Description
[液晶表示装置の構成]
図1は、本実施形態の液晶表示装置を模式的に示している。液晶表示装置10は、液晶表示モジュール130及び面状光源装置133を含む。液晶表示モジュール130は、液晶パネル131、液晶パネルを駆動する駆動回路137及び制御装置110を含む。図1の構成例において、液晶パネル131は、カラー表示を行うカラー液晶パネルである。液晶パネル131において、画素141は、隣接する赤(R)、緑(G)、青(B)の3色の副画素で構成される。

図12は、液晶パネル131の他の構成例を示す。図2及び6を参照して説明した構成例において、X軸に沿って隣接するカラーフィルタの端面は接触している。図12に示す構成例は、隣接するカラーフィルタの間に無色透明な領域を含む。これにより、高駆動電圧におけるIPS駆動領域235を通過する光の輝度を高めることができる。
上記実施形態は、直視型の液晶表示装置を説明しているが、本明細書の特徴は、投影型液晶表示装置に適用することができる。直視型液晶表示装置において、ブラックマトリックスを削除し、データ線を透明化することは、斜めから見た場合の混色の影響が強くなり得る。投影型液晶表示装置は、投影面において投影画像を表示するため、画像を斜めから見た場合の色度変化の影響を小さくすることができる。また、ブラックマトリックスを削除する又はデータ線を透明化することは、光源からの光の吸収を抑制し、投影型液晶パネルの温度上昇を効果的に抑制できる。

前記液晶パネルは、
素子基板と、
対向基板と、
前記素子基板と前記対向基板との間のネガ型液晶材料の液晶層と、を含み
前記素子基板は、
第1絶縁性基板と、
前記第1絶縁性基板上の配向膜と、
前記第1絶縁性基板上の共通電極と、
前記第1絶縁性基板上で、前記共通電極と前記配向膜との間の複数の画素電極と、
前記複数の画素電極と前記共通電極との間の層間絶縁膜と、
を含み、
前記対向基板は、
第2絶縁性基板と、
前記第2絶縁性基板上の、前記複数の画素電極それぞれに対向するカラーフィルタと、
を含み、
前記駆動回路は、前記共通電極の電位を基準として、第1軸に沿って隣接する画素電極に対して逆極性の画素電位を与え、
前記複数の画素電極の各画素電極は、複数の直線状部を含み、
前記複数の直線状部それぞれと前記共通電極との間の電界が前記ネガ型液晶材料に与えられ、
前記隣接する画素電極の一方の画素電極の直線状部と、前記隣接する画素電極の他方の画素電極の直線状部との間の電界が、前記ネガ型液晶材料に与えられ、
前記対向基板は、前記隣接する画素電極の前記直線状部の間の第1領域と対向する第2領域を含み、
前記第1領域を通過する可視光域の少なくとも一部の波長域の光は、前記第2領域を通過し、
前記複数の画素電極の各画素電極の前記複数の直線状部の、前記配向膜による前記液晶層の初期配向方向と垂直な軸に対する角度の大きさは共通であり、
