Abstract
【解決手段】反射光の中心波長が互いに異なる2種類以上のコレステリック配向された液晶領域を含む単一層の液晶層を有し、ヘイズが5%以上である、液晶フィルム。前記液晶領域は、反射光の中心波長が400nm〜500nmである第1領域、反射光の中心波長が500nm〜600nmである第2領域及び反射光の中心波長が600〜700nmである第3領域を含む。

図2は、上記CLC層2を抽象的に図式した模式図であって、CLC層2の1つの主表面21側から他の主表面22側方向に反射光の中心波長が赤色(Red)光の範疇に属するCLC領域231、緑色(Green)光の範疇に属するCLC領域232及び青色(Blue)光の範疇に属するCLC領域233が順次に配置された例示を示す。
通常的にCLC領域は、螺旋形で回転しているCLC分子を含み、CLC分子の導波器、例えば、CLC分子の長軸の螺旋軸は、CLC層の厚さ方向に対して平行になるように整列するようになる。CLC領域は、図3のAに示されたように、CLCの螺旋軸HAが、CLC層の厚さ方向31と平行に配向されることが一般的である。図3で厚さ方向31と垂直な方向32は、例えば、前述したような基材の面方向を意味することができる。本明細書において上記のように螺旋軸がCLC層の厚さ方向と平行な状態に配向されているCLC領域は、プランナー(planar)配向されたCLC領域として呼称されることができる。

[発明を実施するための形態]
LC組成物は、Merck社から入手することができるCLC混合物であるRMM856をトルエン及びシクロヘキサノンの混合溶媒(重量の比率=7:3(トルエン:シクロヘキサノン))に固形分が40重量%程度になるように溶解させた後に、均一な溶液の形成のために60℃で約1時間加熱した後、充分に冷却して製造した。
(液晶フィルムの製造)
基材層として、PET(poly(ethylene terephthalate)、MRL38、Mitsubishi社製)基材の一面に300Wattの条件で5秒間コロナ処理を行い、親水性表面が形成された基材層を製造した。上記PET基材の水に対する濡れ角は、約60度程度であり、上記紫外線の照射を通じて親水性表面の水に対する濡れ角が約30度〜40度になるように調節した。次いで、上記基材層の親水性表面上にCLC組成物Aをワイヤバーでコーティングし、100℃で2分間乾燥させて、厚さが約5μmである液晶層を形成した。その後、約60℃の温度で乾燥したコーティング層に波長が紫外線の照射装備(TLK40W/10R、Philips社製)で350nm〜400nm程度の範囲内の紫外線を照射し、キラル剤の濃度勾配を誘導した(光量:約100mJ/cm2)。濃度勾配を誘導した後、さらに紫外線の照射装備(Fusion UV、400W)で組成物が充分に硬化されるように紫外線を照射し、コーティング層を重合させてCLC層を形成し、液晶フィルムを製造した。上記のように製造された液晶フィルムに対して、SEPUNG社のヘイズメーターHR−100を使用してヘイズを測定した結果、約10%程度のヘイズを示した。
上記製造された液晶フィルムのCLC層をλ/4波長層と付着し、反射型偏光板を製造した。λ/4波長層としては、TAC基材の一面に配向膜及び液晶層が順に形成されているλ/4波長層を使用し、上記λ/4波長層の液晶層をCLC層と粘着剤で付着し、反射型偏光板を製造した。
コロナ処理が行われないPET基材を使用したことを除いて、実施例1と同一の方式で液晶フィルム及び反射型偏光板を製造した。上記製造された液晶フィルムに対して、SEPUNG社のヘイズメーターHR−100を使用してヘイズを測定した結果、約2%程度のヘイズを示した。
Axometrics社のAxoScan機器を使用し、実施例1及び比較例1で製造された液晶フィルムの広帯域反射特性を確認し、その結果を図14及び図15にそれぞれ添付した。図14は、実施例1の結果、図15は、比較例1の結果を示し、各図面でx軸は、波長を示し、y軸は、透過率を示す。また、図14及び15で"0"で表示された線は、正面で測定した結果であり、"55"で表示された線は、55度の傾斜角で測定した結果である。図14及び図15の結果から実施例では、正面及び傾斜角で安定的な広帯域特性を示すことを確認することができる。
製造された反射型偏光板のCLC層側に光源を照射しながら、上記CLC層を透過して出た光のCIEのx及びy数値をEldim社のEZ Contrast装備を利用して製造社のマニュアルによって測定し、下記に記載した。

- 反射光の中心波長が互いに異なる2種類以上のコレステリック配向された液晶領域を含む単一層の液晶層を有し、ヘイズが5%以上である、液晶フィルム。
- 前記液晶領域は、反射光の中心波長が400nm〜500nmである第1領域、反射光の中心波長が500nm〜600nmである第2領域及び反射光の中心波長が600〜700nmである第3領域を含む、請求項1に記載の液晶フィルム。
- 前記液晶領域は、コレステリック液晶分子の導波器の螺旋軸が液晶層の厚さ方向と平行するように形成されている液晶領域と、上記螺旋軸が液晶層の厚さ方向と平行しないように形成されている液晶領域とを含む、請求項1または2に記載の液晶フィルム。

- 液晶パネルと上記液晶パネルの一側に配置された光源を含み、前記光学素子が上記液晶パネルと光源との間に配置されている、請求項18に記載の液晶表示装置。
- 前記光学素子は、液晶フィルムがλ/4波長層に比べて光源が近く位置するように配置されている、請求項19に記載の液晶表示装置。
