Description
本実施の形態では、本発明の一態様の発光素子について図1〜図3を用いて説明する。
図2(A)に示す比較例の発光素子300は、第1の電極301と、第1の電極301上に設けられたEL層303と、EL層303上に設けられた第2の電極305と、を有する。第1の電極301及び第2の電極305は、一方が陽極として機能し、他方が陰極として機能する。本実施の形態では、第1の電極301が陽極として機能し、第2の電極305が陰極として機能する。
一方、本発明の一態様の発光素子では、3つの発光層のうち、最も短波長の発光を呈する燐光性化合物を含む発光層と、最も長波長の発光を呈する燐光性化合物を含む発光層とが隣り合うように積層する。また、本発明の一態様の発光素子では、3つの発光層それぞれで、キャリアの再結合が行われる。
以下に、それぞれの層に用いることができる材料を例示する。なお、発光層以外の各層は、単層構造であっても、二層以上の積層構造であってもよい。
陽極として機能する電極は、導電性を有する金属、合金、導電性化合物等を1種又は複数種用いて形成することができる。特に、仕事関数の大きい(4.0eV以上)材料を用いることが好ましい。例えば、インジウムスズ酸化物(ITO:Indium Tin Oxide)、珪素もしくは酸化珪素を含有したインジウムスズ酸化物、インジウム亜鉛酸化物、酸化タングステン及び酸化亜鉛を含有した酸化インジウム、グラフェン、金、白金、ニッケル、タングステン、クロム、モリブデン、鉄、コバルト、銅、パラジウム、チタン、又は金属材料の窒化物(例えば、窒化チタン)等が挙げられる。また、銀、銅、アルミニウム、チタン等をナノワイヤ状(もしくは線状、細線状)に形成し、その上に導電性物質(導電性有機材料やグラフェンなど)を、塗布法又は印刷法等によって形成することで電極を形成してもよい。
陰極として機能する電極は、導電性を有する金属、合金、導電性化合物などを1種又は複数種用いて形成することができる。特に、仕事関数が小さい(3.8eV以下)材料を用いることが好ましい。例えば、元素周期表の第1族又は第2族に属する元素(例えば、リチウム、セシウム等のアルカリ金属、カルシウム、ストロンチウム等のアルカリ土類金属、マグネシウム等)、これら元素を含む合金(例えば、Mg−Ag、Al−Li)、ユーロピウム、イッテルビウム等の希土類金属、これら希土類金属を含む合金、アルミニウム、銀等を用いることができる。
上記の通り、本実施の形態の発光素子は、3種類の発光層を有し、各発光層は、燐光性化合物とホスト材料を含む。
正孔輸送層202は、正孔輸送性の物質を含む層である。
電子輸送層204は、電子輸送性の物質を含む層である。
正孔注入層201は、正孔注入性の物質を含む層である。
電子注入層205は、電子注入性の物質を含む層である。
正孔注入層もしくは電子注入層を構成する電荷発生領域や、電荷発生領域107は、正孔輸送性の物質に電子受容体(アクセプター)が添加された構成であっても、電子輸送性の物質に電子供与体(ドナー)が添加された構成であってもよい。また、これらの両方の構成が積層されていてもよい。
本実施の形態では、本発明の一態様の発光装置について図4及び図5を用いて説明する。本実施の形態の発光装置は、本発明の一態様の発光素子を有する。該発光素子の寿命は長いため、信頼性の高い発光装置を実現できる。
発光素子からの光を取り出す側の基板には該光を透過する材料を用いる。例えば、ガラス、石英、セラミック、サファイア、有機樹脂などの材料を用いることができる。また、フレキシブルな発光装置の基板には可撓性を有する材料を用いる。
支持基板と発光素子の間や支持基板とトランジスタの間に、絶縁膜を形成してもよい。絶縁膜は、酸化シリコン、窒化シリコン、酸化窒化シリコン、窒化酸化シリコンなどの無機絶縁材料を用いて形成できる。特に、トランジスタや発光素子への水分等の侵入を抑制するため、酸化シリコン膜、窒化シリコン膜、酸化アルミニウム膜等の透水性の低い絶縁膜を用いることが好ましい。同様の目的や材料で、トランジスタや発光素子を覆う絶縁膜を設けてもよい。
本発明の一態様の発光装置は、実施の形態1に示した発光素子を1以上有する。
隔壁には、有機樹脂又は無機絶縁材料を用いることができる。有機樹脂としては、例えば、ポリイミド樹脂、ポリアミド樹脂、アクリル樹脂、シロキサン樹脂、エポキシ樹脂、又はフェノール樹脂等を用いることができる。無機絶縁材料としては、酸化シリコン、酸化窒化シリコン等を用いることができる。隔壁の作製が容易となるため、特に感光性の樹脂を用いることが好ましい。
補助配線は必ずしも設ける必要は無いが、電極の抵抗に起因する電圧降下を抑制できるため、設けることが好ましい。
発光装置の封止方法は限定されず、例えば、固体封止であっても中空封止であってもよい。例えば、ガラスフリットなどのガラス材料や、二液混合型の樹脂などの常温で硬化する硬化樹脂、光硬化性の樹脂、熱硬化性の樹脂などの樹脂材料を用いることができる。発光装置は、窒素やアルゴンなどの不活性な気体で充填されていてもよく、PVC(ポリビニルクロライド)樹脂、アクリル樹脂、ポリイミド樹脂、エポキシ樹脂、シリコーン樹脂、PVB(ポリビニルブチラル)樹脂、EVA(エチレンビニルアセテート)樹脂等の樹脂で充填されていてもよい。また、樹脂内に乾燥剤が含まれていてもよい。
光取り出し構造としては、半球レンズ、マイクロレンズアレイ、凹凸構造が施されたフィルム、光拡散フィルム等を用いることができる。例えば、基板上に上記レンズやフィルムを、該基板又は該レンズもしくはフィルムと同程度の屈折率を有する接着剤等を用いて接着することで、光取り出し構造を形成することができる。
本発明の一態様の発光装置はトランジスタを有していてもよい。トランジスタの構造は限定されず、トップゲート型のトランジスタを用いてもよいし、逆スタガ型などのボトムゲート型のトランジスタを用いてもよい。また、nチャネル型トランジスタを用いても、pチャネル型トランジスタを用いてもよい。また、トランジスタに用いる材料についても特に限定されない。例えば、シリコンやIn−Ga−Zn系金属酸化物等の酸化物半導体をチャネル形成領域に用いたトランジスタを適用することができる。
本実施の形態では、本発明の一態様を適用した発光装置を用いた電子機器及び照明装置の一例について、図6及び図7を用いて説明する。
まず、ガラス基板上に、酸化珪素を含むインジウム錫酸化物(ITSO)膜をスパッタリング法にて成膜し、第1の電極1101を形成した。なお、その膜厚は110nmとし、電極面積は2mm×2mmとした。ここで、第1の電極1101は、発光素子の陽極として機能する電極である。
比較発光素子2は、発光層(第1の発光層1113a、第2の発光層1113b、及び第3の発光層1113c)以外は発光素子1と同様に作製した。以下では比較発光素子2の発光層の作製方法を説明する。
まず、発光素子1と同様に、ガラス基板上に、第1の電極1101、正孔注入層1111、正孔輸送層1112を形成した。
上記実施例で用いたトリス{2−[5−(2−メチルフェニル)−4−(2,6−ジメチルフェニル)−4H−1,2,4−トリアゾール−3−イル−κN2]フェニル−κC}イリジウム(III)(略称:[Ir(mpptz−dmp)3])の合成方法について説明する。
まず、ベンゾイルヒドラジン15.0g(110.0mmol)、N−メチル−2−ピロリジノン(NMP)75mlを300ml三口フラスコに入れ、氷冷下で攪拌した。この混合溶液にo−トルイル酸クロリド17.0g(110.0mmol)とNMP15mlの混合溶液をゆっくり滴下した。滴下後、室温で24時間攪拌した。所定時間反応後、この反応溶液を水500mlにゆっくり加えると、白色固体が析出した。析出した固体を水と1M塩酸で交互に超音波洗浄した。その後、ヘキサンで超音波洗浄を行い、N−ベンゾイル−N’−2−メチルベンゾイルヒドラジドの白色固体を19.5g、収率70%で得た。ステップ1の合成スキームを下記(a−1)に示す。
次に、上記ステップ1で得たN−ベンゾイル−N’−2−メチルベンゾイルヒドラジド12.0g(47.2mmol)、トルエン200mlを500ml三口フラスコに入れた。この混合溶液に五塩化リン19.4g(94.4mmol)を加え、120℃で6時間加熱攪拌した。所定時間反応後、反応溶液を水200mlにゆっくりと注ぎ、1時間攪拌した。攪拌後、有機層と水層を分離し、有機層を水及び飽和炭酸水素ナトリウム水溶液で洗浄した。洗浄後、有機層を無水硫酸マグネシウムで乾燥させた。この混合物から自然ろ過により硫酸マグネシウムを除去し、ろ液を濃縮することで、[クロロ(2−メチルフェニル)メタノン][クロロ(フェニル)メチリデン]ヒドラゾンの褐色液体を12.6g、収率92%で得た。ステップ2の合成スキームを下記(a−2)に示す。
次に、上記ステップ2で得た[クロロ(2−メチルフェニル)メタノン][クロロ(フェニル)メチリデン]ヒドラゾン12.6g(43.3mmol)、2,6−ジメチルアニリン15.7g(134.5mmol)、N,N−ジメチルアニリン100mlを500mlナスフラスコに入れ、120℃で20時間加熱攪拌した。所定時間反応後、この反応溶液を1N塩酸200mlにゆっくり加えた。この溶液にジクロロメタンを加え有機層に目的物を抽出した。得られた有機層を水、炭酸水素ナトリウム水溶液で洗浄し、硫酸マグネシウムで乾燥させた。自然ろ過により硫酸マグネシウムを除去し、得られたろ液を濃縮し、黒色の液体を得た。この液体をシリカゲルカラムクロマトグラフィーにより精製した。展開溶媒は酢酸エチル:ヘキサン=1:5とした。得られたフラクションを濃縮し、白色固体を得た。この固体を酢酸エチルにより再結晶を行い、Hmpptz−dmpの白色固体を4.5g、収率31%で得た。ステップ3の合成スキームを下記(a−3)に示す。
次に、上記ステップ3で得たHmpptz−dmp2.5g(7.4mmol)、トリス(アセチルアセトナト)イリジウム(III)0.7g(1.5mmol)を高温加熱容器に入れ、脱気した。この反応容器内を、内部をArフローしながら250℃で48時間加熱攪拌した。所定時間反応後、得られた固体をジクロロメタンで洗浄し、不溶物の緑色固体を吸引ろ過により得た。この固体をトルエンに溶解させ、アルミナとセライト(和光純薬工業株式会社、カタログ番号:531−16855)の積層を通してろ過した。得られたフラクションを濃縮し、緑色固体を得た。この固体をトルエンで再結晶を行い、緑色粉末を0.8g、収率45%で得た。ステップ4の合成スキームを下記(a−4)に示す。

前記第3の発光層は、第3のキャリア輸送性化合物を含み、

前記第2の発光層の膜厚は、2nm以上20nm以下である発光素子。 - 請求項1乃至10のいずれか一項において、
前記第2の発光層が、前記第1の発光層及び前記第3の発光層と接する発光素子。 - 請求項1乃至11のいずれか一項に記載の発光素子を有する照明装置。
- 請求項1乃至11のいずれか一項に記載の発光素子と、前記発光素子を制御する手段を有する発光装置。
