Abstract
【解決手段】静電像が形成される電子写真感光体と、電子写真感光体上に形成された静電像に付着させるトナーを担持して搬送する現像剤担持体を備えた現像手段と、電子写真感光体上のトナーを転写材に転写させる転写手段と、転写材に転写されたトナーを転写材に定着させる定着手段と、を有する画像形成装置において、電子写真感光体上の最高濃度画像部におけるトナー載り量(M/S)L、電子写真感光体上の最高濃度画像部のトナーの平均帯電量(Q/M)L、並びに、転写材上でのトナー載り量に対する透過濃度Dtの傾きαと上記(Q/M)Lの逆数との積の範囲を規定する。

Description
図2に、現像、転写、定着の工程を経て、転写材としての紙の上に形成された階調画像における、透過濃度Dtと現像コントラスVcontとの関係を示す(図3も同様の図である)。図2中のラインaは、従来の一般的なトナーで得られるγ特性(階調特性)を示し、Vc=150Vで最高濃度(Dtmax=1.8)が得られるように調整されている(p点)。
図2及び図3のラインaで示すγ特性を有する場合と、図3のラインa’で示すγ特性を有する場合とで、同濃度の低濃度部(ハーフトーン部)におけるガサツキ度(画像の滑らかさ)を比較した。その結果、ラインa’で示すγ特性を有する場合の低濃度部(ハーフトーン部)のガサツキが非常に悪くなっていることが分かった。これは次のような理由によるものと考えられる。

カブリ、即ち、現像工程時に非画像部にトナーが付着してしまう現象については、次のことが分かった。即ち、トナー載り量の低減と同時にトナーの着色力も増加しているため、カブリの頻度は、従来と同等、又は悪化傾向となる。
前記電子写真感光体上の最高濃度画像部におけるトナー載り量を(M/S)L[mg/cm2]、前記電子写真感光体上の最高濃度画像部のトナーの平均帯電量を(Q/M)L[μC/g]、前記電子写真感光体上の最高濃度画像部のトナー層厚をLt[μm]、前記電子写真感光体の膜厚をLd[μm]、トナー層の比誘電率をεt、前記電子写真感光体の比誘電率をεd、真空の誘電率をε0、前記現像剤担持体に印加されるバイアスのDC成分の電位と前記電子写真感光体上の最高濃度画像部の電位との電位差の絶対値をVc[V]、とした時、下記の各式、

[画像形成装置の全体構成及び動作]
先ず、本発明の一実施例に係る画像形成装置の全体構成及び動作について説明する。図21は、本実施例の画像形成装置100の要部の概略断面構成を示す。

前述したように、従来よりも高い着色力のトナーを用いて、トナー載り量を低減しつつ、従来と同じ安定性を得るためには、少なくとも従来と同等のγ特性を持つことが望まれる。

で表される、トナー層によって形成される電位(以下「トナー層電位」という)ΔVtが、現像コントラストVcontをどれだけ埋めているかを示す指標を、充電効率と定義する。即ち、充電効率は、下記式、
充電効率=(ΔVt/Vc)×100
で表される。つまり、充電効率が100%の時、トナー層電位ΔVtが現像コントラストVcontを完全に埋めることを表す。

が成り立つ状態を保つことが重要である。

以下、図7を用いてトナー載り量を低減するために必要な諸特性の範囲を説明する。
先ず、(Q/M)Lの範囲について説明する。

次に、(M/S)Lの範囲について説明する。
0.56×2.5=1.4mg/cm2
0.37×2.5=0.93mg/cm2
により、約1mg/cm2程度まで低減することができる。このトナー層を定着した後のトナー層の高さは、図11に示すように、8μm程度となること分かった。更に、トナー層の高さが8μm程度となると、非画像部とのトナー段差に対する視覚感度が鈍くなり、トナー段差が目立たなくなることが分かった。

トナー層の比誘電率は、次のようにして測定したものである。
感光体の膜厚は、次のようにして測定したものである。
感光体の比誘電率、及び静電容量は、次のようにして測定したものである。
感光体上から転写材上へのトナーの転写効率をλとする。ここで、感光体上の最高濃度部の単位面積当たりのトナー重量をm1[mg/cm2]、その最高濃度画像が感光体から最終的転写材に転写された時の転写材上での単位面積当たりのトナー重量をm2[mg/cm2]とする。この時、転写効率λは、
λ=m2/m1
で表される。
本明細書では、トナーの粒径は、重量平均粒径で代表されるものとする。このトナーの重量平均粒径は、次のようにして測定したものである。

Claims (4)
- 静電像が形成される電子写真感光体と、前記電子写真感光体上に形成された静電像に付着させるトナーを担持して搬送する現像剤担持体を備えた現像手段と、前記電子写真感光体上のトナーを転写材に転写させる転写手段と、転写材に転写されたトナーを転写材に定着させる定着手段と、を有する画像形成装置において、
前記電子写真感光体上の最高濃度画像部におけるトナー載り量を(M/S)L[mg/cm2]、前記電子写真感光体上の最高濃度画像部のトナーの平均帯電量を(Q/M)L[μC/g]、前記電子写真感光体上の最高濃度画像部のトナー層厚をLt[μm]、前記電子写真感光体の膜厚をLd[μm]、トナー層の比誘電率をεt、前記電子写真感光体の比誘電率をεd、真空の誘電率をε0、前記現像剤担持体に印加されるバイアスのDC成分の電位と前記電子写真感光体上の最高濃度画像部の電位との電位差の絶対値をVc[V]、とした時、下記の各式、
0.22[mg/cm2]≦(M/S)L≦0.4[mg/cm2]
を満たし、
又、前記定着の後の転写材上の最高濃度画像部の透過濃度をDtmax、前記定着の後の転写材上のトナー載り量が0.1mg/cm2である画像部の透過濃度をDt0.1、前記電子写真感光体上から転写材上へのトナーの転写効率をλ、とした時、下記式、
- トナーの粒径が5.0μm以上であることを特徴とする請求項1に記載の画像形成装置。
- 前記電子写真感光体の静電容量Cは、下記式、
0.7×10-6[F/m2]<C<2.7×10-6[F/m2]
を満たすこと特徴とする請求項1又は2に記載の画像形成装置。 - 複数色のトナーを用いて画像形成を行なうことができ、各単色毎に前記各式の関係を満足することを特徴とする請求項1〜3いずれかの項に記載の画像形成装置。
