Abstract

1459297 Milk replacer compositions BRITISH PETROLEUM CO Ltd 22 Feb 1974 [2 March 1973] 8224/74 Heading A2B Milk replacer compositions for young animals, are made by adding powdered microbial proteinaceous material to a molten fat, so that the fat is absorbed into the proteinaceous material and mixed with one or more milk replacer components e.g. lactpserum, dextrins, starches, glucosides. The weight ratio of proteinaceous material to fat is between 1:4 and 4:1. The fat may have a m.p.t. below 100‹C and the protein is added to it at a temp. between the m.p.t. and 100‹C. The fat may be lard, tallow or copra. The powdered proteinaceous material may be derived from yeast in the form of a hydrolysate, concentrate or isolate. The yeast may be grown in aerated submerged fermentation in an aqueous nutrient using a hydrocarbon as carbon source, and may be Candida tropicalis or Candida lipolytica. The proteinaceous material may be lipophilic and may be pretreated with an organic solvent. Mineral and vitamin supplements and/or skim milk powder may also be included. This may be done either by forming an aqueous emulsion of the refatted protein in a solution of the other ingredients, using a sucroglyceride, monostearate, lecithin or a polysaccharide as emulsifying agent, and then drying, or by injecting atomised droplets of the molten protein product into a dispersion in air of the other ingredients, the average size of the droplets and particles being below 100 microns.
