Abstract

prepn. of pitch contg. >75% optically anisotropic (neomeso) phase comprises (A) extn. of isotropic pitch with an organic solvent system to leave a fraction with sintering pt. below 350 degrees C (as determined by DTA in absence of oxygen), and (B) heating the insoluble fraction at 230-400 degrees C. Suitable solvents have solubility parameter at 25 degrees C of 8-9.5 (8.7-9), e.g. benzene, toluene and toluene/heptane mixts. Used for mfr. of carbon electrodes, and esp. carbon and graphite fibres. The neo-meso phase material can be heated at 400 degrees C without significant coking and with 5% wt. loss, allowing it to be spun into fibres for subsequent oxidn. at 200-350 degrees C in air, and carbonisation at 800-2800 degrees (1000-2000) degrees C. Carbon or graphite fibres with high strength and modulus are obtd. without the difficult and expensive high-temp. stretching process. [IT1110284B]
