Abstract
【解決手段】垂直磁気記録用変換器は、分離した読み取りヘッドと書き込みヘッドを有する。書き込みヘッド26Aには、戻し極部片43から主極部片42に向かって延在し、空気ベアリング面ABSにおいて書き込みギャップを形成する尾端シールド44が備えられている。尾端シールドを2部品で構成した場合は、台座44Aと、ギャップで主極部片42に面する更に小さい先端44Bを備えている。読み取りヘッドと磁束ベアリング極部片の間の分離ギャップ内に非磁性で電気的に導電性の材料でできた熱シンク52が配設してある。この熱シンク52は好適には銅製であり、ABSまでは延在していない。

書き込み磁束ロスを最低にしながら所望の効果を達成するには、ABSからヘッドにいたる尾端シールドの厚さを主極部片たる強磁性部片42のトラック幅の半分にほぼ等しくすべきである。空中密度を高くするためにトラック幅をあまり小さくすると、尾端シールドの作成は一層困難になる。特に、最終的な尾端シールドの厚さは、ABSの行又は単一スライダ・ラッピングにより決まる。ラッピング・プロセスは、ヘッドの読み取り装置部分上での電気的ラッピング・ガイド(ELG)及び/又はストライプ高さを使用して終了する。このため、設計点でナノメータ・スケール単位の寸法が必要になると、シールドの湾曲や損傷をもたらすことがある。この問題に対する1つの解決策として、尾端シールドの2段階構成がある。1つの連続する尾端シールドではなく“切り欠いた”尾端シールドは、台座(本体)と先端という2つの構成要素に分解される。尾端シールドの先端作成は依然厳しいが、尾端シールド台座(本体)の要件は緩やかである。この2段階構成はラッピング中に構造を一層強固にし、リソグラフィー工程を緩やかにし、尾端シールド台座を曲げて戻し極へ戻すことができる。

Claims (21)
- 軟質下地層を備えた磁気媒体を使用して垂直記録を行なう薄膜磁気記録ヘッドであって、
磁束ベアリング極部片と、該磁束ベアリング極部片に固定されて空気ベアリング面まで延在する主極部片と、空気ベアリング面まで延在する戻し極部片とを含むヨークと、
前記主極部片と前記戻し極部片の間で前記ヨークを貫通するコイルと、
前記主極部片と前記戻し極部片の間の前記コイルの厚さ未満になっている前記空気ベアリング面に沿った長さの書き込みギャップを形成すべく前記主極部片に面する、前記戻し極部片に接続され、前記空気ベアリング面に沿って前記主極部片に向かって延在する尾端シールドと、
第1シールドと第2シールドを備え、該第2シールドが分離ギャップにより前記磁束ベアリング極部片から分離され、前記主極部片と前記第2シールドの間の前記分離ギャップが結果的に前記第2シールドと前記軟質下地層の間の所定遊びより実質的に大きい前記主極部片と前記第2シールドの間の遊びになるよう選択される読み取りヘッドと、
を有することを特徴とする薄膜磁気記録ヘッド。 - 前記主極部片と前記第2シールドの間の遊びが前記第2シールドと前記軟質下地層の間の所定遊びの約9倍以上であることを特徴とする請求項1記載の薄膜磁気記録ヘッド。
- 前記分離ギャップが、前記空気ベアリング面における前記第1シールドと第2シールドの幅と前記第1シールドと第2シールドの厚さの積で除算した後方ギャップにおける主極ヨークの幅の半分を掛けた主極ヨークの長さを掛けた所定空気ベアリング面から軟質下地層までの間隔の約9倍以上であることを特徴とする請求項1記載の薄膜磁気記録ヘッド。
- 非磁性で電気的に導電性の材料のシンクが前記分離ギャップ内に配設されていることを特徴とする請求項1記載の薄膜磁気記録ヘッド。
- 前記シンクが前記空気ベアリング面より凹んでいることを特徴とする請求項4記載の薄膜磁気記録ヘッド。
- 前記シンクがクロス・トラック方向における前記第2シールドの幅に略等しいクロス・トラック方向の幅を有することを特徴とする請求項4記載の薄膜磁気記録ヘッド。
- 前記シンクが銅製であることを特徴とする請求項4記載の薄膜磁気記録ヘッド。
- 前記シンクが、ヘッド内の構成要素からヘッドの表面上のパッドへ至る電気経路の一部であることを特徴とする請求項4記載の薄膜磁気記録ヘッド。
- 前記尾端シールドが、それが前記戻し極部片に固着する曲がったステッチ領域を有することを特徴とする請求項4記載の薄膜磁気記録ヘッド。
- 前記尾端シールドが、それが前記戻し極部片に固着する直線状ステッチ領域を有することを特徴とする請求項1記載の薄膜磁気記録ヘッド。
- 前記尾端シールドが台座部分と先端部分を有し、該先端部分が前記主極部片に面して前記書き込みギャップを形成することを特徴とする請求項1記載の薄膜磁気記録ヘッド。
- 垂直記録を行なう薄膜磁気記録ヘッドであって、
空気ベアリング面まで延在する主極部片と空気ベアリング面まで延在する戻し極部片とを含むヨークと、
前記主極部片と前記戻し極部片の間で前記ヨークを貫通するコイルと、
前記戻し極部片に接続され、前記空気ベアリング面に沿って前記主極部片に向かって延在する台座と、該台座に固着され前記主極部片に面して該主極部片と前記戻し極部片の間の前記コイルの厚さ未満である前記空気ベアリング面に沿った長さを有する書き込みギャップを形成し、前記空気ベアリング面に直角の前記台座の横断面積より小さい前記空気ベアリング面に直角の横断面積を有する先端を有する尾端シールドと、
を有することを特徴とする薄膜磁気記録ヘッド。 - 前記先端が前記主極部片のクロス・トラック幅と略等しいクロス・トラック幅を有することを特徴とする請求項12記載の薄膜磁気記録ヘッド。
- 前記先端が前記書き込みギャップの長さの4倍と略等しいABSと直交する高さを有することを特徴とする請求項12記載の薄膜磁気記録ヘッド。
- 前記台座が、それが前記戻し極部片に固着する箇所で湾曲であることを特徴とする請求項12記載の薄膜磁気記録ヘッド。
- 前記台座が、それが前記戻し極部片に固着する箇所で直線状であることを特徴とする請求項12記載の薄膜磁気記録ヘッド。
- 前記主極部片に固着される磁束ベアリング極部片と、
第2シールドが分離ギャップにより前記磁束ベアリング極部片から分離された状態で第1シールドと第2シールドを有する読み取りヘッドと、
前記分離ギャップ内に配設され、非磁性で電気的に導電性の材料のシンクと、を有することを特徴とする請求項12記載の薄膜磁気記録ヘッド。 - 前記シンクが、ヘッド内の構成要素からヘッドの表面上のパッドへ至る電気経路の一部であることを特徴とする請求項17記載の薄膜磁気記録ヘッド。
- 前記シンクが前記空気ベアリング面より凹んでいることを特徴とする請求項17記載の薄膜磁気記録ヘッド。
- 前記シンクが銅製であることを特徴とする請求項17記載の薄膜磁気記録ヘッド。
- 垂直記録を行なう薄膜磁気記録ヘッドであって、
磁束ベアリング極部片と、該磁束ベアリング極部片に固定されて空気ベアリング面まで延在する主極部片と、空気ベアリング面まで延在する戻し極部片とを含むヨークと、
前記主極部片と前記戻し極部片の間で前記ヨークを貫通するコイルと、
前記戻し極部片に接続され、前記空気ベアリング面に沿って前記主極部片に向かって延在する台座と、該台座に固着され前記主極部片に面して該主極部片と前記戻し極部片の間の前記コイルの厚さ未満である前記空気ベアリング面に沿った長さを有する書き込みギャップを形成し、前記空気ベアリング面に直角の前記台座の横断面積より小さい前記空気ベアリング面に直角の横断面積を有し、前記空気ベアリング面における前記主極部片のクロス・トラック幅と略等しいクロス・トラック幅を有する先端を有する尾端シールドと、
第2シールドが前記分離ギャップにより前記磁束ベアリング極部片から分離された状態で第1シールドと第2シールドを有する読み取りヘッドと、
前記分離ギャップ内に配設され、非磁性で電気的に導電性の材料のシンクと、
を有することを特徴とする薄膜磁気記録ヘッド。
