Abstract
741,051. Printing processes. GAUNT, T. N., and WATSON, N. V. July 16, 1953 [July 11, 1952], No. 17537/52. Class 100 (2). In the production of relief prints by applying powdered resin to a freshly printed surface, the powder retained by the sticky ink is agglomerated and bonded to the ink by treatment with a setting medium, whereby heating to fuse the powder and which might damage the paper &c. base is unnecessary. The setting medium may contain ethyl cellulose, nitro cellulose, vinyl resin, alkyd resin, or a modified alkyd resin, in xylene, white spirit, butyl acetate, carbon tetrachloride or methyl ethyl ketone, with any necessary plasticizer; an example comprises an 87: 13 vinyl chloride vinyl acetate copolymer 15 parts by weight, dinonyl phthalate 3 parts, methyl ethyl ketone 110 parts. An ink containing a urea-modified alkyd resin, " Monastral " (Registered Trade Mark) green, primrose chrome and cobalt linoleate may be printed on to a banknote paper, finely-divided calcium resinate (or coumarone indene resin, shellac, alkyd resin, maleic resin, vinyl resin, ethyl cellulose or cellulose acetate) then being applied on a bronzing machine and burnished into the ink by reciprocating bands which also remove excess powder from the unprinted areas; excess may also be removed by blowing or suction; the setting medium is then applied by rollers, e.g. in a varnishing machine, and the sheets are dried on a conveyer by infra-red radiation.
