Abstract

The system for butt welding plates, thicker than 20 mm, of aluminium or aluminium alloy gives a high quality weld with sound fusion. A narrow gap is left between the plates (1, 2) and the weld is made using the metal inert gas process for the first run (4) and the tungsten inert gas process for further runs (5). The cycle is repeated several times. Weld protection consists of an inert gas with at least 50% helium, applied both sides. Direct current of more than 300A is required with an arc length of from 0.5 to 5 mm. The filler material size varies according to plate and electrode dimensions.
