歯周疾患は、う蝕と並んで口腔領域における二大疾患の一つである。特に、歯槽膿漏は、今日のような高齢化社会においては深刻な問題となっている。従って、その予防・治療は口腔衛生上、非常に重要な意味を持っており、それらを目的とし、食塩を薬効剤として配合した練歯磨き剤が市販されている。この食塩による作用は炎症を起こした歯肉中の組織液を吸収することにより、歯肉局所における循環が改善される為と云われている。さらに、歯磨き組成物中に粒径が大きく溶解していない粒状食塩を配合することにより、塩辛さを低減すると共に、歯茎のマッサージ効果を付与することも報告されている(特許文献1参照)。しかし、効果を高める目的で食塩を高濃度配合するため、塩辛さが残り、子供等にはその使用を好まないものもいた。
