好ましいマグネシウム含有清浄剤には、マグネシウムスルホネート、マグネシウムフェネートおよびマグネシウムサリチレートが含まれ、とりわけマグネシウムスルホネートが含まれる。
分散剤により、油に不溶性であるエンジン運転期間中の酸化から生じる様々な物質が懸濁状態で維持され、そのため、スラッジの凝集および沈殿または金属部品表面での付着が防止される。本明細書中において有用である分散剤には、ガソリンエンジンおよびディーゼルエンジンで使用されたときに付着物の形成を軽減するために効果的であることが知られている窒素含有の無灰(金属非含有)分散剤が含まれる。

本明細書中に開示される潤滑油組成物は、潤滑油を作製するための当業者に知られているどのような方法によってでも調製することができる。いくつかの実施形態において、基油を、本明細書中に記載されるジルコニウム含有化合物とブレンドまたは混合することができる。必要な場合には、1つまたは複数の他のものを加えることができる。添加剤が基油に個別に、または同時に加えられる場合がある。いくつかの実施形態において、添加剤が基油に個別に1回または複数回の添加で加えられ、その際の添加はどのような順序であってもよい。他の実施形態において、添加剤が、必要な場合には添加剤高濃度物の形態で、基油に同時に加えられる。いくつかの実施形態において、添加剤を基油に可溶化することが、混合物を約25℃〜約200℃の温度に、約50℃〜約150℃の温度に、または約75℃〜約125℃の温度に加熱することによって助けられる場合がある。

(d)炭酸エチレン処理分散剤およびホウ素化スクシンイミド分散剤;
(e)アルキル化ジフェニルアミン型抗酸化剤;
(f)慣行量(conventional amount)の流動点降下剤;
(g)エチレンプロピレンに基づく粘度指数改善剤;
(h)モリブデンスクシンイミド抗酸化剤;
(i)泡抑制剤;ならびに
(j)残余量のグループI基油。
TBNが397であり、Mg含有量が9.6%wtである高過塩基性マグネシウムスルホネートを除いて、実施例1を繰り返した。
高過塩基性カルシウムスルホネートおよびさらなる高過塩基性マグネシウムスルホネートを配合物に加え、、下記において表2に示される値が得られるようにしたことを除いて、実施例1を繰り返した。
過塩基性マグネシウムスルホネートを実施例1から除き、下記において表2に示される値になる様な量の高過塩基性カルシウムスルホネートと置き換えた。
