Abstract

The power train for a marine vessel is fitted with a number of power units mounted in parallel. Each of the units has an electrical generator to produce alternating current. The train is also fitted with diesel engines to produce a high torque at low revolutions with minimum specific fuel requirements. The train is fitted with a number of silicon rectifiers to produce a variable direct current for shunt wound motors for variable speed. Two of the direct current drives are coupled to the propellers through a speed reducing gear box, while the remainder are used for driving auxiliary gears.
