例の収着法で測定すると)PFOS及び/またはPFOAを同一でまたは優れて脱着する、先行請求項のいずれかに記載の方法。これは図2に示す。
- 前記得られた活性炭が、2日間PFASに暴露した後で前記未使用の活性炭と比較すると、(実施例の収着法で測定すると)PFOS及び/またはPFOAを優れて脱着する、先行請求項のいずれかに記載の方法。
- 前記活性炭から分離された前記溶液が、好ましくは同じ部位で、蒸留して、リサイクルして再使用されて活性炭を再生するアルコール溶液を生成する、先行請求項のいずれかに記載の方法。
- 前記接触工程が浸漬、すすぎ、及び/または吹付けを含む、先行請求項のいずれかに記載の方法。
- 前記接触工程が、前記活性炭の体積に少なくとも等しい体積の溶液で、少なくとも3回すすぐことを含む、先行請求項のいずれかに記載の方法。好ましくは、各すすぎの間には少なくとも2分ある。
- 前記溶液が、少なくとも60、70、80、90、または95質量%のアルコールを含む、先行請求項のいずれかに記載の方法。
- 前記アルコールがメタノール、エタノール、プロパノール、及びこれらの組み合わせから選択される、先行請求項のいずれかに記載の方法。
- 前記活性炭が石炭に由来する顆粒状活性炭である、先行請求項のいずれかに記載の方法。
- 前記活性炭が、地下に配置され、PFASを含む地下水に暴露された顆粒状活性炭である、先行請求項のいずれかに記載の方法。
- バッチプロセスで実施される、請求項2に記載の方法。
- 前記活性炭が、前記アルコール及び塩基溶液の流れの中で再生される、先行請求項のいずれかに記載の方法。
- 前記再生された活性炭が、同一条件下で、または、実施例に記載する条件下で、未使用の活性炭と比較して少なくとも10%高い、PFOAまたはPFOSの脱着を有する、先行請求項のいずれかに記載の方法。
- PFASで汚染された水からPFASを除去する方法であって、前記PFASで汚染された水を活性炭に通して、PFASで汚染された活性炭を形成することと、その後、前記PFASで汚染された炭素を、先行請求項のいずれかに記載の方法を使用して再生することと、を含む、前記方法。
- 先行請求項のいずれかにより再生された活性炭。
- 活性炭を再生するためのシステムであって、
入口及び出口を有する、活性炭を含む容器と、
前記容器の前記出口に接続された蒸留カラムと、を含み、
