Abstract

Substrates are printed or coated with radiation-curable (esp. UV curing) materials and hardened by exposure to radiation (UV) with the introduction of steam between the radiation source and coated substrate. The process is esp. useful for applying coatings to sensitive substrates such as paper, thermoplastics, cotton wool, silk or rubber. The steam prevents O2 inhibition of the curing process, and allows the passage of the (UV) radiation whilst absorbing any infra red radiation emitted from the radiation source. This prevents undesired effects such as shrinkage and scorching of sensitive substrates. Steam is cheaper and more easily available for large scale operation (e.g. in a paper mill) than the inert gases previously used.
